It's so easy to disregard human life, to look at it as something worthless until the time comes when its your life and the life of your loved ones that are put on the chopping block. Those people who say "you can't make omelets without cracking a few eggs", well they've never been one of the quote unquote "eggs" because if they knew how it feels like to be treated as worthless collateral damage along with everything and everyone they care about, they wouldn't be able to say that term so easily.

@@CupcakeDeity Eh, philosophy is a bit more intricate than that, this would only be the utilitarian branch of Ethics which is only one branch of many possible ethical systems. There are others that would say the right thing should be done regardless of the outcome, which usually leads to good outcomes regardless, whereas, with utilitarianism you could rob a bank with sinister intentions and in the process save a person who was accidentally locked in the bank vault and be considered righteous because your robbery produced a good result. Now, what Mark is considering here, it that perhaps it is okay to disrupt the status quo in order to better the livelihoods of many with no intention of putting people at risk, where as Dinosaurus was willing to blow up Vegas with or without people in in.

A waste of a space that breeds indifference and corruption. So the way I see it is that he was killing two birds with one stone. @@adamrussell9389 I don't agree with, "The end never justifies the means." It 100% IS a slippery slope to stand on, but the thing is, anything can be taken to extremes to the detriment of themselves and/or others. The only thing stopping anyone from the extremes is logic and empathy. Look at obesity. That's an unhealthy extreme. On the flip side you have things like anorexia. The key to it all, maybe even to life in general, is balance. That's the hard part!

@@Psychoman24 which (again) I was comparing Mark’s new MO to that of Nolan… I can’t remember who, but I think it was Freud (and I’m paraphrasing here): that “all sons, consciously or subconsciously) wish to supplant their Fathers”.. but at the end of the day, whether the means are “justified” or not, the ‘preservation of Life’ is what’s most important. I know Rob’s view on this and many people share it: “sometimes ya just gotta kill” (pulling from DC w/ the Batman/Joker dichotomy)… which I agree with to an extent, take the Joker (again) for example-the guy gets sent to Arkham, escapes, then goes after the Bat-Family or Gotham’s citizenry…. If he’d (Batman) killed Joker YEARS ago, how many people would still be alive??? I get that, but on the other side of that coin you have “necessary Evil”. Well NO EVIL is necessary… point, blank, period. Who is Batman (or anyone for that matter) to decide who lives or dies? No one person should have that say. That’s why we have the judicial system in place that we do. You have to be judged by “a jury of your peers”….. LIFE is sacred. We cannot resurrect the dead, and there’s ALWAYS a better way! With Batman’s resources he could Cryogenically freeze Joker and keep him under some stupid ultra-max containment device in the Bat Cave… We don’t have the power to Grant Life (and yes I know that humans reproduce, resulting in their offspring), so why do we think we should get to say who can stay and who’s gotta go? Having said that (and I’ll close with this), Murderers, child molesters, the un-redeemable-yes, I believe they ‘gotta go’… but I agree with you that ‘slippery slope’, but along with empathy and whatever, you forgot the most important thing: FREE WILL! We were given the gift to make the choices that will impact our own, as well as the lives of others. If Someone chooses to commit Murder-throw them UNDER the Jail-but I strongly disagree with “A Life for a Life! When someone commits Murder, their victims aren’t only the one’s who suffer, the Families and Friends are also victims. They’ve lost their Son, Daughter, Friend, Lover… to execute someone-you’re creating more victims-the Family, Friends, etc of the guilty! I’m not saying I 100% disagree with putting someone to Death, because a Judge and Jury deem this individual ‘an irredeemable danger to Society’. This is what separates us from Animals!

And the whole Vegas thing is kind of like what Zod did in Man of Steel and it perfectly shows his and Dinosaurus' skewed views. Zod wanted to create a new Krypton when there are two planets literally right next door that are perfectly suitable for terraforming. There was zero need to wipe out an entire species in the process, just like how there was zero need to destroy Vegas when there are SO MANY OTHER PLACES TO DO THE EXACT SAME THING WITHOUT KILLING ANYONE!

