Surely, this is one of the greatest of Gospel hymns made even more powerful when sung to the tune Bryn Calfaria. Great singing ! A pity the choir does not sing the original words. Why change the words, they are no better than Hart's. Furthermore, verse 5 of Hart's original has been left out. The hymn wonderfully as a whole is a decription of the totality of divine grace in the Person and Work of the Saviour

Hart’s original had several more stanzas. It was altered by August Toplady and others. The tune Bryn Calfaria came a century later and the original words don’t fit the meter. True to his desire to express his personal experience in his hymns, Hart declared himself in the first verse not as ‘needy’ but as ‘wretched’; until middle age he rejected his Christian upbringing, professed himself an atheist and lived an immoral and unhappy life. A true trophy of grace, this powerful testimony/invitation hymn emerged from the man God changed. The last verse in this version isn’t Hart’s and I think detracts a little.
