When Peter opened the chest in the new scene it looked like it was breathing. Really creepy and definitely going for that horror vibe they where going for originally.

29:30 I think Harry knew as soon as he found out that his father was the Green Goblin at the end of the second film that Peter did not kill his father, and that even if he did it was in self-defense. Arguably, he probably even started to believe that Spider-Man couldn't have killed his father when he discovered that Spidey was his friend Peter. I think that his struggle was actually his shock at discovering that his father was a supervillain, and he couldn't accept that fact. So he took it out on Peter as a way to cope. At the end of the movie, he realizes that all he's done is make things even worse and that not only has he lost his father but he's lost his friend as well. He didn't need closure on his father. He already had it. That wasn't the point of his arc. His arc was reconciling with Peter.

The butler did mention how harry was trying to protect his fathers honor. Also think about how Harry found out Peter was Spiderman. Now lets go back to “Spiderman 1” Where Harry got cucked by Spiderman… All this time he was getting cucked by his best friend. That’s another reason for his dislike with Peters lying in my opinion.

One thing I think you might have forgotten regarding the Editor's Cut: even though Bernard doesn't outright spell out that Norman died by his own hand, Peter *did* tell Harry earlier in the film that Norman killed himself trying to kill him. At the time, Harry might not have believed him, but he most likely chose to believe those words in the final act when he goes to help Peter.

Does anyone know the story about Sam Raimi's original plan for the climax? I read somewhere that after he was forced to add Venom and Eddie to the plot, he wanted Gwen to be the damsel-in-distress instead of MJ. Sam promised Kirsten Dunst that she wouldn't be the damsel for the third time straight, but, of course, Sony forced him to make MJ the helpless hostage again. Gwen being the hostage in the climax makes more sense in the long run. Looking at the few scenes of her and Eddie together, there's a sense of Eddie making up an imaginary relationship between them. The first thing he does after Spidey saves Gwen during the crane scene is ask him for a photo; his immediate concern for Gwen is almost like an afterthought. When Gwen later tells him they only "had a coffee," Eddie's facial expression darkens like someone hearing something they didn't want to hear, especially if they're a narcissist. It gives the hint that Eddie concocted his relationship with Gwen; he may have done it for status since she's the police captain's daughter. P.S. That scene seems cut short since it ends with Eddie's reaction and cuts to Mary Jane and Harry, so more Gwen and Eddie dialogue might've been there to flesh out their non-existent relationship. Then Gwen kisses Spider-Man in front of a crowd of people like it's nobody's business despite being in a "relationship"; someone with a huge ego like Eddie would have issues with that. There's even a deleted scene of Gwen dumping Eddie when he goes to her house after he gets fired. Venom kidnapping Mary Jane just because she's Peter's girlfriend is too contrived; him taking Gwen instead would be the more personal, egocentric move for Eddie. Gwen is Peter's classmate and Eddie's "girlfriend-in-title-only" before she breaks up with him and starts seeing Peter. Eddie has more reasons to go after Gwen than to take the easy route with Mary Jane. Then Peter would feel guilty for a classmate getting dragged into his Spider-Man business.

Looking at the set photos, it looks like Gwen would’ve been present at the final battle in some way but I’m highly doubtful they ever shot her being kidnapped. You’re absolutely correct tho, it would make complete sense for her to be the one in danger. There’s a clip in the trailer of MJ in her waitress outfit talking to Harry about forgiveness, which was presumably intended to be during or right before the final battle. It’s interesting looking at the relationship between Eddie and Gwen. Like you say, he’s a complete narcissist who convinces himself they’re in a long term relationship after one date. I believe the novelisation expands upon this even more. I’d love to see more footage of Gwen, because as it is in the final film, she really has no business being there at all

@@TheGargantuanAppleHMPBTS Sam did shoot some scenes of her in Peril but they never finished it when they decided to change it to be Mary Jane and the original scene involves her looking at the news and seeing that Venom was Eddie and showing up at the final battle to see what happens so that's all they shot again like I said they shot some scenes for her in distress but they never finished everything so it wouldn't make sense to make a ultracut with her in it since there's not much footage of her and distress but everything else that she shot at the battle site was intended for her to be witnessing what happens to Eddie and Spider-Man

Gwen being the hostage doesn't make any sense for the story because Eddie's motivations don't matter, it's about Peter and harry. Ultimately MJ was the one they both loved so it's the only thing that could bring them together, but raises the emotional stakes to a personal level. Plus it works for Eddie too, it makes him more sadistic to go after a girl Peter loved that meant nothing to him. The only reason to make Gwen the hostage is to validate the one scene from earlier and I don't buy that.