Just to point out something for all of you wannabe supervillains out there, there's a reason why we don't actually just cover the desert and the Earth in general with solar panels. The heat passed off by all the light actually interferes with the function of solar panels at hotter temperatures and no matter what type of energy generating mechanism is used, the local climate of the area is likely going to be altered because of how the panels or focusing mirrors and generators absorb more heat and/or at a much higher rate than the normal desert landscape. Unfortunately unlike in comic books, there's no easy solution to the problems we all face. That's not to say I don't agree with some of what Rob says but in real life it's sadly the truth that getting people to get out of the way isn't the only obstacle to progress. We're all flawed beings with a less than perfect understanding of the situation at hand, especially when money and feelings get involved.

See Rob I hear you and I agree, not all life is valuable, but I'd argue it's not invaluable. Yeah the destruction of Las Vegas gave humanity a giant solar panel that would create clean energy, but literally no one had to die for this to happen. No one NEEDED to. Everyone could've lived in the end and probably gotten some much need therapy, because gambling is an addiction and not something they should die for. None of them needed to, had to, or should have died in the first place. Hell Nevada is an empty as state with miles of desert, if Dinosaur or humanity wanted, they still could've built this, just somewhere outside the damn city. He didn't need to blow it up on the first place, he just wanted an excuse to commit mass genocide. Are there people that should be taken out because they contribute nothing to society? Yeah, but it's not the people that are always pointed at. It's often the ones society props that are leading to it's collapse. Dino got close to understanding that but fell into the trap Mark is. That regular people cause the biggest problems. It's not. It's always people with the actual power to influence and change society. People like Mark and Cecil. A net gain is only good if you are losing something of little value. What exactly do we gain from a bunch of random people with little influence on society that were just trying to live their lives day by day, that clearly have a gambling problem and need therapy, up and die because some edgy, pessimistic loser kills a didn't like how they just existed? A solar panel? Something that could have been built literally anywhere??? If you want to take out people, take out those actively doing harm. If you were really a hero, you'd try to save as many people as possible. With Mark's power, he told could if he tried. Thinking this was the only way. Thinking "you can't make omelette without breaking a few eggs" isn't how you should think about people because aren't eggs. People are complicated. Mark is well aware of that, he's the walking embodiment of a complicated situation.

This was my exact reaction. I love the channel, but thought it was silly af that Rob was arguing against human lives being over valued is the reason something like this would never happen. ... in reality, it would be people complaining about the cost of building these solar panels, companies complaining about how their profits would be hurt by this project, etc. It's crazy to think "no one wants to die for these solar panels" is the reason society doesn't progress.

Yes! Rob (and a bunch of others on here) are being fooled into thinking of this stuff as a zero-sum game. The only reason that it seems that way is because of the quasi-fascistic version of hypercapitalism that we practice today. Humanity developed as a species through cooperation and mutualism. You could call it "the greater good" if you like but the main flaw in the utilitarian point of view is that someone has to assign values to everything. Is human life inherently valuable? I'm not sure. But, is the answer to the world's problems allowing lives to be extinguished? Obviously not! The problem is the status quo. I agree with Rob that superheroes tend to be protectors of the status quo. They kind of have to be or else their stories would be far more complicated and deeply controversial. The fact is that Invincible could rebuild whole cities, help establish space bases, and lots of other stuff. Atom Eve can literally turn the desertified Sahara into lush farmland. Robot (or rex) could probably utilize portal tech to create nearly limitless power by siphoning the energy from a distant star. The reality is that the people standing against that wouldn't be the normal "eggs." They would be those who enjoy power and benefit from the status quo today. Killing them wouldn't be productive either because you need to transition into the post-scarcity, post-heirarchy society. I think Rob seems like a cool guy and it's great hearing his take on these things but, he could probably benefit from slowing down a bit and thinking this stuff through more. He seems very smart and well-meaning. This just isn't the way.

