I used to do standup myself, and I can say you are really good! By the way, 40 years ago in college, my friend tried to explain ma ma ma ma and I could never hear the difference! Apparently my mother is a horse.
@nicoleraheem11952 жыл бұрын
😂 So, the rising tone Má, in pinyin. I think of the line that shows the tone, as grass growing out of the ground for HEMP. It sounds like a ❓ "Do you have má?" Mā Is like a American kid calling for his mom to get her attention. "Mom! Ma! Mama!" So, it's a higher whiney pitch for me. Mǎ I think of a person sitting on a saddle. Since there is curve on the back of a horse, this Mǎ, reminds me that there's a fall and a rise in the tone. And mà, for the 4th tone, is like when you dropped your food that you've been craving all day, because a fucker didn't stop at a red light and you exclaim: "DAMN!" WITH FORCE. So 👇 goes the tone with force I'm a student of the Chinese language and this is what helped me to remember MA.

Great set from Dawn and her wedding speech is a classic. When the Chinese tennis star Li Na won the Australian Open major tennis title in 2014 she delivered an unexpectedly funny acceptance speech. It's worth checking out. She provided her husband with some "feedback" in the same manner as Dawn. What's with the "Ireland is small" vibe? On one of her first visits to Ireland my Canadian sister-in-law commented "Gee....your country is so small it could fit into one of our lakes".

You can count to 12 on one hand if you touch your thumb to your phalanges (the separate bones in your fingers). And if you increase the count on your other hand by 1 after every 12 on your first hand... you can count to 12*13=156 with two hands. And to translate it back to a number, you multiply the count on your second by 13 and add the count on your first hand. So 3 on the left hand and 6 on the right hand is (6*13=78) + 3 = 81. It's a simpler system than making arbitrary shapes with your hand for numbers higher than 5 so it's easier to learn and use.

That counting part was relatable, when I was in China, I absolutely loved this concept of counting in one hand. 😅 PS : For me too all the 4 tones sounded the same. 😂😂😂

I could discern the different tones (probably because I’m a musician) but I bet I’d have a *much* harder time if I was trying to learn Chinese and the tones were coming at me in a larger mix than just the same syllable repeated 4 times.
@Gossypol2 жыл бұрын
@@howlinhobbit Absolutely. When I was learning Chinese these 4 tones were so similar that I accepted my failure in the subject in a very early stage. 😅😂

I can totally understand the tone thing. I am Filipino and we have this sort of thing in our language too, the famous one being "Bababa ba?" which means "Is there anyone alighting the vehicle?"

Cantonese has 9 tones. It does driving me gone crazy even more because just a tiny slight slip of pronunciation, meaning goes off like a Milky Way galaxy ROFL

I am a first and a half generation Australian Chinese and my daughter was born in Australia. We only speak Mandarin and Cantonese at home and I teach her every bit of Chinese culture I inherited from my parents and grandparents! You are so funny, keep up the good work!

this is easily 1 of the best stand up routines I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. holy crap, I laughed through all of it. thanks for the subtitles, I would have missed some of it. If Dawn Wong ever does a US tour, I'm doing whatever I can to be there!

I've been reading a lot of novels from Chinese Authors lately and it's open me up to the culture. I was looking up cross talk because I've never heard of it and stumbled across this video. I am so glad I gave it a look. Girl you had me rolling in laughter the whole time. I made sure to subscribe on both channels. ❤ 🇺🇸

Since I did have lot's of Chinese friends and student mates, a little bit, I undersand their thinking style. Kind, tradition honoring, good people. I wish you a strong move ahed to you, in your humor career. Your not there yet, but you got the right idea. You will do fine. Take care.

as a foreigner (UK) that has learned/studied Chinese for 5 years, lived in China for 2 and graduated with a first-class in a Chinese based course, I can with CONFIDENCE say that my tones are still dogshit and I accept that xD. The part about the Chinese people saying that a foreigner Chinese is good even when it's one sentence and all over the place, spot on. 你太搞笑了,dawn加油。

I thought this was excellent thank you. I had a really good Chinese friend who wanted to teach me Chinese and his first lesson was the difference in tones between Cantonese and Mandarin so I howled when you did that because they were all the same to me.
