Commander Clash 22: Old School '03

We're continuing our romp through Magic's history, building decks with cards that were printed in a specific time period. This time we're doing Urza block up to and including Onslaught block. Here's what we've got:
Seth takes to the skies with a Tribal Birds deck led by Kangee, Aerie Keeper.
Richard stomps face with huge trampling monstrosities buffed by Kamahl, Fist of Krosa.
Jake draws tons of cards in a Tribal Wizard deck with the help of Arcanis the Omnipotent.
Tomer runs a hybrid of Reanimate and Voltron with Volrath the Fallen.

what I don't get is how come you guys never play as though the bug didn't happen? like act as if he doesn't have 3 tokens instead of jut swinging away with things that shouldn't exist :(

The Tomer misplay are driving me crazy. "Just cast No Mercy, while no one has counterspells." "Cast something off the rituals in your hand while you are over maximum hand size. For instance, no mercy or Phage."

31:30 and I'm tuning out. For fucks sake, its always Tomer getting shafted. He either goes as hard as he can and wins, or tries to have fun and interesting decks and gets screwed over completely.

Super late comment on a 2024 rewatch but I wanted to bring attention to the card Vendetta took Tomer out as he killed Richard’s Silklash Spider out of spite. That’s so fitting!

I love watching this series, I think the best thing is the spirit you play in, I know Jake occasionally gets a bit salty, but even that seems to be taken in jest. Never played commander nor have the desire to btw.

Games that are decided almost entirely due to bugs shouldn't be posted in my opinion. And while Seth (I believe) commented earlier that fixing the game state after a glitched bounce spell was difficult due to ETB effects and morphs, it's easy enough to pretend that bounced tokens don't exist. I was certain that Richard would offer to pretend the saproling tokens were not there and was pretty surprised - and irritated - when he instead used them to attack for lethal. I think it would have been a much better idea to redo the game.

Tomer, when you used Balthor, you got back Devouring Strossus, who can sacrifice a creature to regenerate itself at instant speed. You could have saved yourself from the second round of Ascendant Evincar land death.

That was intentional, actually! My reasoning was that Evincar would lead to more land death, but no Evincar meant Richard could go wide with animated lands and kill me that turn.

It's a hard situation, because it's not like my morph would be dead, just bounced. If it was an effect that killed the creatures, it would be easy enough to pretend they weren't there (although it would still mess up reanimation, etc), but bouncing is a lot trickier.

Especially if bugs happen early in the game, it's very hard to simulate and remember the changed board state. It's usually better to just accept whatever the program spits out.

It's more that he continued to play with the tokens and killed with overrun, that was a really dick move.

It's hard with a bounce effect. If the creatures were just dead, it would be fairly easy to pretend they were not there, but it's more more difficult with bounce.

Yeah, it's not so much remembering, but more that it changes the entire game with things like enters the battlefield abilities (or even the morph, would be unable to replay it face up, for example).

It's a Magic Online shortcut. We tap out our lands and press F8 to skip over everyone's turn, otherwise Magic Online will ask if you want to respond to every action.