Them removing the Aunt May scene at the end ruined the flow of the third act. It felt like they rushed to the ending. The Sand Castle scene was supposed to happen after Peter got rid of the symbiote and was supposed to be the way Sandman meets Venom. They cut that part from the Editor's Cut for obvious reasons.

Exactly. Like the editor had no clue what made the movie work or why things were done, he just tried to fit it under the existing runtime for whatever reason and lopped an important scene. Even the butler scene, which I don't really miss and kind of like Harry going to help Peter without ever really knowing if he killed Norman or not, was put in by Raimi for a reason that made sense to him. He's doing a riff on Frank Capra movies where an unimportant side character holds the key to unlocking what the more central one knows deep inside. I trust the director more than a random editor.

If Sony were to do another new cut of Spider-Man 3, let this be the extended cut or a newer version of the movie. 1. Bring back all the deleted scenes that were in the editors cut 2. Use a mix of both Christopher Young and Danny Elfmans score that is best suited to the scene 3. Restore some of the missing scenes abandoned in the editors cut from the theatrical cut 4. Keep the arranged scenes from the editors cut as they flowed a bit better in terms of pacing compared to the theatrical cut 5. Even more scenes that didn’t make it to the final cut like the character Dr. Wallace talking to Sandman 6. More Venom Then, you got yourself the definitive version of Spider-Man 3 that Sam Raimi originally intended to show.

One pattern I noticed is that the reshoots in the theatrical cut tend to have brighter lighting, like the Ursula scene and the Peter vs. Harry pre-fight talk. Also, Maguire and Franco seem less bulky in the theatrical version. I wonder if it was intentional or if the lighting crew had to make new setups without any available reference to how it was before.

Seems a lot of the reshoots were shoddily done in general. The best example is them seemingly losing the steel blade prop from the final fight, if you look close at the part where Peter breaks out of Venom’s web restraints and grabs the steel blade he was smacked with before, you will notice that after he swings it, it cuts to him slapping venom in the face with a bent metal pipe instead. This was originally meant to follow into venom being sliced through his side (?) and becoming what I can only describe as a monster straight from The Thing, or Sam Raimi’s visual representation of like revenge or rage or whatever lol.

With No Way Home really bringing attention back to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man universe, and really hope we will get the footage from Spider-Man 3 that seems to have been lost to time. Also, it seems Raimi himself is very willing to return for Spider-Man 4 now with Tobey, as well as several of the other actors who were part of the original trilogy (Kirsten Dunst and Thomas Haden Church); so you've got most of the main players willing to do it, it's now just up to the studio. It would be very cool of Sony, if they actually decide to move forward with Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire, to release a revised version of the third film OR - if that's too expensive - just dump all of the footage on a re-release of the film in maybe a deleted/alternate/extended scene format. It's always drove me crazy that many of the scenes in the trailers for Spider-Man 3 back in 2006 and 2007, were never featured in the actual film. The hype for the third film was unparalleled back in the day, and I spent countless hours on different forums and pre-KZbin video sharing sites rewatching the trailers countless times. To see some of what I was so hyped for not come to fruition in the final cut of the film was disappointing, and I hope I'll get to see it one day. But, even if not, a new Sam Raimi & Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film in the 2020s would be pretty damn awesome!

What i love most about the editors cut is the rearrangement of Peter outting Eddie and his fight with Harry in the theatrical version he beats up Harry then outs Eddie and it feels like he went bad too fast then goes to petty office drama. With the editors cut it feels like a steady downwards progression from outting Eddie and almost killing Harry then ultimately hitting MJ which makes him see the errors of his way. Idk it just feels like a better progression into darkness for Pete to me

I want to see the uncut final battle with Peter pulling out Eddie but all he's able to pull out is his skeleton (with a "venomized" skull) because Venom had already absorbed him and was just using his skeleton as a framework to move around. It's theorized because of that, that any prior scenes of "Eddie" Venom talking/fighting with Spiderman was actually just Venom using Eddie's body as a puppet and that Eddie had already been gone mentally until he assimilated him. Apparently that was cut because testing audiences found it too disturbing.

I’d really love to see Young’s score released someday, it’s one of the last well thought out superhero scores in the last few years, in my opinion. It was great to hear some old material in NWH, but it never felt genuine, as if a higher up told Giacchino he could only use themes in specific places. (Elfman’s Peter Parker theme was used too much, would’ve preferred more uses of the Spidey theme) I’m fine with the leaked sessions here on KZbin, but I feel like there’s something more special about owning a physical copy of a score, especially this one.

