Rare Silents and Talkies

In this romance, a lovely young debutante falls in love with a jazz violinist. Her mother wants her to marry a wealthy young man, but the strong-willed girl initially demurs until the night of her debut. Her social adviser fills the debutante’s dance card with partners, which inflames the violinist.

Frances Dee was married to Joel McCrea when this movie came out. They were married for 57 years when he died. Gorgeous & happy couple.

The reason I love pre-code movies: more honesty, deeper stories mixed in with message. Sometime the good guys and the bad guys aren't as well defined. Class distinctions means different rules, different friends. Someone is given a reputation if they aren't in the top class. Someone has a protected reputation if born right. I get so tired of the movies because we know what will happen, the tale has been told so much. The bad guy can't win, the poor girl turned wife who has a child can't leave (without leaving her child with them). In this film, we see that both sides come with complications, expectations, and no way to turn except inside. She suffers in silence, does the best as she can while waiting to see who she ends up with because it's clear that's not her choice. Our heroine was not treated well by any of her men in my opinion. Both deputante and struggling artist say they never intended to fall so deeply in love. I guess they knew ahead of time their choices would be hard. Thank you for the movie, really engaging. I'll watch it again.

Thanks for sharing this movie. Seeing Nigel Bruce in an uncharacteristic role is a treat. Alison Skipworth, Jessie Ralph and Harry Green is an added bonus.

No disrespect intended: This film was made during a global depression, Jim Crow flourished in the southern US and Hitler was appointed Chancellor in Germany. Just a few of the occurrences in that “wonderful past”. Nostalgia is a mental trap that is mostly untrue. Looking back is counterproductive to a happy life in the here and now.

Interesting....and here all along, I thought I was pretty smart. Well...this film pre-dates the concept of the notion of reality. Thank you for sharing.

I didn't think dial telephones go back as far as the early 30s. There are some films from 1940 that I've found on the Internet where Bell Telephone representatives explain how to use their (presumably) newly introduced dial telephones.

There is a control in the bottom left of the viewing screen area. Set that at the maximum. There is a second control in the bottom right of the full viewing screen . Use that to adjust to your liking.

This is the silliest movie that I've ever seen. No woman would run off and marry a man that she didn't love on a whim like that. I never would, and neither would my grandmothers have done such a thing, and they were the same age as the young people depicted here. We come from privileged backgrounds, made our debuts, etc.-----but we had emotional strength, and would never have conducted ourselves like these pitiful characters.

With Frances Dee, gene Raymond.,Alison skipworth and Nigel Bruce- a lonely young debutante falls in love with a jazz violinist,her mother wants her to marry a wealthy man,but the strong-willed girl demurs until the night of her debut! Her social adviser fills her dance card with partners which enrages the violinist!! I was surprised to see Nigel Bruce-Dr Watson in the Sherlock Holmes movies 🍿 without a moustache! Gene Raymond was in the musical 🎵 going to rio with Fred Astaire and ginger rogers- which was their debut in as a duo! The flick was good 👍!

Did Frances Dee marry Joel McCrea?
@raresilentsandtalkies
@raresilentsandtalkies Жыл бұрын
She did! On October 20, 1933. They were happily married for more than 50 years, until Joel's death in 1990. He died on October 20, 1990 aged 84, on the exact day of their wedding anniversary (it would be their 57th year together). Ms. Dee passed away in 2004 at age 94.

The McCreas owned a ranch and raised cattle. So Joel truly was a cowboy. And Frances did her share of hard work on the ranch and raised a few children as well.
