I remember playing Persona 5 a couple years ago when the pandemic hit on my PS3 and by that time my father was still with me, sadly he passed away a year ago and I really miss him but the Persona games were really a good comfort for me on the bad times when I wasn't able to socialize with many people then... I feel like playing Persona 5 Royale to see the new additions and enjoy that time again.

Firstly I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad Persona 5 gave you some solace/comfort in a rough time. I would really trh Royal to be honest since it's got loads of quality of life updates that help make the game fresh. Plus it's a walk down memory lane more than anything :)

I've said it elsewhere, I'll say it again: I always considered Hollow Knight to be my go-to comfort game, and I've done multiple playthroughs of it over the past handful of years, but I never truly understood why. It's a game with a notably harsh difficulty and world and isn't afraid to get a little mean-spirited every now and then... but something about the world, the characters, the music, and the perfectly lonely tone of the whole adventure... it draws me back in, even after I've seen everything that the game and its lore has to offer. I guess it comforted me in a very hard point of my life too, where I was bouncing back from some significant trauma, and I have to thank it for giving me some comfort in such an uncertain time. I even found multiple friends, some who've since moved on and some who've stuck with me to this day, through its community, and I cherish them a whole lot too. Maybe I'll revisit it some time soon - I still have that final Pantheon and a couple speedrun achievements to get, and I'd love to have one last run through the world where I take my time before that. But, it's probably gonna be a while.

As someone who only just got into Hollow Knight this last week, I understand. It's the fact that doing the harder parts like Grimm/NKG, Pantheons, & even just beating the game normally.. They are a warm blanket for me as of late. It's just a beautiful world to be a part of.

I’ve replayed Poképark 2 way too many times. I wouldn’t ever consider it objectively great, but it’s THE nostalgic game. It’s that comforting feeling. The writing and gameplay scratch such a specific, wholesome, calming itch that no other game can.

Only just found this video now, and it's really fantastic! Really resonated with me. I find myself going back to Witcher 3 and dark souls 3 at least once a year. The sense of familiarity and comfort I get from them is unmatched.

I don't think I have even been stressed per se from any daily activities including work, but often when i was in high school and college i would boot up my favorite rhythm game at the time (Stepmania and then OSU), and just smash out really hard high BPM maps (much to the chagrin of my parents since i was often told that my keyboard taps are loud), and i guess that would untangle my mind from taking notes all day. That said, i haven't played one in a few years now and i now just really relax and watch youtube, then for more long term passings i play longer dungeon crawlers and turn based rpgs that allow me to turn my brain off and just progress.

Do you reckon livestreaming can be considered "playing with friends?" Obviously, I am not saying every stranger out there is a friend, but could the stream experience come close to feeling like there are friends with you? This video is excellent food for thought!

Thank you! And I honestly would say so depending on if they are regulars in said stream or have been a longtime viewer of course. I think being in discord tourneys for games like Mario Kart 8 have been very fun cause I get to meet new people while playing a great game at the same time. So I think so :)

I don't even know where to begin with picking a comfort game. I have like 70, lol. the two that come to mind for me are probably Mega Man 6 and Klonoa 2. I don't really have a strong nostalgic connection to them or anything, but they both are just very "relaxing" for lack of a better term. They're games that I can just let loose and get lost in. There not too long, there not too hard (for me anyway), nor are they too overly complicated. They're just simplistic fun...and during some of those harsher times in life, sometimes that's all ya need. Great video, per usual!
@VirtualMementos

I also like to think that comfort games dont need to be played to be comforting. Sometimes its that game’s soundtrack that can be comforting, Touhou project is a amazing example, at least for me. because despite me not really playing them that much because i get bored easily over games that just put me back to the beginning if I lose, and thats because of many other factors than just gameplay. I’m also gonna include characters as a way to make a game comfortable (even if it is its own term as a “Comfort Character”) I’ll mention it anyways. Sometimes you just want a game’s soundtrack to keep your mind off of the rough things in life, hell, even combine that with another comfort game, tried that with DRG, it was an amazing time. either way, then we have characters, which is also why fighting games have been so enjoyable for me, sometimes i like seeing this character that is eye-catching or “nostalgic” as described in the video. OR they could be a character that best represents or you feel as if you’d love to be with them. And this kind of thing really entices people like me to try and learn them. I love playing as squiggly in skull-girls, not because she’s top tier or anything, but because she’s cute, and also I really love her parasite companion Leviathan, they’re just a cute duo that i just want to connect with more. I like beowulf because he’s a lovable GOOFBALL. There’s just so many examples that i would love to ramble on about, they have good reasons to come back to these games without em needing gameplay or “Infinite Replayability” sometimes its the little things that can draw someone to enjoy a game, or hell even have a huge investment with its story and characters than actually playing the game. Love this video, thought I’d add my thoughts in there since they were in my mind for quite a bit after I’ve watched this

my comfort game has to be...uhhh...it used to be sonic forces due to how you can play it with half of your brain while still going speedy fast, but then sonic frontiers came out, but then I put 100 hours into that game and burnt myself out with it. now I don't know my comfort game. I guess smash ultimate.

How do you feel about BotW now that TotK came out. For me BotW was my favorite game ever when it came out and was surprised by how expansive it was but now with TotK out it feels like I can’t go back to BotW since it feels so limiting.
@VirtualMementos
@VirtualMementos Жыл бұрын
I can't say for sure at the moment since I haven't bothered revisiting BOTW. But I can say it's still a game that's very important and very good despite... Well TOTK blowing it all out of the water. The sequel added SO much more freedom to an already freeing experience and I love it.

@@VirtualMementos Same here. BOTW is such an important game and changed open world gaming. But after TOTK I tried to go back once and it feels like a tech demo, like only being able to move metal objects and with all the bosses being the same.
