You know, I don’t even play the bagpipes, but I love your wealth of musical knowledge and have actually applied a lot of your exercises to my instrument (bass clarinet) and have improved on my finger speed and articulation!!

Great video. Never thought about warming up as 30% of practice session so this will help structure my time better.

Very interesting I've been using this technique for quite some time with my pupils, First BEFORE they learn the real notes as a way of getting used to the finger going to the hole. Once they've learnt the scale I ALWAYS do this type of scale as a ......"warm up" ! ! ! What you describe is an upgrade on my Idea ... so my vict...er... pupils are in for a surpirse ! ! !
@MattWillisBagpiper5 жыл бұрын
I started doing this with my new students for about 3 months (again, before they even learn the scale)... It took me a bit to think of how to notate it. There may be a better way, but this was what I came up with. Cheers!

@@MattWillisBagpiper I think it's a pretty cool notation, and very clear. it even sort of indicates the direction of the finger "up"

@@MattWillisBagpiper I'm so glad you use this sort of "initiation" to the chanter prior to the scale. I was kinda fearful I was going to be too unorthodox. . Specially as all my pupils are adults there's little room to correct ingrained mistakes.

33 out of 36 students of mine are adults, so I totally understand. The traditional ways of learning the pipes work to a degree, but, as a community, we're awfully slow to accept new and better ways of learning...

@@MattWillisBagpiper Suggestions about this warm-up: - Do it on the pipes, you'll notice a huge difference in difficulty - listen to how "horrible" they sound (on the pipes), it helps to train your ear.

My high A sounds like a broken siren. It does happen when I play regular tunes too. What is the cause of this weird squeeze noice on high A? especially when I tap my left thumb on the back of chanter, the pitch get totally off. I wish I can show you the recording of my situation. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks!

Matt, my fiance is interested in one of those gadgets they use to help your breathing. I can't remember what they called it or even if they still make it.

Do you circular breathe when you do this? I just don't seem to have the wind to get through this exercise without stopping to catch a breath. Of course, I can't get the hang of the whole circular breathing thing either. So..... Hmm! I'll keep at it
@MattWillisBagpiper5 жыл бұрын
I take at least two breaths while playing this... never did learn to circular breathe.
@TheGameStorePiper5 жыл бұрын
@@MattWillisBagpiper I learned to do it fairly quickly... I tell people, if they want to try it, to get a fairly big mouthful of water and then breathe calmly through the nose a couple of times. Then, once they're comfortable, try spitting a steady stream of water (with enough force to not look like a slob, haha) using only their cheeks while inhaling through the nose. A few cups later, you're circular breathing, boom!

I'll give that a try!
