@Carl os Yes, people who do professional jobs don't do them for free. Controlling, organizing and producing is part of the charity. Not sure who you expect to fill those positions - some hockey moms from a local elementary school? The most efficient charities are local ones, like food banks, which mostly can rely on expertise which is basic common sense and therefore just needs enthusiastic hobbyists to be kept up. You could even go out, give every homeless you encounter a pound and end up with 100% efficiency. But as soon as it gets to building stuff, putting films on tv and international support, this cannot be done by people spending time beside their day job. Most non-profit charities of this size are in the 10% to 33% bracket, which is considered to be reasonable. It is not just "staff costs" but the general overhead. It allows full time position in offce spaces with phones and computers (interestingly nobody would ever question the material costing money, it is always the human cost, as if earning money with one's work would be by default negative, which also gives a hint why the yellow press loves jumping on that bandwaggon). 14 million is a big number, but it has to be held next to the 80 million pounds collected and distributed. One can always wonder how much more a CEO should get paid than the average employee. But the numbers are not outrageous for a competent candidate for job like this. After all one also does not want them to waste money because of personal incompetence. When that hockey mom burns a batch of cookies, it is a matter of a few minutes work and a new pack of flour, if the CEO did that, it could mean stalling projects for months, burning through the budget by having people on hold, or just general inefficiency. You don't want that either.

@Carl os So your argument is that things are instransparent because people don't look for the information which is available on the website of the charity? The red nose is the most public fund raising event. Of course people connect it to the broadcaster involved. But at no place - not even once - it is claimed that this was a BBC charity, so I am not sure why Comic Relief should be blamed for that misconception. And, nope, all money is accounted for. "Being accounted for" is not the same as being spent on the specific purpose of the charity. They have a detailled statement about income, costs and their own overhead, including all reinvested money, profits and dividends on their website.
