As for advice: • use inclusive language (instead of "ladies and gentlemen" maybe "honored guests"). Send e-mails to restaurants and other places that still only have men's and women's restrooms. Etc, there are loads of things you can do! Google is your friend! • ask the non-binary person if they have energy to talk about it BEFORE you ask a question. Our first priority is not to educate; our first priority is to exist. Be respectful:) • Don't assume other people's gender and/or pronouns. Make it a habit to include your pronoun when you introduce yourself with your name. That creates a safer space for non-binary people and lets us know that an ally is present. • and as Hope is saying: don't be afraid to screw up! But when/if you do screw up, don't get defensive when someone corrects you. Lingering on the subject (by apologizing a dozen times/shifting the focus to yourself by saying "oh I didn't know" etc) is just annoying, uncomfortable and unhelpful. So do: say "sorry" and correct yourself and just continue with the conversation. • as a trans and/or non-binary person you actually don't have to hold back if you encounter someone that misgenders you if you get angry/sad/other. Even if it was by accident. You're allowed to feel all of those things. And sometimes that might help show people how important the right pronoun is for you. Never be ashamed of/hide your feelings❤
@maggieo16834 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I've been looking for advice on how to be a good trans ally. It drives me crazy at my job because we're supposed to address people as ma'am or sir, and I don't want to because I don't want to misgender anyone. I'm trying to catch myself also when I talk about customers, because a lot of the time I accidentally say "she did this" or "he did that." Instead I'm trying to say "that person..." or say they. Anyway thanks again for the tips, I don't know a non binary individual personally at the moment, but if I meet one I want to be the best ally I can.

When I was in school a few weeks ago, we were going to do a digital test and we had to say what gender we were. When I saw "He/him", "She/her" and "They/them" options I just felt uncomfortable with clicking on "she/her" (which I thought I were because I was born with feminine body parts) so I just sat there. Then the teacher came and clicked on "she/her" for me. I got a little offended and confused, so when he walked away I clicked back a step and clicked on "They/them" instead. It just felt so much better after that. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Of course not. Presentation regarding clothes, makeup, hair style etc. has nothing to do with someone's sexual orientation and/or gender identity. For example, I am a very gay girl and I prefer to dress femme, even though the stereotype is I should present as masculine and wear plaid every day. But that's just not my style. I don't feel myself in men's clothing. But I'm not against women or any person of any sexuality or gender who do feel comfortable presenting masculine. How you choose to present yourself and queer identities are two completely different topics. So dress however you want and be proud of your identity!

I got miss gendered this morning by a 5 year old and all three adults were right there to correct him and it got me thinking, why they were so quick to jump in like first he is 5, second why does it matter that he said he/him instead of she/her I wasn’t bothered by it. It just goes to show that society already have these judgments on what a girl is and what a boy is which I think is so weird
@alexandraclapham44274 жыл бұрын
Well that’s not how most people think when it comes to their own gender identity , what you should take from that is how easy it is to correct someone , and how that 5 year old will grow up being polite about people’s emotions and state of being. If there was a cis girl that looked very manly , parents will scold them and tell them that she is a SHE , that goes the same for trans people/non binary people . Kids accept more than we think

So my native language also doesn't have that option. if you can't just ask the the person what pronouns they use in that language I guess you can just mix it up. Like be aware that the person doesn't fit into either catorgy and just use what rolls from your tounge. Maybe LGBT communities also tried to make pronouns themself for portougese but those usally dont establish themselves. Another thing I do can be used in languages where all words have a grammatical "gender". I just use the gender the word "person" or "human" for example has. I don't know if it works that way with your language. I also thought about just using "they" because I use a lot of englisch words anyway while talking my native language. I hope I could help I have no clue what those other comments say so apologies If they had better answers.

i get it so much. At first, i started asking people not to refer to me as women and progressively got the confidence to ask people to change my pronouns

I’m so confused rn because I can’t decide whether I’m she/her or they/them or both and it’s so frustrating. Also because im young I feel like people won’t believe me

Try not to find a label, just be you and if you dont feel comfortable with she, then they/them is your best option. There's no rush. Take your time! :)

Maybe go by both for a while and see how you feel? I know it works for some people! And maybe you don't have to have a strong pronoun preference? Whatever pronouns make you comfy :)

Hello my fellow non straight Cincinnatians!! I’m Nik (or Niki - either way) and my have really zero idea how I found your channel, Georgia. I was watching a video on women’s soccer. Then your video popped up. But, what a wonderful happy accident that y’all just tumbled into my night. So Georgia, you are a riot, smart, and such a doll, and your puppy Summer is a doggie doll. And Now I met Hope and being adorable just runs in your family. So, I am totally learning about the gender fluidity concepts b/c I am sure I I’ve been fluid for all time. I just want to tell you I’m so proud of you and Georgia for living truthfully and being so brave to be yourself without apologizing., If either of you ever need to be adopted, my wife and I are not at all serial killers (although I am slightly obsessed with true crime, but only because I like to solve puzzles and not at all because I want to murder people). - and we are also very fun, funny, witty, creative and supportive folk. But for real, if either of you ever need a big gay parent-like friend, don’t be a stranger.

This is really cool for both of you to share. When I was new to the LGBT scene, I misgendered a new friend accidentally at first. I had never met gay, trans or non-binary people before that! So many new terms to learn. As a non-native English speaker, "they/them" really confused me. I thought it was only used as plural! I was immediately excluded from the friend group, even though I was genuinely trying. I lost beautiful friendships and they lost someone who cared and could've been very supportive, if only given a bit more room for error. Having experienced the opposite, I am grateful to you, Hope. You are incredibly wise and kind to be so understanding of people's mistakes. I know it must be difficult to be patient with other people when it's about something as huge as YOUR IDENTITY. But thanks for acknowledging those around you that try. And for knowing the right people will get there eventually. You're a great role model for younger NB and trans people trying to navigate this world. I have a justice degree now and from a psychology standpoint, your patience and understanding of others is the most successful way to change people's behaviour or use of words. Only love can breed love. :)

English language is much kinder to non-binary people. For example, I can't think of a word as "child" to replace "daughter" in Spanish. We had to kind of create a new way of talking using the letter e instead of others to change words but because is something new is very hard for people to get used to it, specially for older people (like my dad)

in Spanish for Kid you would just say hijo, I know we have the version of hija for a girl but for instance if you talk about both you use hijos and so I think that is the best solution, remember there is also Ellos y Ellas! Hope this helps

Try googling it, I’ve seen new non-binary language being created for spanish, at least for pronouns. I think I somewhat agree with you, but also not a lot of English speakers use gender neutral language on a regular basis with the exception of when someone doesn’t know someone’s gender (like if you can’t see them) because of the gender construct(s) and stereotypes engrained in everyone’s minds. But yeah, I agree. It’s super difficult with Spanish because the masculine form is also the “gender neutral” term.

a small thing: maybe instead of saying "gender identity" just say gender? and like instead of "they identify as x", say "they are x"

I love this video so much. My fav sibling duo on the internet. I’m so proud of both of you as time goes by and you both become more comfortable with yourselves. I think those of us that have been following you a long time have seen Hope as our baby sister too! I had never even thought about how terms like sister, aunt, mother, etc can be harmful / uncomfy. I vote that Hope just makes her future children call her ‘Captain’ to assert dominance 😅♥️ love you both!!
