Agreed. More people share the same thoughts than these closet racists that were freed when they heard Trump speaking the same language as them. Trump's popularity will fade out as soon as he doesn't win this election, so too will all the attention of his cult followers. I thought it was interesting when he noted that our mindsets change from what we watch as informative. Let's cultivate a new mindset that helps every American be the best version of themselves. I know I do! Sorry, you still have to experience racism in 2024, Greg. Hopefully, one day, we'll live in a society that practices equity and equality for all the people as the amendment to the Bill of Rights intended.

The Republicans purposefully kept racism alive after the Civil Rights Act via "The Southern Strategy". Over the past half-century they identified it, nurtured it, grew it, and empowered it. In the immortal words of Lyndon Johnson, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." It is known that the commonality among Trump voters across wealth and education is their racism.

"I think it wiser, moreover, not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.” - Robert E. No one should own another person. The KKK was the worst thing in the whole salvery issue. Nothing can explain lynching. Ever. Completely lawless. They should have all been jailed. Why did the southern police do nothing about the slsughter? Possibly because they were part of the organization themselves.

The last time i spoke with my brother was shortly after the overturning of Roe. In sharing my sadness with him, he called me immoral as well as other vile insults. He piled on the conspiracy theories involving eugenics and other abhorrent racist comments. Mind you, this was nothing new from him as well of his mistreatment of me, but this was the final straw. He now wonders why I refuse to speak with him. I'm sure that my story is common in today's political climate, which is quite sad.

My father was a lifelong racist and religious fanatic. He never forgave when when I stopped going to church at 16, and I thought it was hilarious once when I was at his house for a visit, and he and his wife would talk about his neighborhood (which was overwhelmingly white) and they would whisper that a nearby neighbour was "italian". We were in the house even though there was a screen door, I asked them why were they whispering? We never did get along better because of his archaic beliefs.

I know that struggle well. I spent years trying to convince my homophobic brother why he needs to treat me with respect, even telling him I feel suicidal based on it. He doesn't care, and for my own safety I had to stop talking to him. We have no contact anymore for about 6 years, and then my mom passed away. Even then, he isn't interested in listening. I'm done. I can't take that pain anymore. I cut off all my relatives for the same reason. Their words just cut me down and I can't take it. I tried, I really did to reach them and I learned very quickly that if peoples' minds are made up it is near impossible for them to see any reason. If there is a hint of compassion and understanding, you may have an inroads. In those situations, if you feel compelled to speak truth and love please do so. But if you try and try and you are just worn down or in my case it is a threat to your life, for your own safety and happiness know that you are not obligated to spill your guts and spend your life trying to reach these people out of obligation. I remember when I first came out at 31 back in 2016 I was in a support group for other LGBT Christians, who felt that their faith and their sexuality was in conflict. The group was not some shitty conversion camp, it was a genuine place to work this out. When this issue with my brother and my relatives was starting in 2016 I remember a guy about 15 years older than me who said that he had tried for 20 years to be polite and kind and not confront his bigoted conservative family and he hoped being around them, being a positive example of how gay people are "normal" and that he wasn't any different than he was before he came out would soften their stance. When he did confront them, they hadn't shifted an inch because they had absolutely no reason to. They could keep thinking about him as garbage and he didn't challenge it. So he told me "do not let them put you back in the closet again" after telling this story and I never forgot it. Educate if you can (especially POC and queer allies!) but never surrender your dignity or safety for it, never. Sorry if this is long winded but this discussion is intensely personal and I know the pain Rick is describing so very well.

The Confederate flag is not a symbol of your heritage, it only existed for like 5 years. By that logic, the high school I went to is part of my family's heritage, or is 4 years below the cutoff? It's mind boggling.

Many of the same people who are fine with flying the Confederate flag are also horrified to see it when somebody flies the flag of Mexico within the US. But if it's part of the heritage of Hispanic Americans with Mexican ancestry, just as the Confederate flag is claimed to be representative of heritage, then it's okay to fly it to celebrate Mexican heritage, even though it isn't a US flag, right?

I'm old enough to remember colored only signs, public schools in NY were a bag of skittles, all colors and all flavors. we were kids and didn't know we were supposed to hate each other until the "adults" taught us to hate. if not for them imagine America?

I cannot understand the power of Trump. One of my best friends is close to divorce because of Trump. His dad gave him control of the two family farms when he was 18, with a generous deal to buy them. He went on to build a successful produce distribution company, then a landscaping company, and expanded his farming, but he always held the idea that he was blessed to have had this inheritance, and it was his duty to do everything he could to provide good lives for his workers (almost all immigrants) and he did. Many of them own their own farms, sometimes more than one, because he helped them, and now they are suppliers for his produce business. But his wife has gone full MAGA. She is virulently anti-immigrant now - never was before. She complains that she and Steve could be so much richer if he had not "wasted" their money on "those people". And she's right! They are rich, but they COULD have been a lot richer if they had treated their workers like dirt. Trump took this woman whom I was good friends with for over 40 years and somehow made her a toxic person,

“My heritage” line is a lot of bullshit. The Confederacy lasted four years and there was considerable division for at least two of those years. The people suffered terribly. Enormous death toll, starvation,POW’s, an economy that completely crashed, that was The Confederacy. As the country expanded west, free white men did not want to compete with slaves; they’d pretty much be slaves too. Thus the war. To claim this four year tragic mistake is “my heritage” is to proudly proclaim, “I am proud to be ignorant.” Our Southern region has much to be proud about from Jamestown to founding fathers to rock-n-roll and plenty more but The Confederacy was a mistake; everybody makes em. Own it and move on.

A nation built on stealing native lands and building plantations with slaves, will not quickly pivot to supporting the idea that "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL." We're 250 years in... and MLK was killed by the U.S. Gov't. while Trump walks free.
