when designing a character, I usually spend most of my time doing research more than anything. also, I always have a "purpose over aesthetic" mentality going on when designing. I just don't like over designed costumes unless the character I'm doing is a flamboyant one or something.

This vid rly has some useful tips for a wide range of creative creators.though i might also share one more suggestion in character creation. i'd usually design a character based on the color scheme that resembles the character.for example, i have a character who's a optimistic teenager in a blue hoodie who just got fire powers as a base design for the pilot episode for for the whole 1st season.the blue hoodie resembles how fun and childish he can be in a lot of situations. but as the story progresses, the color scheme of his attire changes according to what he begins to master as of obtaining magma powers change his color scheme to red/bright orange which also changed his personality to hot and daring.this is just my opinion,of course...

Aaah this video really helps! Specially with how I've been thinking of starting a new webcomic after I finish my shortstory. Also, I have a quick question, does the shortstory genre close completely after the deadline of the contest or does it still stay even if the contest ends? I'm afraid I might not be able to finish mine in time but i still want to finish it but I am concerned if the category will close and I can't add episodes to my story and I might have to repost it into a different genre instead (since I'm even unable to change the genre already.)
@walterostlie4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I've been talking to a few people about that. My guess is that it won't vanish and you'll be able to pick a new genre like comedy/etc and continue the story.

Hi! I just wanted to say that your videos are so awesome and helpful! I'm an aspiring comic book creator/animator and these videos are super useful! I was wondering if you could make a video about using irony to the advantage of the story/characters. Like how in this video you talked about how you wouldn't make a monster baby blue and fluffy, but I wanna know the effect of making them oppose the expected design *on purpose.* (It's usually used for comedic purposes, but what if it's used to create an unsettling or unexpected effect?) I often use irony in my character designs and personalities, and I'd love to hear your perspective on it!

Very helpful video, thanks so much 😊. Do you have advice on how to create composition? Is this something that is developed over time or are there hacks to consider? Have a good one 😊
@walterostlie4 жыл бұрын
You'll get more comfortable as your draw more with what needs or doesn't need to be in a panel. I don't think I've made a specific video about that, though you may be able to clean it from some of the storyboard, paneling videos. However, I'll add that specific topic to my list of videos to do. Hey Walter, not sure if you see this but I post on Webtoon, and I'm considering branching out. Should I try posting on Tapas, Instagram, and Webtoon at the same time? It would be easy for me because I already made the webcomic and can reformat it, but I feel like I would be spamming at that point. Thanks!
@walterostlie4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would be spamming. They are all different platforms with their own audiences. There may be overlap but people have their preferred sites. So go for it. I'd only warn about the amount of time it takes to post several places. It's more work, more distraction for your attention, etc. It may be something you try for a month and see if there is better traction at another location. i used to post my webcomic once a week, then I'd post to tapas a collection of pages every month or two. so staggered releases is also an option. Doesn't hurt to experiment.

you give shapes and colors for like different characters and monster designs and i disagree on some of them,mostly color and fluffiness for monster characters,look at Bondrowed the novel from made in abyss,he is the biggest most evil dush ever but he has big fluffy arms with black and bright purple coloring,im saying that it does not have to be how you say nassiseraly,people can look out of the box and think differently and break trends like that but in general,i get what your saying
@walterostlie4 жыл бұрын
I'd be surprised if I said that was the only way to draw a monster, since I don't believe anyone has to do anything one way. Wasn't I talking about following your gut in that section? Either way, I totally agree with you.
@LeoArmada4 жыл бұрын
@@walterostlie following you gut, I don't think you mentioned that, but you did not say like "this is the only way" but you said it like it was, how do I say this,treditional and usual, that sort of way but you did not fraze it like such,it just came across like that, when you said"evil monsters should be shadow like dark and should have spikes"but I got what you ment by that so it's all good, and to an extent I agree

@walterostlie4 жыл бұрын
@@LeoArmada Right I think it all comes down to knowing the vibe you want to get. Example, if your heroes are walking in a dark cave and suddenly a monster jumps out at them, you'll get a completely different response and vibe if the monster is the typical evil red sharp claws pointy everything versus a cute pink fluffy teddy bear. The teddy bear is going to be almost comedic at first, sure you can make it as evil as you want via the story, but that initial response will be totally different. Then you have stuff that walks the line between both like Killer Klowns from Outer Space. They are supposed to be happy looking clowns with bright clothes, but when you actually look at them, they are pretty scary looking. Of course, people are scared of normal clowns, which is the point I suppose ;-)
@LeoArmada4 жыл бұрын
@@walterostlie ofcorse,but for me,i dont look at the monster color and spikes and furr as just astatics,i first make a invierment which a deadly animal could live in,in a forset it would be hard for a red animal to live,it would look out of place,so i make my monsters melt into the invierment around it,as if it is a product of the place it was born and razed,and place spikes and stuff at parts where it would make sense in an evolutionary side,;sets say the ground is dark with dark plants,i would make that monsters furr of skin dark to blend in ,but ofcorse there is a difference between going in a cave and send a dragon which looks like a evil a$$ and then going in a cave and seeing a goofy stuffed snake LOl
