I feel so bad for Ben when Leslie says that no one wants him there. He's new there, just doing his job, doesn't know anyone or have any friends yet and is introverted and nerdy, but still mustered up the courage to go to the party so that he could talk things through with Leslie and maybe find a mutual understanding, but he just gets bashed, bullied and sent home

He’s a fan of the books. It’s totally in character for him to not like Jackson’s fan fiction movies. Same how in real life, book fans dislike when movie/shows change the story from Tolkien’s. Sir Christopher Lee, who might've been the biggest LOTR fan to ever live and was even good friends with Tolkien back in the day, absolutely loved working on the movies. And I think that means a lot.
