I think Ethan's shirt might hint at the right answer, here: Nick Fury is simultaneously right and wrong, because we can't know the true effect of his actions until we gain multiversal omniscience or (the cooler option) can perfect time travel. If he kills the next Hitler as a baby, he's a hero--but only in a sort of karmic sense. Without the ability to see the full tapestry of possibility, he's just a guy who shot a baby and is, therefore, a monster. The problem, of course, comes from the fact that Fury (and presumably his benefactors) isn't omniscient, making the question a matter of moral absolutes rather than of morality: is it okay to ALWAYS act on predictions and possibilities (rather than to just react to evidence or enemy actions) to keep your people safe? I'd say probably not...but, by not killing Spider-Man, clearly Fury doesn't ALWAYS do that. So, yes, he's still potentially a monster, but if Spider-Man had turned out to be Spider-Hitler (coming to an Incursion near you!) his lack of pre-emptive strike would have been the wrong call. Which, again, brings us back to Schrödinger's assassin. That said, I would have picked Emma Frost. Winter Soldier's obviously the better choice, but I think we're going to miss out on seeing how well droll commentary can keep the enemies of Earth at bay.

***MY FAN THEORY*** Because Uatu broke his oath by preventing forces of nature like Galactus, he is considered an outcast by The Watcher Council so the whole Marvel Universe's Earth is considered an abomination by the Council and it shouldn't exist. Now there will be an even greater galactic threat that will right this wrong. The 'Sin' is Uatu's greed to WATCH by changing natural events, because all stories should end, and this reflect on comic readers lust for entertainment and wanting more stories even though every story has been made. The rift with Fury is because he's actually getting out there and doing something, representing comic readers who are getting off their asses and creating stories rather than just standing by an being entertained like Uatu comic readers.

I think comparing Nick Fury to the justice system in the respect that it's better to have a terrible system than nothing at all is a poor argument solely because how they operate is completely different. Nick Fury acts as judge, jury and executioner whereas with the justice system for all it's faults at the very least has due process in the form of trials and the right of representation at said trails before a verdict is rendered.

great review! i loved reading that story. great weaving of the whodunit mystery and the way he shut down thor was the biggest payoff for me. hell we still don't know what he whispered to him. great job guys. i think fury was justified in stopping legitimate threats but not potential ones, which stumbles somewhat into minority report/ pre-crime territory and that's just morally complex amongst other things.

I think Nick _was_ justified, but his loss of restraint as he aged ruined any good intention or effect he had. I would say that Nick Fury is right in the sense that there needs to be a "Man On The Wall" but it probably should be someone who is superpowered like Emma Frost so they can avoid the moral dilemma of if they are right.
@DavidTSmith-jn5bs10 жыл бұрын
I'll have to look in on MarvelExplained and Comicstorian to confirm this, but if the explanation for the "Original Sin" title wasn't explained in the series, then I have a theory. I think The Original Sin is MURDER! Cain killed Abel possibly because he was jealous of Abel for providing the favored sacrifice to God (killing a first-born lamb from his flock vs. Cain's sacrificing his first harvest from his section of The Garden of Eden). Using that metaphor, Fury could be Cain in that he felt that he was justified in his position as The Man on the Wall while Uatu the Watcher felt, along with the other Watchers including his father Ikor, that he was paying penance for being responsible for the wiping out of an alien race by giving them the "gift" of atomic energy that they used as destructive weapons for their own pre-emptive strikes first against each other and later neighboring star systems. Incidentally, I was a little disappointed that the writers of this "flashback" didn't tell the original ending where a few members of the alien race survived and one of them told the Watchers "It was YOUR fault that we were given atomic power before we were ready to receive it. May you and your race be cursed for the rest of your days!" It added more impact to the story and prompted Ikor's feelings of guilt over what the Watchers did. Another great installment. Especially liked The Morality Debate. My response would be no, Nick acting as judge, jury and executioner is just as wrong as Frank Castle doing it to gangsters without due process. Worse than Castle's vigilantism in fact because Nick's passing judgment on entire races as well as untested individuals without proper examination of the facts. Basically I would say "Hey Nick! Who died and made YOU God?"

I actually really enjoyed Original Sin. I thought that what they did with Nick Fury was fantastic. It's a shame you guys didn't touch on what the Original Sin was. The whole thread going back to The Watcher and his people and how his father thought they should intervene in peoples affairs. Thinking they would make their lives better. And the one time that The Watchers did do this by giving a alien race tech they ended up killing each other. And from that point on The Watchers as a race decided to stay out of peoples affairs. And how The Watcher himself was so conflicted with what happened with the alien race and it crushed him to see that his father was "wrong" in bettering people. So yeah I thought you guys did a great job.

Nick Fury always seemed to do this shady shit for the good of the public though it seems his responsibilities seem to expand every time something gets revealed. THIS- Should have been what they based the "Secret Wars" series on. They should have implied there were more "Hunting Spiderman" type things that he went through with. It should have been more focused on the Earth itself, or his reasons for letting only certain parts of space do what they've done for larger/more nefarious/unknown reasons. Does anyone know if they elaborated, or added/retconned more after this? OR the real Fury becomes, basically, a villain and destroys his bosses and goes rogue. You could sacrifice one of the more disappointing secrets with knowledge tied directly to Nick Fury mind-wiping one of the heroes after they learned too much once.

Really liking the channel guys, good moral discussion as well. From your discussion, I think there are points on both sides, but Fury went too far. The spider-man thing shows the kind of people that may have been lost even if he made one mistake. I haven't read too much Marvel stuff yet, but I've been getting more into it. Would you guys consider doing a video on the Illuminati? I've wondered why they made a superhero group named after an evil conspiratorial organization. I know you guys about why Bucky was the best choice for Marvel to choose, here and on the podcast (revitalizing the character and everything) but I still would have loved to see the punisher. He litterally would not give a crap in who killed, which seems to be a large component of being the man on the wall. Though im still really happy to see Bucky actaually having a purpose again. YOu know what I think would be awesome (love to hear your opinon on this) would be if Marvel had the Punisher and Bucky be the man on the wall. I think they could have easily made that work by saying, :look how bad Fury was getting as he got older, it was because no one was there to check him. We'll have the Punisher and Bucky, who are both morrally ambigious, but Bucky they can check the other person when it seems like they go too far" I think that would have been an awesome way to do it and it would make two cool characters relevant again in the Marvel Universe.
