Not included in the news release: they are also increasing the prices of their memberships. I'm a Premier member ($149/year normally), and my renewal was due around 1/20-ish. With Auto-Renew, I was supposed to save $20 ($129/year), but the reminder e-mail that I got from CGC in late December said that I'd be charged $159. I called them to ask why, and they confirmed the price increase. They also said that, if I renewed at the time (last week, which I did), I could still renew at the $129 price.
@kevinrcolvin63013 күн бұрын
Thank you for posting this! I just called CGC and since my autorenewal is not due until 2/16, the CSR said that the new membership pricing went into effect today (1/7) and they are no longer offering the $20 discount on auto-renewal. Fortunately, she graciously gave me a $30 credit, but CGC is hitting everyone with not just more fees but as you noted, membership increases. This will be my last year with the company as grading fees no longer cover the FMV on many books.

@@joelb1 For those who might not be aware, one of the benefits of the CGC Premier membership level, previously at $149/year, is a $150 grading credit. They were literally paying people $1 to be a member (to say nothing of the 10% off services discount), a better deal than the Free membership. And with the $20 savings with the Auto Renew, you STILL would get the full $150 credit; they're paying you $21 to be a returning member. Now, it might be just me, but I'm not in the habit of leaving a $20 bill lying on the ground. 🙂 But if that statement credit does not increase commensurate with the membership fee increase, then my renewal with them next year will undergo a harsher scrutiny.

What really gets me is they expect you to estimate a FMV when the FMV only works IF "they" give you "the grade". That's what I thought I was paying them for. If you overestimate like your book comes back with colortouch they aren't gonna refund your money. If they move your book to a different tier you will get "punished' with extra order fee and an additional package to ship. TBH seems like this practice is ripe for a lawsuit but I'm not a lawyer so just my opinion (don't sue me CGC). Here is what I do. I submit everything with a value that assumes low grade and possible restoration. So basically everything goes in at the lowest level. If they want to give me "the grade" then they can charge me. So far they have only upped 2 of my books from 1 submission out of about 20 submissions and 200+ books. The 2 books they upped seemed totally random to me and were just barely at the $1000 FMV. Yet other books like "Batman Adventures 12" (first harley quinn) that got 9.8 they didn't say anything at all (FMV is probably around 1800 now?). It's one thing if you care about insuring your book for the FMV but generally I don't because I only have small $ into the books I have. Also what if you aren't selling. It quickly becomes cost prohibitive to grade your books... and let's be honest there is no way they can say they grade high value books differently than any other book without undermining their credibility (because often low value books become high value later on).

I was literally just building a stack of books to get graded or reholdered this year. Now I’m reconsidering

Also legit question: what value qualifies for the “high value” tier?

NOT TO SOUND HATEFUL because I am comics fan since a small boy and a good person overall. So... CGC comics are NOT worth collecting! They can say all the negative things about comics fans like myself that DO NOT collect CGC graded comics. Why? Inflated grading (perhaps but that is subjective) but prices are certainly super inflated. For what? What does a true collector that loves and appreciates comics get out of an encased comic? Nothing! A true fan and collector of these wonderful pieces of entertainment wants to feel and peruse through the pages and admire the art and stories. I can grade my own comics and do not need anyone else to do so for me. Now, that was me speaking for me. Now let me say something about comics investors. There is a difference between a COMIC COLLECTOR and a COMIC INVESTOR. I am sure a true comic collector knows the difference. I have never in my life bought a comic think of how much it will be worth in the future or for purely an investment reason. Always has been and always will be as a FAN, a Collector. Yes. Eventually, any comic magazine will be worth something much higher than the cover price. Right? Of course. You can, if you can find one, purchase a comic magazine that was printed in the Golden Age, late 1930s, and if in decent condition, it will be worth much much more than its original 10cents cover price. Even the most obscure comic of the era. So, NO. I will never buy a SLAB comic that I will never touch, read and admire? Nah! Not my cup of tea. I will ALWAYS buy RAW comics for reasons stated above.

It does seem like with the unlimited fee , it would behoove CBC to give a book the most generous grade possible to increase their profit . And sure you could say that CGC has more integrity than that, but we've already seen multiple times that that isn't the case.
@donomar7070Күн бұрын
They’re doing that because I feel that they want a lot more people to think about what they’re gonna send in. I don’t think the sales on Cgc slabs is going too well and a lot of people are taking a lot of loss with a lot of books what I’m saying, you get paid more for having a raw book than graded now

I want the $1.50 Costco hotdog tier.

When ppl cut back, these places raise the price to meet their profit. Which means even more ppl will stop sending in books to them. They will raise their prices out of business…

CBCS is superior in quality and customer service imo

When is everyone going to learn that CGC is not all that. Currently, sending your comic(s) to CGC is like asking a Pedophile to watch your children. Just not a good idea!

Now that is an analogy.

I’m personally waiting for PSA to allow autographed magazine submissions because for some reason CGC can’t figure out how to authenticate an autograph on a book that’s slightly larger lol. CGC is literally turning into such a joke.

Screw Slabs, truth be told the only reason for encapsulating my comics is to protect my major keys & grails... they're better ways to that & still openly revisit them visually... I've wasted a few years on CGC Premier... no more.

Wow, Really? I already didn't renew my paid membership. Probably gonna use CBCS or try PSA. Whats crazy their booth was right across from CGC at the NYCC 24 show.

Great business model, people are complaining about service and price, sooooo, raise the price.
@adamleitman81163 күн бұрын
I was planning on submitting this year since i got my black friday yearly membership for $20, i also get 10% off submissions so it's kinda like paying the regular old price. Idk though, really double thinking it

fairly new to comic collecting, why do the majority of collectors prefer CGC over CBCS especially after the issues CGC had in 2024 with bent slabs and the book swapping scam.

All this tells me is that PSA’s gonna be flooded with submissions once they open their comic grading.