@@TheGargantuanAppleHMPBTS I just finished my rewatch of the whole trilogy: Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2.1, both of which I’ve always loved, and then Spider-Man 3: Editor’s Cut, for the first time. I’ve seen the theatrical cut of 3 many times and liked it less and less each rewatch. I was utterly shocked at how much I enjoyed watching the E.C. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes when the proper music, structure, and storytelling is there. I felt like I was finally watching the proper part 3 to Sam Raimi’s previous two films. It’s definitely still the weakest of the three, as there are many flaws still present, but somehow this version took a movie I otherwise didn’t like, into a movie I actually enjoyed. I don’t think I’ll ever watch the theatrical cut again, it’s the Editor’s Cut for me. I thank you once again for your amazing commentary and analysis that contributed greatly to my newfound appreciation for this version of the film!

It makes it seem like the suit is influencing him more and more and almost taking control of him. So much so he catches it and stops himself for a second.

I don't love SM3, but I've come around on it quite a bit. It's like this old joke: "I used to think you were a screw up, but so many screw ups have come along since that you've advanced in line without doing anything." That describes my feelings toward the film. It isn't great, but it's placement has risen because of what's come after, especially just in the last couple of years. It is frustrating movie, but it understands storytelling (a rarity now) and I can sense it trying very hard to make everyone happy, it just serves too many masters. I also think it gets more right than it gets credit for. Anyway, I think the newer cut is slighter better and I'll take it.

One of the changes I’m very conflicted with has to be the interaction between Harry and Peter before they fight. I think the one in the Editor’s Cut is really good because of the callback to Norman’s body on the sofa with Peter laying in that exact spot and the very casual nature of how the two talk before brawling. That said, one thing that has always bugged me is the segue into Harry’s line about how MJ used to kiss him. Something about it never jived with me, especially with Peter suddenly being visibly pissed. The theatrical cut, I also like because of how Harry actually calls out Peter on his lack of care for MJ while also rubbing the rekindling of his own relationship with her in his face. There’s also a neat juxtaposition of Peter’s “What did you do to her” because it can be interpreted as him either acting selfishly or selflessly since Harry did force Peter and MJ’s breakup but Peter already treated MJ poorly. But this version of the scene only works in the context of the theatrical cut since the order of scenes makes the fight the start of Peter’s downfall where he’s still got some good left in him while the editor’s cut places it later in it so it makes sense he’s less serious and more jokey, especially when the dance sequence comes after the fight.

I’ve always belived, it made complete scene for John Jamieson to be Venom, even it isn’t comics accurate. He would have the motivation to go after Peter, they already established him being an astronaut and they could’ve taken inspiration from the animated series with him being the one who finds the symbiote in space.

Release 'Spider-Man 3.1' (Extended Cut) This petition is about the 2007 blockbuster film, 'Spider-Man 3'. Although the film was a success, as time went on, many unused scenes and deleted footage have resurfaced on the Internet over the past 12 years. Leading many to speculate what could exist and what could be added into the original cut. Numerous sources online confirm the existence of many unused scenes that never made the original cut or editor's cut. Many unused scenes that we the fans would love to see used in an extended version of the film. (3.1) in 2007, Sony Pictures Entertainment released 'Spider-Man 2.1' an extension of the original film in an effort to reinstate unused scenes and drive hype towards the upcoming 'Spider-Man 3'. In 2017, Sony Pictures Entertainment released the Blu-Ray box set of all 5 of the previous 'Spider-Man' films with an added 'Spider-Man 3 Editor's Cut' in order to drive up interest for the upcoming film 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'. We the fans are eternally grateful that Sony continues to support the 'Spider-Man' franchise and community. Even though the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Series has concluded, we as fans of the original trilogy are still as passionate about our favorite webhead than ever. I came here right after the Spider-Man 2 video. Also this video is valuable content and was worth watching for me. Thanks for making it. I like Spider-Man 3 but I never saw the editors cut, because it's relatively new and not available on german sites. So I will probably need to buy it on an US site. First of all the alternate score soundtrack is a nice addition to the 4k bluray version. Good to know! It seems like the Editors Cut is a great version of the movie, but hold down due to some removals for more independent character choices. This seems like an odd change at some points and I agree with you, that some of the removed scenes were important. The editor had the one time chance to give us some more deleted scenes. He kinda had the power and responsibility, but didn't used it. Or wasn't allowed to used it. Sad. Spider-Man 3 is in such a broken condition. Too many story lines at once because of Sony. And now we have two different cuts, but the second one seems like rushed. Because of Sony. :(

I did not like it when they removed the aunt may scene either since i feel like it still would work and its a key scene even for the editor's cut. I totally agree with keeping some of the theatrical soundtrack since that matched way better that new ones. But those new scenes were absolutely fantastic additions to the movie. I actually made an edit of the movie myself where it has some of the removed scenes and new elements of the editor's cut. And yh I've noticed the black side bars on the new scenes while editing 😂. I wish they would have taken more time and even get Raimi to improve it more, but either way its great to have another version that adds to the story significantly. Great video!!

