She has crossed the comedian line. She doesn’t represent the whole of Singapore. She should be the one doing the apology, not the Singapore government. What a big shot, need Singapore to apologize to Malaysia on her behalf?? How convenient for her being American, so she can get away with it and pretend it’s none of her business? She's no longer a Singaporean. It's weird that she used the pronoun 'we' when referring to Singapore. To me, her stand-up was more of a hate speech than comedy. She hated Malaysia so much that I began to suspect that her ex must be a Malaysian and they had had a terrible breakup that had traumatised her ever since. Using Malaysia-Singapore breakup reminiscent to hers to vent her anger on anything Malaysian, and she thinks about breakup revenge all the time. She probably cried too, like LKY did albeit for a different reason, on her breakup day.

@@myrchantkobold8268 When people make jokes skillfully about Hiroshima, it's done in a way that addresses the absurdity that the event ever occurred. It's usually poking fun at the West who thought dropping it on civilians was ok at the time. But you can still counterbalance it with "Look at the atrocities Japan did in WW2". Here with this comedian, it's just saying "fuck you, we're rich, you're poor, I hate you." There's no witty reasoning behind it. There's no joke being told. And it's all done from a snobby pretext, that doesn't make sense anyway. She didn't contribute much to Singapore's development, so why is she adopting and pushing a "We vs them" mentality? It's just poor execution. Then she brings up MH370, when it's just a tragic event where there isn't much comic value to be extracted anyway. It's like making fun of people who die in earthquakes. Where is the absurdity in the comedy? See the joke is the absurdity that she thought she was being funny by saying all this.

LKY did cry when he announced Tunku expelled Singapore. May I enlighten on this issue. On 8th of Aug,1965, London received intelligence report that the Malaysian Parliament will convene on the following day to exepl Singapore. Then British High Commisioner went to see Tunku and offered to arrest LKY if that would help in retaining Singapore within Malaysia. Tunku rejected the offer. He even did not inform the Conference of Rulers as convention dictates it. After the Parliamentary session and Singapore expelled,Tunku sought an audience with the King and informed that he had expelled Singapore. The King was dumbfounded. He scolded Tunku for not allowing the Conference of Rulers to deliberate on this matter. UMNO members were caught of guard. Even my father cried. You HAVE to test your material before handing it out, and if the LIVE crowd wasn't receptive, you should definitely think twice before posting it online. There are jokes like the ones you mentioned all the time in the West, and they are poorly received and in bad taste also. Based on your example, I would answer the same way. I would turn them off, because I would consider them rude and against my personal views. Be that as it may, I do not agree with restricting people's rights to say things, even when dumb and hurtful. Civility and limits are subjective Zahimi, it changes with time and circumstances. A fundamental right is not. Speech can be restricted in limited circumstances, as I mentioned earlier, but it should not be done simply because its offends or people's feelings are hurt. I am sure Najib and Rosmah felt offended, insulted, and very uncomfortable when free press and speech started speaking out on 1MBD. I hope more people would understand the difference between subjective feelings and objective rights.

Nahh..Americans made fun of 9/11 so often it's common in Hollywood. Try to make jokes about what happened in North Korea, all the atrocities happening between Israel and Palestine, the conflict in Middle East, or the Tsunami that killed thousands of people in Japan back in 2011. I bet they wouldn't even dare. Freedom of speech is not freedom without consequences. If you want to be a comedian, you have to be very careful and skillful with how you present the topics to the audience. Everything has its boundaries. Something to be noted about 9/11 jokes as a comparison: when American comedians like Pete Davidson joke about the tragedy, they make fun of the circumstances surrounding it rather than the tragedy itself. More "oh well my dad died during 9/11 but at least I get to keep his cool uniform", Less "haha plane hit building and people die". That is real btw, Pete Davidson's late father was a firefighter on duty who died during the incident, and he did a segment about it on his SMD show 5 years ago.

Singapore government is both magnanimous and strategic in their apology. They didn't have to because logical people would blame the individual, not her country. But then we have UMNO youth, still stuck in the past ways of doing useless things. If the SG government didn't apologize, they would have been marching down to the SG embassy. I realise the separation is taught quite differently between the two countries… In Malaysia, it’s taught that both countries wanted the separation, while in Singapore, it’s taught that Singapore didn’t want it, but had no choice due to the rising tensions between the two governments and the race riots that occurred in those two years. Most notably though, I remember getting told as a child that LKY cried after the separation because he didn’t want it, and he was crying because he feared for Singapore’s future… but if you actually watched his speech, you will realise that it was more of regret and guilt. Until that point, the guy had been pretty confident in his choices, and he was convinced that the merger was the way to go for Singapore’s future, only to be proven terribly wrong in just two years.

If she has simply taken a step back and apologized for the sake of goodwill after realizing how her jokes had hurt a large group of people it wouldn't have blown so way out of proportion. I mean it's just common human decency to apologize after causing hurt regardless it was intentional or otherwise, in jest or in earnest. Her damage control had been poor, and it just showed that she didn't care whether she had caused hurt to people. By her responses afterward, it just seems like she doesn't feel that she is accountable for whatever fallout that follows her controversial statement and this is the kind of value that is being increasingly perpetuated by Western society today in the name of freedom of speech and expression. You know, that "I can say whatever h*ll I want so f u" kind of value. Her responses and actions to the issue just show that she can dish, but can't take. Telling people that they can't take jokes is just saying that it's not okay for others to express themselves to her. Only she can do it and not take responsibility. You were so right in saying that who are we to tell others how to process their grief. I appreciate a good roasting banter when it's done in good faith. Nigel Ng a.k.a Uncle Roger does this all the time and people love it. His jokes are often "dangerous" and deeply rooted in poking fun at different cultures but he has done it in a way that enables the recipient of the jokes to laugh at themselves. With Jocelyn, it was not so much the content of her jokes that was offensive but the way Jocelyn delivered it. It was laced with spite, bitterness, and a real, palpable intention to hurt. And to me, that was the most unacceptable part of her comedy that night.

I enjoyed living in Singapore and visiting Malaysia. I strongly believe that many Singaporean and Malaysia benefits each other, whether it is the source of food supplies or job. So why the hell people found the need to say Singapore better or Malaysia better? Can't we both be great? I think we are both awesome! Looks at how many Singaporean and Malaysian goes in and out of each other's country.
