This is why buying what you like is so important. You may not always be able to turn a profit. If it's gonna hurt you to be stuck with a book or sell it for a loss, don't buy it to begin with.

The incentive variants can become a slippery slope and people need to watch themselves sometimes. I agree with what you said about taking a deep breath when the emotion hits and really educate yourself on the purchases you're thinking of making.

Overall the general comic industry is on a bearish flag pattern. Has been since the highs of Covid. I don't think its at the bottom yet based on microeconomics . Now as far as Whatnot, I don't use it. I have no time to sit through an auction. My time is more valuable. Time is what money can't buy, and I hate to waste it.

Agreed. And i find it difficult to sit through live auctions as well.

I would compare beanie babies to funko pops first before comics
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't, simply because funko pops never had investment hype that drove them to outrageous prices. Funkos are more so than anything, simply a fun collectible. But of course, there is no comparing comics to beanie babies, but rather the rhetoric and hype of how we are selling them.

I can’t really speak to the beanie baby hype as I was a baby back then but crazy to think they had investment hype

I have a theory that a sellers market is an illusion and doesn't exist. I don't care what supply does. Supply does not matter if there's no demand. It is ALWAYS a buyers market, the buyers just gotta decide what something is worth to them to make a purchase... Some comics and eras of comics are safe from ever bottoming out because they're not bottoming out right now when it's a bear market. I do think all the gimmicky stuff like variants and ratio books and the optioned indi books could tank if the market is over saturated.

I overall agree with you. The idea of a buyer's market during a downturn moreso means those that have the means can take advantage of lower prices, BUT, lower prices are lower because overall, many people are unable to buy at the same time.

Salesmen have always played to peoples emotions. Back to the day of the used car salesman with the crappy blazer on. If they get you excited and sold it's a no brain deal, they'll have you getting a second mortgage for whatever they're selling. I don't blame them for trying to sell product, that's their job, but the buyer has to do his due diligence to take the step back and make sure it's the right move for them. I'm a dollar bin dirtbag, so not usually dealing with too much newer stuff on these new platforms.

On whatnot you see a lot of sellers selling to other sellers...I looked at it as a modern way of trading comics nationwide within the comic community.

Comics are way to entrenched in culture to be the next beanie babies; the characters are too well known and the medium is too well established. The grading also makes the price knowable and makes purchasing and selling easier.
@JernosComicsPopCulture

I agree, but I wouldn't use the grading industry as a way to validate longevity. That's a whole other conversion, though.

If you are walking into a LCS to buy just the A cover of whatever comic, I hope it's to read.... oh yea people don't do that anymore. No one cares about what's inside just the cover. A sign of the times we are living in. The industry already dealt with a similar problem in the 90s and learned nothing. It's a hard industry to speculate because it's all about condition, on something that's meant to be read and handled. Then there's reading online.... people in this industry say all the time "buy what you want, how you want" then have problems with how and why people are buying. And it's not always about profit... sometimes you do what you do because you love doing it not because you want to .are are dollar.

When I was collecting comics, speculating, the weekly Comics Buyers Guide is what you read to track FOMO. It was pretty simple and straight forward. I remember FOMO hype for ASM 252, Thor 337, Miller Wolverine Mini series!! Today you are hit with so much more information on what FOMO train you might want to jump on. When you buy comic books do your due diligence. Examine where the market is going, what's the print runs, media hype, characters, storyline, artist, long term outlook, etc. If you like the mental high of FOMO gambling don't whine and bitch if your FOMO goes BUSTO! Don't play with the baby formula $$. I used to be a FOMO Warrior. I have thousands of Variants, Continuity, Malibu, etc in my shipping container to prove it!! LOL Otherwise just chill and collect what you like.....

the market already experienced being oversaturated in the 90's, and wow look...comics are still selling for big money even now. Saying that they will die out as a collectible is a farce spun by non fans, and people that that got into the market as a fad follower that realized that markets do drop at times but were only in it for the highs that they saw., not realizing that that was temporary.

I tried WhatNot twice. Between lag, having zero idea what's going to be sold, and ridiculous bidding, I dropped it like a bad habit. I'd love to have time to be a seller though!
