Isn’t a sixth six notes up from a tone, not down? I’m confused by this
@FretboardConfidential
@FretboardConfidential 7 күн бұрын
You can reckon it either way: a note can be a sixth down from a particular pitch, or a sixth up. So, for example, starting on the note C, you could go up a sixth, to the note A. Or, you could go down a sixth, and wind up on the note E. A sixth is a distance, not a direction, which makes it kind of like a measurement: someone could be six inches taller than you, or six inches shorter. Up or down, you're still talking about the same thing, a difference of six inches.

@@FretboardConfidential OK, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying
@danedwards3738

But in this case, it's a sixth up (B to G# for instance) I think, not down as stated.

Thanks for answering that most urgent and important question. I have THREE Epiphone Casino Coupes. Love their light weight and the fact they can be played acoustically. But you’re right about the look of the mini-humbuckers, I even looked into replacing the P90’s but it’d be a long haul for a short gain.

These are great, thanks! Where I want to get, the gap you mentioned....wow. I'm way too scattered, so much great music out there, I have trouble focusing. I'm trying to narrow down to fingerstyle blues, like Gary Davis, Jorma Kaukonen, Mississippi John Hurt, but then I listen to Kottke, or John Fahey, or some of the electric stuff, Michael Bloomfield, Muddy, SRV, etc. So I watch too many online channels, I buy instruction and song books, and wind up not spending the time with a guitar in my hand putting in the work. That's why I haven't committed to the Fingerstyle Five, because I know it would be wasted on me if I didn't really dedicate the time to it. Excuses....

Love the nuanced insights David! Regarding "mistakes"...I recall Miles Davis apparently said "It's not the note you play that's the wrong not, it's the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong." With the Blues improv - if you are paying attention - it's not so hard to move chromatically from a "wrong note" , back to where you need to be.

At the end of this most edifying lesson, you asked participants to let you know what their perceptions of "being good" might be. I'm in my mid 70's and started playing about a year and a half ago, with virtually zero knowledge of music. I have spent a lifetime learning "stuff" in general (mainly science) and music was for a long time on the "to do" list and it's time has finally come. I started by trying to absorb what I could about rudimentary theory (keys, scales, triads, etc.).... remarkable stuff for the uninitiated. Then moved on to the practical matter of actually playing. Looking at the possibilities (for acoustic guitar), I settled on trying to learn to play with my fingers. I happened on Travis picking and plugged away at that until I could make a reasonable pass at three tunes: Dust in the Wind, Landslide and the Boxer. Pretty satisfying, but then I came across Tommy Emmanuel and David Hamburger talking about something called "Fingerstyle", as opposed to "finger-picking patterns". Aha...now this seemed quite an exciting concept compared to Travis picking!! Thumb independance?!...let's give it a run! In that regard I learned to play Elizabeth Cotton's Freight Train, and Lindsay Buckingham's Never Going Back Again. Not so easy as the other three, but I can make a pretty good pass at both of them after some months of daily work. It still doesn't seem like thumb independence the way you talk about it, but a little step in that direction maybe. I am telling you something of my journey here simply to demonstrate that "getting good" is a moving target at my level. The more "possibilities" I'm exposed to, the more I know what aiming a sensible amount higher might look like. The repertoire you seem to specialize in (the traditional blues tunes you teach ) appeals greatly to me and I'm excited to study how this music morphed into rock and pop..... a real revelation for someone who only first heard the term 12 bar blues about a year ago! This three part class in deconstructing How Long Blues has really whet my appetite for more of your method of teaching. You're right when you say there are lots of online resources / teachers out there and some do indeed have good stuff to offer. On balance though, for me, you're way at the top of my list....It seems to me your process is really well thought out and of course your skills are jaw dropping (and you seem like a nice, good intentioned, no B.S. person...which ain't nuthin', as the saying goes..: )). No doubt there will be some students who will reply to your question saying "getting good" means playing with the ease and command of the instrument you have, as well as your knowledge and comprehension of music theory. I however, understand very well that the adage that the acquisition of any complex skill is an undertaking entailing 10,000 hours of work. I'm pretty sure that acquiring an appreciable skill in music, would fall into that category. You surely have put in your 10,000 hours!! For my part I am too old to make it to 10,000 hours and will content myself with the joys of each little incremental amount of knowledge and skill I develop from my daily practice and playing. "Getting good" for me will have to be setting attainable but moving goals and appreciating whatever "getting a little better" results from having attained those goals. BTW I intend to join the FS5...I have for some time felt a bit guilty using your stuff on youtube, without somehow compensating you for all your hard work to help people like me learn. I hope I'm not out of my league when I join!

Thanks for an enlightening lesson David, especially the concept of isolating the bass and melody to learn separately before merging them together as a whole. As a newer player, it's beneficial both now and in the future, and I think it will help me to the other side of the current intermediate plateau I'm slogging through. As for what I consider good on guitar, for myself, it's being able to express myself, and my life, in an authentic way that also resonates with others.
