Though a relatively simple and straight forward conservation, the results on this lovely painting of peonies truly exemplifies the effect the right kind of treatment can have on a painting. From dull and lifeless to vibrant and electric, this painting, and the flowers are now coming into bloom.

one thing I particularly love about your videos is that you don't assume knowledge on our part or familiarity with your previous works; a lot of creators in various fields make videos that are nigh incomprehensible to a new viewer, but each of your works stands on its own, and your conversational tone means even familiar steps found in other videos feel fresh and interesting each time

having done similar with screws (just a plastic container though), it still takes a lot of tracking down to collect the damnable things. Then a week later you find more, hopefully not by stepping, or sitting on them. The brass tacks were fortunately done on the workbench and just swept into a drawer.

I wonder if he stores the tacks in glass for a specific reason? The look of the jars is a nice mood, but glass shards and delicate art don't mix well. There is a lot to be said for storing things in tins with lids that latch well. :)

The flowers are gorgeous, but what stunned me the most in the before/after reveal is THE FREAKING VASE. It went from a vague dark shape with a few tiny highlights to a polished gold vessel that hits just the right balance of luxurious and understated--it doesn't overshadow the flowers in the slightest, but it complements their showiness beautifully. :D

Hello, Would you consider doing a video like "A week in my studio"? The reason I'm asking that is because we see you doing one painting at the time during your videos. From A to Z But, in reality, for example after the hot table treatment I don't think that you just sit and wait for the acclimation is done to keep working. You probably go to another project, refurnish your supplies, clean everything, do the paperwork needed, respond to potential clients.... So one video in the type of "Spend a week with me" could allow us to have a better grasp on your day to day professional life. I mean I guess you have to do some mental gymnastic between working a painting A, then on a painting B ... I would love to hear you talk about this aspect of your work. And I also think that there so much more work that is not directly in contact with a painting that you do but mandatory that I would love to just have a taste of. For exemple also I would love to hear about how you do an estimate on renovating a painting. But i won't ask for that since in my eyes this is very "personnal" and we as the public don't need to know how much exactly it cost for a painting to go through your hands and expertise

It gives me some solace to see someone I respect greatly also fall prey to the temptation to avoid the trip back to the cupboard to get the rest of the items required, by carrying absolutely everything balanced precariously all in one go and then that moment when you remember why you promised yourself you wouldn't ever do that again - and the half hour or hour spent making up for wanting to save time at the beginning - we are all apparently very human 😊 Also - I just loved this beautiful painting.

Watching you begin to remove the varnish on the center-right pale pink peony made me surprisingly catch my breath. I'm mid 60's and I can tell you that's a rare occurrence. The most revealing episode of the whole story, after years of watching Julian perform such meticulous work that would make a Japanese man sweat, I always wondered how he would react when things go wrong, as he is seen as a very serene and patient person. That small and almost insignificant glass jar brought us the most authentic reaction. I never expected to hear a slur, but neither did that phrase. AWESOME.

I've been binge watching old Antiques Roadshow episodes from UK. Three months ago I knew nothing about paintings. Now when they show dark, dingy museum paintings I actually say out loud "Somebody call Julian!" When they show a conservator working on a painting I know what is happening at each step and recognize when they are doing it like you would. It feels good to learn so much in 3 months.
