Thargomindah is a tiny town on the Bulloo River in southwest Queensland. It’s approximately 1,100 kilometres west of Brisbane. At the 2021 Australian census, its population was 243. It’s the main town and administrative centre of the Bulloo Shire, in area the third largest of Queensland’s local government municipalities.
Together with my husband, I’ve visited Thargomindah twice, first in October 2019, then again in October 2022. On the first occasion, we experienced a dust storm followed by rain; on the second occasion, we experienced two thunderstorms, heavy rain and flash flooding.
Despite the vicissitudes of the weather, we took time on both occasions to explore the tiny town, visiting its major historical sites and learning about the people and history of the town and district.
In 2022, after our stopover at Thargomindah, we travelled west to Noccundra, where we visited the heritage listed Noccundra Hotel (1882). Last of all, we drove to the historic Burke and Wills Dig Tree site, before leaving the Bulloo Shire and Queensland and arriving at Innamincka (South Australia).

I spent many years working in the Oil Fields around Moomba to Eromanga driving back and forth from bases in either Brisbane, Toowoomba and Roma, and doing some upgrades to the Hospitals in all the remote towns from Morvan to Thargomindah. I loved the little towns, like Thargo, Toompine, Quilpy, Eromanga, Noccundra, Nocatunga, etc, even if the town is just the Pub, and managed to stop in most of them overnight. It was nice to see some of the changes in Thargo and reminisced the fond memories of my stays there. Thank you.

I travelled all through that area in the 60s and 70s every 2 months and it sure didn't look like that. Great to see the old country towns revamped and brought back to life. Some of the greatest people i've ever met came off stations in that area. Nice to relive old memories thanks.

A great area of Australia. I go to these places pig hunting on a regular basis. Small towns need to be accepted as great tourist and visiting centres. Love Australia, would not live anywhere else.

The tour guide Tony did a fantastic job there! The rainbow was so beautiful after the storm and reflection of the trees on water was crystal clear! The town looks in good order and very Solar-focused! 😊

Thank you for this lovely piece, beautifully produced. Makes me sad though - we did a family trip a few years ago, stopping in Thargomindah with my beautiful parents who were big Outback travellers over many years. We passed through on our way to camp at Kilkowera Station, between Thargo and Hungerford (beautiful place to camp btw). A few weeks ago we lost dad, who loved this little town and had been there many times - he would have loved to watch this. We all miss him so much. Cherish your time together as you travel... Warm regards and thanks, David

I was a 14 year old kid in the sixties and hitched rides all around that area starting at Windsor in NSW. Up through Bourke, the Cunnamulla and some how ended up Thargomindah and eromanga before getting to Quilpie where stranded by floods. I am pretty certain the roads between Thargomindah and Eromanga were fine red dust. I can’t remember how I got home but I think it was via Warwick and down the New England before branching off down the Putty Road. I’m going back through there again in 2024 or 2025 before everything gives up and they put me in a box.

The jail museum reminds me of the fascinating collection of similar buildings up in Croydon, which of course also has the beautiful pub and the Gulflander. Happy travels. I'll be putting Thargomindah on our next Queensland adventure. Cheers.

I have been to Thargomindah many times in my working life, it is the furthest town from the sea in Australia, it has or had its own small oil refinery when I was travelling there, I know it is many years ago now but the publicans name was Johnny Walker back then, I have had many beers in the local pub there, I am a bit too old to go back there now though, happy travels and enjoy you trip to the Noccundra hotel, it is a real Outback pub!!!!!!!!

We plan on stopping there for a night in September this year, either at the motel or caravan park. We stayed a night back in 2015, had time for a bit of a look around, hopefully arrive a bit earlier this time. We'll be on our way from the Central Coast to Mount Isa via Innamincka then over to Cairns.

I travelled there from Tibooburra, I regret not going to Hungerford. I just remembered, in the town around 1980s, the signs pointing to other places were diecast pointing fingers. When I returned years later they were gone.
