Old School Commander EDH | Magic the Gathering |

Enjoy an episode of old school Magic the Gathering commander. In this Timmy Talks special four brave magicians chose an OS commander and started brewing. Casper created a green, red and black deck build around Adun Oakenshield that will enable him to keep bringing back the dead. Gideon went with Rubina Soulsinger as his commander to built a green, white and blue deck with the capability to steal every creature on the board. Frank went Pirate crazy and selected the charismatic Ramirez DePietro to lead his blue and black pirate deck. I went for a green and red commander, picking Sunastian Falconer, creating a deck revolving around small synergies filled with tricks, big and small.

Stunning decks. Very Nostalgic. Back in the day, these are the kinds of decks my playgroup used to play. That's all the cards that existed and not many people had multiples of the same cards, so it was effectively singleton. No commanders obviously, but the cards used are right on the mark. :) Great Vid, Timmy! Moar pls!

With War Barge and a ton of mana, you can use Obelisk of Undoing. Bounce War Barge for repeatability. In the Adun Oakenshield deck, use Sengir Vampire in the Arena along with Sorceress Queen. The Queen makes whatever the Vampire fights smaller while feeding +1/+1 counters to the Vampire. I like the synergy part of your deck-tech. Your package of point cards is what I consider the ideally best set with the values being what they are.

I loved this video! My two favorite formats are Old School and Commander, so Old School Commander is definitely the best of two worlds for me. I recently finished my first OSEDH deck, it started out with Xira Arien as the commander (Xira is such a good commander in this format, it's sort of like starting with a cheaper, recurrable Jayemdae Tome in your hand) but in the end I decided that I wanted to stay true to the "original spirit of the Elder Dragon Highlander format" so I got myself a Vaevictis Asmadi to spearhead the deck instead :}

As a Commander/EDH player, I like seeing people being able to include Balance. It's a card I think that needs to be unbanned in the format anyway. It would, well, help balance out the colors and help make white a more viable color.

Balance in commander seems great. You can get back from behind and usually another player at the table is also happy with the spell. So it doesn’t seem overpowered to me.

Ali from Cairo wasn’t banned for being too powerful. He was banned because at the time WOTC’s philosophy was that they didn’t want people to HAVE to include any particular thing, like creature removal for instance. They wanted deck building to be very freeform, and to have to auto include creature removal went against that ideal. After a little while they realized that everyone was playing creature removal and Ali wasn’t really problematic. Nizzahon Magic has a series about the history of the Banned and Restricted list. Old School players should check out at least the first three episodes. Great insight to what was happening in the world of Magic in those early years. (sorry for plugging another youtuber, but I believe his content is relevant)

Thanks for the info Daniel, I’m familiar with his channel, he makes great content 👍 I know that side of the coin btw, but at least when I started playing Ali was still considered to be very powerful. As a matter of fact, AN was seen as a set with some of the most powerful cards. Reason of this was probably because of the scarcity. It was really dif to get your hands on AN.

😂 the main reason is that I don't have an unl Living Lands at the moment (trying to keep the sets ABU and 4 horsemen). But a great suggestion! I am tempted to brew a mono green commander deck now!

In your opinion how many old school commanders are considered “viable” in OS format ?

Do you mean in normal one on one play? I’ve seen Xira and Rubina work pretty good in os decks. Tetsuo is also surprisingly useful (a 3/3 for 3 with upside).

There are like about 70 legends from Legends, obviously all of the 3-colored Legends are a little better but it seems like there might be room to consider some of the 2-color cards as well. At least 20/77: Arcades, Rubinia, Tim, ? Chromium, Lady Evangela, Halfdane, Dakkon Blackblade Nicol Bolas, Tetsuo, Gwendolyn di Corci, Sol'Kanar Vaevictis Asmadi, Adun Oakenshield, Xira Arien, Bartel Runeaxe Palladia-Mors, Johan, Hazezon Tamar, ? Tobias Andrion and Ramses Overdark are both part-blue which of course must be mentioned. In OS black has Demonic Tutor and red has Wheel of Fortune so I believe Green is the odd color out with the weakest card draw.

Ramirez Pietro is probably ok and Hunding Gunnarson. They would by my guess be the lowest tier of playable though because "are blue" is all they have going for them compared to the power of Dragons.