@@MiguelPimentel001no, humanity was built by desire for status. That's why tribalism is a thing. People form communities around moral values. Humanity was in the dark ages before free markets. Nothing is perfect, but the idea of forcing everyone to share is about as dictatorial as it gets.

I hear you with the value of life, and I guess it’s ok cause we’re talking about comics, but in real life, all life does matter, say in Vegas they planed the solar panel job, they could’ve just evacuated the entire area and had no loses. See I served, I also grew up in what folks would call the hood, and when you see lost of life, in a truly violent way, and wasteful way, in the name of making things better, (WAR), in the name of making money, and supporting your family selling drugs, street life, And the hurt it creates, I doubt anyone would think less of the value of life. I think it’s easy for people to dismiss the value of life if they never seen the lost of life in the name of good..just saying got a little deep, lol

all fine sounding, but couldnt you have done just as much by glassing some desert next to vegas? why did the solar panels have to be sat on that particular spot of desert? vegas is morally funky but pointless massmurder is still pointless. without valuing human life you get to using bodies as resources, bad move. on the other hand considering life so sacred as to never be sacrificed you wind up with batman-joker, you dont value human life by letting your "fascist dictators" kill. respect for life is a social contract thing, if you can be ok with killing me youd be a hypocrite if you werent in turn ok with me killing you thus you dont want me to kill you so its only fair you agree the same for me. without such agreements humanity isnt above animals. not having a pop rob just making sure it gets said. you know what folk are like given half an excuse.

Nah, what is going between Batman and the Joker is just Bruce trying to stay relevant. One point I picked up from Injustice is the fact that Bruce could have helped keep Superman from going astray, especially when Superman was looking to him for support, but he ignored sups and even did thing that would push him over the edge just so he could be right in the end and still be relevant. He knows that if he had helped Superman, he would have ended up in the role of a side-kick, and he is too proud for that, so he hid it behind some moral jamboree. There are ways to make sure the joker stays put. Amputation for instance, or putting him in a vegetative state. He will still be alive, problem solved. But Batman knows that if that happens, he'll no longer have anyone to play with.

The logic totally checks out: if the benefit of a given action is greater than the sacrifice - then overall it would be a good thing. However, the issue is that Vegas didn’t need to be nuked with all of the citizens inside it. They could have evacuated the city just as easy and then glassed everything and the end result would probably be the same. Sure, some people would have to move, others wouldn’t be able to gamble - but the benefit would still be present. However, until one has made a violation befitting the stripping of their value as a living, sentient, being - sacrifice isn’t necessary. If I asked every commenter here to shoot a total stranger in the face for a confirmed $5,000,000, I’m sure some of them would. Who would pass up living in comfort for nearly their whole lives as the sacrifice of one person? This however doesn’t take into account he persona circumstances. What if told he they were a child? Pregnant? Poor and homeless? Perhaps even a multi-millionaire themselves. What if I gave them the chance to plead for their lives? What if they wouldn’t say a single word? What if I gave the gun to someone else and just gave you the go to shoot do not shoot? Why if it was your wife? Husband? What if instead of a load of cash it was to save the world as we knew it? There are too many factors involved to say, and in all these scenarios the value of the individual changes based on the perspective of the one pulling the trigger. I see them as a person, until I’m aware they’ve done some sort of unbelievably horrid - something they’ve done to make me perceive them as less than, or no longer human. Kinda like dictators, or those who have committed genocide. Aside from that? I probably wouldn’t pull the gun. The philosophy of the subject is exceedingly nuanced, and the conclusion jumped to in this video is one I’m assuming where said nuance had to be overlooked for the sake of keeping the video’s production and release. Regardless of that fact, Rob definitely would end up having me as an arch-nemesis in the future. I’d totally be going all Lex Luthor on him.
