I’m 20 years old and just started collecting comics within the past year and a half. I love reading the books I own (mostly TPBs, and some single issues), so I’ve never thought about submitting a book for grading. I have my best books in comic capsules, but I’m curious if it’s worth sending them in. Personally, I can’t help but think a graded comic is like a giant trading card, but I do understand the potential value in grading books. How do people decide what to grade? Theoretically, I could have a book that looks like a 9.8 raw, but spend money for someone to tell me it’s a 9.4, and now I lose hundreds of dollars of value and time. I would be devastated if I received a grade significantly lower than expecting. Is selling and trading a must if you’re looking to get deep in the hobby? Sorry for so many questions, but this is coming from someone who is GENUINELY interested and passionate about the material they’re reading. Thanks for any and all feedback!

It's best not to grade just any book. You want to grade a book that has some type of dollar value, sentimental value, maybe it's a book you're speculating on in which you think it will go up in price at a later date and time. There is many reasons why people grade and slab their books. For modern comic books, it's best to select prescreen 9.8 and if your books don't achieve a 9.8 grade, CGC will not encapsulate your book. Instead they will charge you like $8 $9 $10 whatever it is to look at your book and then they will send your rejected 9.8 book back to you. It's up to you to figure out why it didn't get a 9.8 + maybe if you press that book wipe off any fingerprints you see, you can always submit it again for a pre-screen of 9.8. On modern books, I always do a pre-screen of 9.8 most of the time because nobody wants to buy modern books graded at a 9.6 or lower. And if you have a book that's at a 9.6 or lower and it's a modern book in my opinion, it's just not worth it most of the time to get it graded.

If the books value is easily $500+ and you have plans to sell it in the near future, then IMO it’s worth grading. Otherwise, Id keep it raw.

I think the JSA signature verification books are valued equal to the witnessed signature books is because their label looks so much better--which is what CGC was going for.

Sound like a lot of faith is put into the witness, which I don’t get. It’s not like that slab states who the witness was (persons name). There for sure been fraud in the witness program (it’s just not talked about)

I sent in a 9.6 hulk 340 (de slabbed it perfectly) put it an bag & board top loader all very safe and protected- came back a 9.4 with a bottom left Crease!!! 😡 CGC took no ownership of it- highly unprofessional @ssholes.
