I used to work with an older lady who was permanently drunk. She came in at the same time as the rest of us but took hours to get her stuff out of her bag, tidy her desk, go to the loo, make tea, pop out to get a sandwich and then have a fifteen minute loo break. At every move she took wee nips from her hip flask, then made a faff of refilling it from a bottle she kept in her coat that was hanging on a peg in the middle of the room. I think she assumed we hadn't twigged what she was up to. Thing was, everyone loved her to bits as she was such a sweetheart and no-one ever moaned about her. That was nearly 45 years ago.

I got so stoned at work one lunchtime that all I could do is lie down on the bench next to my machine, utterly wankered. I was 16 and a 1st year engineering apprentice at Rolls Royce in 1980. But i wasn't pissed, you know.

My friend Hermione was a bit of a lush. She used to drink rather a lot but the group of acquaintances we hung with all loved her craic. She started a new job but only lasted till ten o'clock because she'd drank a1/2 bottle of vodka on the train on the way. She nlw works as an accountant in Gibralter.

many moons ago I was working for a UK telecom company,engineer outside,but I broke my ankle playing footy on Sunday so the nice company (yes they really was great) gave me a few weeks Opps going on the phone letting the engineers know where to go if they'd finished their jobs, in this office, there was a "middle-aged lady" who was always drinking from two different lemonade bottles that she had in the fridge with her name on , yeah so what, lemonade ..until this one summer day we all decided to have a lunchtime BBQ,we had a seating area outside and we had a nice lunch break nice BBQ we all brought salad and stuff, this lady offered a few of us a glass of her ice cold lemonade I was the only one to take up the offer ...THIS was not lemonade! this was at a gues 90 % vodka..I did not put her in trouble,I leaned over to her and said " I think you brought the wrong bottle out"

i've had two jobs in my working life, where i've worked at places where there is a person like this - a complete alcoholic. the sad thing is they think nobody knows and its so blatant, the first guy when he came in in the morning would be shaking so badly with the DTS and sweating he was useless, then would disappear and down whatever he needed to and come back relatively normal, then carry on, topping up every now and again - then lunchtime in the pub, back to work then straight in the pub at 5pm and get obliterated. Everyday, i used to think what a tragic and sad existence, this was in my first ever job in the early 90s. No way would he get away with that now, second time was about 15 years ago, the bloke would drink 3 pints every single lunchtime then would be useless in the afternoon - used to annoy the hell out of me as we had the same job and i was always fixing his mistakes. we got a new boss, a couple of weeks in i had a meeting with the new boss, he asked me what was up with him - i had had a particularly bad week fixing his mess so thought fk it, and just said oh he's drunk most of the day he always has 3 pints at lunchtime, he didn't look that surprised, 2 days later he was never seen again and we we were told he had left due to poor performance, we never saw him again - it was a much better job after that.

Man, I've been pissed at work a couple of times before, after unplanned mid-week benders. It was hell! But, I've never drank at work. My mates who worked in the City were hardcore, though. The drinking culture there has changed now, but even 10 years ago, there were plenty of boozy lunches going on. Couldn't get away with that where I worked!

It's not a "laugh track." It was filmed in front of an audience. It cuts off or goes silent because it's been edited. Shows aren't filmed in one take. You can tell "Canned laughter" because it was recorded in the 50s and never updated.

The running joke is that all of his family are perpetually drunk and denying it, including high schoolers.
