Comedians have been retelling other people’s jokes since it all started. Books of jokes could be freely bought and well-known jokes got retold all the time with a fresh spin given to them in performance. Audiences often knew exactly what was coming before the punchline - it was as much in the delivery as in the execution. Certain well-worn jokes even became famous - who hasn’t heard ‘The Aristocrats’ for example? This is nothing shocking, scandalous or new.
