Beautiful playing. I think Ry Cooder got some of this from Joseph Spence. If you haven’t checked him out you should. I can tell from the music you like you would love him. He’s a Bahamian guitarist I’ve heard referred to as the Rev. Gary Davis of the islands. Lol I didn’t watch far enough!

Hey David, your beginning blues guitar book really helped me a lot when I was first starting back in the late 90s. Glad to see your still at it..

I think there is a typo in the tab in bar 12: should be 0-6 instead of 0-8.

Wasn’t the dropped D down to C thing just what Joseph Spence did? I’ve wondered if it was to do with backing up singers in a church setting and keeping everything in C? Gives a marvellous low bass anyway.

Hey! What’s with the photo of the (Mitsubishi) Japanese ‘Zero’ on the title page? No Mustangs or Spitfires available? (Probably better than a Messerschmitt, though.) (Ha ha.)

Great playing and lesson. However, the title graphic should depict a B-17 bomber or a British Lancaster, not a damn Japanese Zero.

It’s a pity acoustic players don’t use flatwounds. I can’t bear string squeak.

Maybe Ry, having been a session guy who couldn't read music, was pretty nimble in picking up what was being played and finding sometimes unorthodox fretboard solutions.

Great lesson David. Not many examples of Ry style playing available, so thanks. The only one I can think of is Rick Payne. He has 2 courses on Ry. Chicken Skin and Chicken Skin Slide.

Great detective work and superb teaching….tab not necessary when the teaching is this good. I must say I struggled to identify the D G E11 A6 turnaround which sounds so good in Ry Cooder’s playing!

Ha! Thank you, high praise indeed :-). Glad to have solved any mysteries involved.

@@FretboardConfidential how about having a crack at Ry’s FDR in Trinidad? I think your approach to teaching is superb. Knee to knee and so unlabored compared to others! Five stars.
