Facts he put alot of up and coming black actors/actresses on the scene but Spike isn't talking just about roles in a movie. He focused more on positions of power i.e. directing/writing. Unfortunately we will never truly know how much leverage someone really has over the hollywood power structure. I feel where both of these men are coming from. Spike wants us to use our power when we get it to uplift our black culture and give some opportunities. Eddie is saying I’m doing that but in the background because if I do what you’re doing then a shutdown is easier to happen because they see it coming. Black Wall Street is a prime example of that. If they see us in the rear view, they’re going to block the passing lanes. To be honest, they both need each other in the fight with their respective view points. Spike runs defense/distraction while Eddie runs offense/scoring for this thing to work.

There have been many black actors and comedians that mention Eddie Murphy giving them a foot in the door. He got Damon Wayans a bit part in Beverly Hills Cop, Chris Rock mentioned that he got his first real role in Beverly Hills Cop II after Eddie saw him in a comedy club and also said that Eddie was the reason why the manager put him on stage in that club, Dave Chapelle said that he got his first big role in The Nutty Professor and Keanon Ivory Wayans said that Eddie opened doors for him in Hollywood. He may be low key about it but Eddie looked out for his own.

I think that both camps should be making an effort to understand each other's positions. Instead of throwing shade at each . They can do it...Tyler Perry built his empire making movies for black women. His target audience made him rich. Stallone did it with the Expendables franchise. He contacted all his co-stars DIRECTLY. It won't work if all of them demand to be paid 20 million for the movie though. Chris Tucker will have to take a pay cut lol. Probably all would have to take a percentage off the back end profits, have no ego, (if coordination's an issue...they gotta treat it like a funeral (who misses those?) film in Canada (Where it's cheaper) and do a comedy. (Comedies are cost a lot less budget-wise, easier to make and easy to make a large profit off of. Just look at all Marlon Wayans movies, Ice Cube films etc.) This isn't to say they can't make a high-budget, high-grossing film...but if people are afraid of losing their ish...then minimized risks are the way to go. Actually...they should all pool their money/talent to do a Boondock's movie. They'd all be voice acting so no need to worry about the social distancing. DONE and DONE. Or just make another Blade movie/Coming to America (think they are making a sequel) with all black cast lol. Story time: I'm a 40ish year old white female. When I was 15 - 19, I used to drive my mother from Memphis to Oklahoma and back again every year to visit my sister. Now as women, you travel different. You look for danger at the gas station you stop at, you don't stop at rest stops EVER, and you're very aware of your surroundings. This was drilled into me from a very young age. So one summer, I'm driving my mom to Oklahoma again, and we were in Arkansas. I get off the interstate at a gas station. It's broad daylight, middle of the afternoon, and the area has 2 gas stations, food places, little shops, etc. It's a busy intersection. I pull up, and I'm scanning the area carefully. No one is standing around. Everyone is going from their car at the pump to the inside, or leaving and heading to their car from the store. No one's standing around, no one is looking at us, and the people look like working class people - paint on their hands or construction workers, dry wall, what ever, blue collar types. I grew up in Memphis, and these are country folks. I feel it's safe. We're parked right by the door. Again, BROAD DAYLIGHT. I reach for the ignition, and my mother, who's holding her little purse says "no we can't stop here". Now I know my mother. Once I became a teenager, racism was a frequent argument in my home. I knew why we 'couldn't stop here'. This was a predominantly black neighborhood. Ok, I get it - in Memphis, there WERE dangerous parts of town with lots of crime, and yes, in some predominantly black areas (red lining anyone?). I had a bottle thrown at my window in one of these areas. I get it. But this wasn't that. These people were driving work trucks - both with and without company logos. Some were in small cars, probably just getting off work. I very snarkily said to my mother "miss Daisy, I think we'll be ok" (driving miss Daisy was a movie around then, and I used it frequently to shame her about her racism). She pulls her purse all the way up to her chin, and in a higher, very panicked voice says "I'm not joking, don't you dare turn this car off a please, we can't -". I didn't really get it then. I knew it didn't make sense, but I don't think I've ever seen my mother so afraid, before or since. I've learned a lot since that day that has really opened my eyes about her fear. She was taught that fear, by the news, by my grand parents, by her grand parents and other relatives and friends, and at school. It WAS the south after all. By experiencing more "secretive" racism (jokes only told at home with family, or with like minded friends), myself and my generation began to see something was shady. We had to learn out in the world that our parents were wrong. It took longer for some, but a lot of us learned. By the time my kids were born, I knew enough to know that I didn't want them to fear everyone, and I certainly didn't want them to hate anyone who didn't earn it. I still make mistakes, but if you're willing to be honest and talk openly and with EMPATHY, you'll figure it out and grow as a person. As the years went by, my mother learned not to fear people (not as much anyway), and even to be more empathetic. She actually watched movies like Mississippi Burning with me, and was horrified. But regardless of that, that fear will probably never leave her entirely. I was taught as a child that Malcolm X was a violent racist, and we learned about MLK, and you didn't bring up Malcolm X. I finally broke down and decided that I needed to educate myself on him, so that's what I've been working on. While I don't agree with his earlier messages, I understand them better. Based on what his lived experience was, how can I blame him for feeling this way? His father was murdered, his house was burned down as a child, then as an adult. If anyone reads this and hasn't researched him, I recommend it highly. We have to hear stories from the perspectives of people who've suffered, even if you feel uncomfortable. I feel like this is the only way we can grow as people, and we HAVE to stop worrying about how much pigment is in another's skin, and who they choose to love. Tribalism was helpful in the early stages of humans - it kept them alive - but damn is it a useless skill now! I've seen "I'm not apologizing for something I didn't do" so often it's nauseating. Listen. That's what everyone is asking. Learn. Be uncomfortable, I don't think that's asking too much. Look at things from someone else's view. It's not difficult, and you might find yourself growing as a person. JMO

In the French territories of Martinique and Guadeloupe (Caribbean) we call white folks "Zorey" in our ancestral language (built around west-african languages and erroneously labelled French-based creole) which literally means "ears"... That fear of being heard by the white folks has survived in all descendants of enslaved Africans in the Americas, in my opinion. The same goes for the way we fail to overtly unite when we could be doing great things for our communities. Those who dare get a target on their backs for their efforts. They get dragged through the mud in popular media (and now on social media too) so that their credibility crumbles fast. It's not just a U.S. thing, sadly.
