This was honestly very satisfying to watch. I've had to learn this because I have three kids and when I was a kid, my mom was rubbish at receiving gifts. So remembering the slap in the face reactions she had to my attempts to be generous, I have decided to try not to tell mine that I really, REALLY hate cucumber-melon scented candles and that I never intended to start collecting Pop! figures much less continue that collection for several years as they see that I now own a Pop! figure that they gave me and conclude that I must like Pop! figures and therefore give me three every damned year. I found a nice shelf and I keep a few in the box in case they're worth something someday.

Well, there's something in between always. You can be genuine in saying that you appreciate the attempt, but can't really relate to that gift. Even though I admit in the case of pop figures it's a bit too late for this... 🙈 Try telling your kids something you would love to get for Christmas beforehand. Stress it even if you think the message wasn't clear enough. My mom does that. She literally said to me this year: "Don't buy anything, I have everything and more and I don't need anything. I'm going to a concert tomorrow with your dad, gather your aunts and cousins and pay for the tickets and we're all good". Well, that's what we did. Happy early Christmas to my mom. She likes photos, so she'll get some extra pictures of the concert evening on Christmas eve to celebrate with the rest of us.

I'm remembering my grandmother. She was a bitch to buy gifts for. I tried so hard through my childhood. She had rings that she only took off to sleep so I bought her a little thing with the post to put rings on at night and she said, "What do I need with this? It'll just clutter up my bedroom." She always wore housecoats so I thought, "Can't go wrong with a housecoat!" "What do I need this for? I already have six housecoats!" Finally one year I was just putting minimal expenditure and effort into it because I already knew that she was going to hate whatever I got her, so I got her three padded clothes hangers. She loved them! Go figure.

I'm Dutch and we're stereotypically rude and honest. This is not something we would do. At Sinterklaas (a month before Christmas) my family usually goes; 'I very appreciate the intention. But it's not something I like. Do you want it back? No? Can I bring it to the thriftshop then? Yes? Good.' Then again, the warm/loving moment is usually shared befóre opening the package, because there's a long and funny (and sharp and sometimes heckling and mean, depending on the gift) poem attached. It's part of the Dutch tradition.

@@swc19972000 Haha, well, you're welcome to visit :) I mentioned Amsterdam because...well..youknow, it's the thing people come to see. Not thát impressive (not to me at least, I've been there thousands of times, I live 5 mins away), but still. Then there's Kinderdijk, which is the opposite of the (hyped up) red light district. Kinderdijk has all the windmills and the re-enactment of the oldfashioned Dutch etc. And then there's Hilversum, which is a very boring city, but that's how most of our cities are, and there's a thriftshop and a shoppingcentre. xD I feel that, together, they resemble the Netherlands perfectly. Oh and Dutch humor is also honest, but mostly leans more towards rudeness than politeness, haha. They're very funny, but they scream a lot. There might be some examples online of Dutch humor, like the Satirical Zondag met Lubach. He made a video..Netherland's Second, for Trump. That one was quite rude, but also funny. Either way, consider yourself invited to experience the Dutch :) Just expect there will also be dickheads, that we say a lot of 'hoor' (which means hear me out, but it's pronounced as whore) and that you'll get run over by at least one bike in Amsterdam. ^_^