Editor's Cut should have restored the scene where Peter hallucinates Venom in a mirror while wearing the black suit. The final film just hard cuts to him removing the suit looking kind of nervous/scared, but that reaction makes no sense without that context.

No lie after being very curious about the Editors Cut for Spider Man 3 I recently saw a video on Facebook of today showing Theatrical Cut and Editor Cut was being compared to side by side,The editor cut was so dark that I had to literally replay the Facebook video and to see Eddie Brock being nothing but a walking skeleton and a corpse from the symbiote eating his entire life away definitely scared me. Seeing that ending made me shocked as Peter Parker seeing Eddie entire face and body was nothing left but a skeleton definitely gave me chills and spooked me out. So….I had to look into deeper and do my research which I came across this video. Thank you so for explaining and showing some things from both versions and different comparisons because some scenes in the editors cut I wish they kept it but I can see why they didn’t. Another thing I would like to mention is the structure scene in the editor cut got me lowkey laughing because who in the right mind will kill their best friend and then after that feeling good about it and dancing like nothing ever happened? 😂 it’s DARK but I’m glad they reorganized the structure scenes because if SPM3 would’ve came out in this generation especially with the editor cut….It would’ve been cancelled.

Here is my arrangement of the scenes in the Editor's Cut (I returned 3 scenes that were in the Theatrical Cut but were deleted in the Editor's Cut): After the dance scene, Peter and Gwen go to a jazz club. After the shower scene, the dialogue between Peter and Aunt May begins. Then there is the scene where the butler tells Harry the truth about his father's death. Next, the Sandman gets out of the sewers and the scene with the castle. And the last scene is where Peter apologizes to Mr. Ditkovich. Well, then everything is as it was in the Editor's Cut.

As clunky as the theatrical version is for Harry's turn, it's still the better version. Looking at a picture shouldn't be enough of a change for Harry. I don't think that's any sort of real emotional catalyst at all. Bernard telling Harry what I believe Harry knew all along finally breaks his denial, and his drive to uphold his idealistic image of his father. It also rhymes with Pete's version of this with Aunt May - an older parental figure's love being able to break Harry/Peter out of their emotionally-blind loneliness. For all this talk of agency, all the Editor's Cut did was make the world feel small and lonely. It feels colder, but that goes against the very themes of the movie. People were always there to help and love both Peter and Harry - they were just too blind to see or too proud to ask. The Editor's Cut makes it feel as if they truly didn't have help.

Haven’t seen the editor’s cut, but I must say the decision to remove other characters’ impact on the leads’ ultimate decisions is baffling. For a movie in which every villain (including Spidey) becomes worse by venturing further into isolation, the redemption being triggered by others reaching out is one of the only truly emotional catharses of this film. Even more baffling is to do that WHILE LEANING FURTHER INTO the addiction metaphor. If you want to make a statement about addiction, removing a “recovery through human connection” theme seems like the last thing you would want to do.

This is a great in-depth analysis. I didn't even know an alternate cut of Spider Man 3 existed until I watched this video, which kind of shows how incompetent Sony in when it comes to the movie itself. Hopefully, the Editor's Cut will make it's way back into circulation. I have one quick question, does the Editor's Cut remove Venom from the movie completely or is he still involved in the climax? The only reason I ask this is because according to Raimi, Venom wasn't supposed to be in the movie at all. The movie was only suppose to be about Sandman and Harry as the New Goblin. However, Sony put Venom in because they wanted to bank off of fan service, which is why the villain cast was crowed.

I just realized that the sequence of events from the separation of Peter and Mary Jane to the dance scene is the same as in the novelization. Bob Murawski (editor) restored the original sequence of scenes. Except two. There was supposed to be a scene with Betty and Hoffman after Jameson fired Eddie. It was to be followed by the scene of the flight and Peter putting the black suit back into the chest, which were shown in the Editor's Cut. Then there was supposed to be Eddie and Gwen break up scene, and then the coffee shop scene was supposed to start. #ReleaseTheRaimiCut #ReleaseTheWebbCut
