Cards and comics are different. When you slab a card you can still see both sides. When you slab a comic you can't see the inside. There will always be people who refuse to slab their books

So I have a question? I recently got a detective Comics 10 reader copy should that be graded in your opinion? For historical preservation or kept as a reader copy ?
@DanSchawbel8 ай бұрын
ASM1 has over 3,400 unrestored copies on the census so be picky, very picky! No chipping. No tape. No detached cover. Bright colors. Etc.

As times get tougher and they are getting tougher despite what the paid propagandists tell you all books with the exception of the rarest of keys will come down in value.

This is funny, because I just bought the first appearance of Dazzler last weekend. I was always going to buy it at some point though, because I'm trying to buy all of the Uncanny X-Men issues, and I was starting from 144 and working back. I'm only 4 away from having all of the Claremont/Byrne issues now.
@davidallen40268 ай бұрын
The first appearance of Dazzler is not a major key, I agree. However, it's a (minor) key to some people. And then there is her first issue. I bought her #1 when it came out just because I liked painted covers. It was a good read - a hard travelling rock/disco band with a super-hero lead singer tangling with villains, outrunning the mutie haters. Perfect for an MCU show.

X-men 130 is a key...... it's a first appearance of a character. It's not a Blue Chip key like ASM 1, but it's still a key. It's not a manufacfured key as you suggest because of hype. It's a key comic book in the X-men timeline, the first appearance of a member of the X-men. Is it worth investing in to make money... probably not.. Is it worth buying if you are an X-men collector or someone who loves the character..... DEFINITELY...
@kyleroussel8 ай бұрын
I came here to say this. You're exactly right. Keys come in different amounts of relevance. ASM 1 is a big key book. It will always be a big key book. UXM 130 is a smaller key. It is riding high(er) right now than it tyipcally has, and will probably have a new floor value if the rumors pan out. But yes, it is a key book....just not in the same conversation with silver age grails.
@MonotoneCards8 ай бұрын
Most of the content creators talking about collectibles are mainly just here for the money. Some wanna change the definition of the word "key" and haven't even been in this space long enough, but they'll try to pass themselves as someone that has. Just people yapping about how age makes something valuable. To them, a UF4 or a NYX 3 should have no value because it's newer. That type of mindset is a good way of killing the hobby and that it should die with them. If you're young, you should care about xyz old book. If you're old, you should care about the same xyz old book. Every new book is worthless because who even reads nowadays?
@kyleroussel8 ай бұрын
@@MonotoneCards "That type of mindset is a good way of killing the hobby and that it should die with them." Man oh man. I don't know if that's true in actual everyday "fact", but it's certainly true in concept. If people are trying to limit the # or type of books that may be considered valuable, then you're telling all new / young collectors that their stuff isn't worth squat. That's welcoming, isn't it? Guess what happens then? They leave the hobby, and you've got nobody to sell your collection to when you retire (unless you liquidate it). Young people are exceptionally good at carving their own path and making their own game, so if old school collectors/dealers/flippers are adamant about their hardline stance, the next gen will make their own game and their own rules.

I am new to comic book collecting. I have bought a few slabs, but I like reading them, that's what they are made for. I won't spend hundreds, let alone thousands of dollars on anything, I am not that serious (yet). But if it is a book I really like, I might get a high grade slab, and also a low grade raw, or facsimile, that I can have to read. Or, two raw copies, one which I will store and not read, and another one that I can read and enjoy.
@The_Doom_Abides8 ай бұрын
The spec rationalization is a crazy thing and sometimes it's not even accurate when coming to what's a first appearance. This earth x 12 book that everyone got hot for isn't the actual first appearance of the female surfer, I can't remember how to spell her name but you know what I'm talking about. The first appearance is in the earth x wizard special which can be had for $1. But the masses jumped at a 2nd appearance and made it the 1st anyway. Crazy. You're correct about a total slab future as well in my opinion. And this is always going to be the case until cgc grades don't set the market price on each book as they do.
@Markus4658 ай бұрын
I can see older significant books being all in slabs, mainly for preservation. Action #1, Detective #27, Superman #1, FF#1, X-Men #1, ASM #1, AF #15. Again, though, you have no idea exactly how many books are out there. These books are ALWAYS being found in basements and attics at estate sales. I think it'll take more than 20 years for these books to not be found raw. Just my opinion.
@diamondcardbargains8 ай бұрын
100% I’d pass on the ASM 1. Like you said the census will grow and demand is unknown for the future. I used to buy larger books but now I stick to silver age high grade raw batman books just because they’re great comics but also still affordable and I wouldn’t care if they drop in value because it’s not a 10k book

Why is it that all KZbinrs except for a few like two or three maybe only speak about the value of the books or slabs why don't they ever speak about the great stories inside the books or the great art from the artist themselves and the storytellers I'm a true collector. to me resellers are the ones hurting the comic book industry whatever happened to when we used to go to the comic book shops when we were little kids or now as grown ups were we fell in love with great stories great artwork and we told our friends and our friends told us back a different comic books now all KZbinrs only talk about a value about a book or a slab cgc and other companies not all of us care about that crap how about KZbinrs actually read the comic books that they're trying to make a quick Buck on. oh sorry cuz they put in a slab from cgc or other companies. P,S how about we go back to the comic book shops were we fell in love with great stories our favorite superheroes and our favorite villains and stop trying to make a quick buck do the fake community that doesn't exist so called the comic book community that doesn't exist at all. Thank you 🙏 GOD BLESS 🙏🙏🙏

Yes, the purpose of a comic books to be read and enjoyed, and the art is to be appreciated, inside and out. I am looking for my favorite comic books from when I was 9 or 10 years old, so I can relive those memories. I have been finding them, and it brings me joy! I don't care if they are collectable (although a few of them are).
@Dev003x8 ай бұрын
@@davidparker1746 Exactly. Just because a comic isn't a 9.8 and in a sealed case doesn't mean it isn't worth anything. To me it's more valuable without that crap. Because I can actually experience the story.

@@Dev003x My first slab was Incredible Hulk 102, graded 3.0. I didn't understand what I got, then I found out that if I cracked it open, I invalidate the grading. That was disappointing! I got it because I remember enjoying it so much it as an 8 year old, and the iconic cover of Bruce Banner morphing into the Hulk, with the backstory inside. Now I either have to crack it open, or buy another raw copy, and they are not cheap.

Don't buy the asm 1 first of all the writing will always niggle you and second it will be cheaper in 4 to 6 months. Bought a 4.5 in January and should have waited. Have a follow from the UK
