I love that. I’m going to tune one of my guitars and open C just because of this video.

You asked if I enjoyed watching this as a recording. ABSOLUTELY. Especially your answer to Delphine’s question. So perfect. I can’t believe I can understand this. Your teaching is incredible.

Is Grant Green playing 2 different modes, as you described it?

Very nice. I've got to ask, what is that cool guitar? It's like an ES-339-shaped ES-330.
@FretboardConfidential4 күн бұрын
Exactly! It's an ES-390, which is smaller, like a 339, and hollow, like a 330.

Such a clear presentation. Thanks. Also, can you the year, model, etc. of the guitar your using.
@FretboardConfidential8 күн бұрын
Thanks! It’s a 2015-ish ES-390: hollow (no center block) and mini humbuckers. So, smaller, like a 339, but hollow, like a 330.
@offidano95878 күн бұрын
@@FretboardConfidential I expected that. My old shoulders are not fans of guitars with big bouts. Not a problem if your standing, but disastrous if your sitting, particularly on anything soft and cushy. I wish that they would make something similar and just a tiny bit smaller.
@iogeek608 күн бұрын
David, I totally respect you as a player and teacher, but given all those guitar cases in the background, surely you could pull out an acoustic archtop that pays more accurate tribute to the great Freddie Green and the sound he actually got.
@FretboardConfidential4 күн бұрын
Believe it or not, this is about as accurate as it gets :-). I had a 1990s Epiphone with a floating pickup for a while, but it fed back anytime I used it live and the 17" bout was really not my jam. So this semihollow Gibson is my go-to now.

In the mid ‘70’s Count Basie and his orchestra played at my college. I will never forget standing on the left side of the bandstand, watching this guitar player changing chord shapes on virtually every beat. As a rock and blues player, this just blew my mind. I didn’t know who he was, at the time, but I would, soon enough. The great Freddie Green. What an unforgettable memory.

Why is the 5th string skipped?
@FretboardConfidential4 күн бұрын
Probably because things would get kind of muddy sounding. There's also this idea in classical harmony where the lower the register, the more space you leave between the voices. I think it has something to do with the overtone series, but I'm fuzzy on the details. It amounts to the same idea, though - you leave out the fifth string for the clarity of the sound.

Really dig your playing, David, and I'm close to diving into your program. But I've 40 years of rough finger pattern picking and the devil is melting my brain when I try for independent thumb and finger style. Standard Travis patterns are fine, but chord melody (Blues style!) leaves my thumb flailing and stalled. Argg... Very frustrating. How to break out of patterns?? Does your fingerstyle five have tips for an old hand / brain with bad habits? Or will I just die in trying to un-train the brain? Cheers - great videos.
@brucebyrnes12516 күн бұрын
David’s membership will definitely allow you to break through and learn the new independence. He breaks it down step by step
@huwperry864113 күн бұрын
Agree with this reply. Just dived in with David recently and my brain getting fried - but in a good way! In the membership area everything is broken down with tabs and practice material to help those pesky fingers and thumb to work better in co- ordination. Sure I will get better with the obvious practice needed. Good luck!
