that moment after Hanson signed off was really powerful...Riker really understood the cost it took for him to gain the rank of captain. Jean-Luc, his friend, was the price at the time he thought he paid and that was a really well written scene!

I can't fault the Admiral here, though Picard was such an outstanding officer. You'd have to proceed as though he was gone to protect the Federation. If you can, you try to get him back, but one man's life versus countless trillions isn't even a question. Picard himself would've said so, I think.

While a valiant effort was made at Wolf 359, what Admiral Hanson should've done was completely scrap the original tactics the moment he learned Jean-Luc Picard had been assimilated by the Borg. What was proven to be the more effective approach was improvisation in later encounters with the Borg. Tactics Locutus wouldn't have been able to exploit. The Battle of Wolf 359 should've been a bigger wake up call to the Federation that peace can't be maintained by itself. One thing that should've taken place was the reinstatement of the MACOs. Starfleet marines trained to fight. I know that MACO units weren't introduced until ENTERPRISE, but still. Imagine what sort of things could've happened in TNG and DS9 if the marines were there when trouble arose. An interesting thought.

Honestly, While Gene's vision is a nice dream, One of it's flaws is that It ISN'T REALISTIC I mean, ANYONE who thinks that everyone in the galaxy would be interested in peace are just lying to themselves. You should always, ALWAYS assume that every person you meet out there is hostile until proven otherwise. Airing on the side of caution. The Federation was shown what happens when you DON'T do that, MULTIPLE TIMES, and they Never, EVER seem to learn their lesson. I highly, HIGHLY doubt that anyone woulda minded if Starfleet had a fleet of warships purely for defense. Also, Another thing to note is that Violence might actually be better. I'm looking at you Battle of the Binary Stars and the Federation flat out ignoring what worked for the Klingons in the past. Honestly if I was Micheal I woulda been frustrated too. If it worked before, There was absolutely NOTHING wrong with trying it again.

The Introduction of the board was literally the beginning of the end for Star Trek. Because from that point on, it was no longer about exploration and being the best of humanity. it started being about warfare. Essen So that people like you could come on KZbin and talk about things like how peace is impossible without warriors and blah blah blah. And generally it repulses me because 30 years later, look at Star Trek. It’s completely lost its way, and become nothing but explosions and cursing and stupidity. Pretty much no trekking of any kind in a series with Trek in its name.

@@jeremydale4548 why would a post needs society think about peace? It’s not like all their needs are being met. It’s not like they have technology where food and material pretty much Popson from thin air. And even 100 years earlier it’s not like they had technology to essentially meet the needs of everyone around them. It’s not like pretty much every spacefaring society had that ability. Let’s get one thing straight here. Klingons and Romulans and Borg were created as a dramatic foil for the main characters. Because ultimately they needed some obstacle to overcome. That’s the whole point of the heroes journey. And even that was done as a ratings booster to get people interested enough to keep watching so that the real message could be conveyed. And unfortunately, it worked. A lot of uneducated people started watching and didn’t learn any lesson. And then those uneducated people had uneducated kids who don’t actually get the whole point of Star Trek. It’s stupid to think that any society, capable of faster than like travel would immediately be hostel. Especially because our galaxy has 100 billion stars. literally pretty much infinite resources and enough for everybody. It bothers me that people come on KZbin, and other platforms, thinking that war is the only way. When even on this planet, at any given moment, 99% of the world is essentially getting along without war. Even during World War II, only about one .4% of the world was actually at war.

Ultimately I'm not sure there is time to meaningfully design a new strategy in the time available before the Borg reach Earth. The fleet eventually engages the borg at almost the last moment, only a handful of light years from Earth. Hansen's only play is to throw pretty much everything he can scrape up at the Borg and he knows it. Picard's tactical insights are ones engineered into the very design of Federation Starships. With months, maybe they could do something, maybe weeks given the magical powers of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, but he has days. Naval strategy is built strategy.

Though 40 Starships is a big number, the starships that were in the battle were old, outgunned, understaffed, and out manned. And most of them weren’t combat ships, and definitely not ready for fighting the borg. The most worthy most likely was the USS Yamaguchi Ambassador class. Past that these ships were probably weaker than a California class.
@patrickwilkinson7351
@patrickwilkinson7351 Жыл бұрын
Don't forget the USS Bellerophon, the Nebula class starship that engaged the Borg Cuba alongside the Yamaguchi. And reportedly, Hanson's flagship was supposed to be a Galaxy class like the Enterprise-D. It was referenced as a Galaxy class in the production notes, and the his last recording was taken on the battle bridge set.
@oldtwinsna8347

Worst yet, they likely were not battle ready based upon the shakeup we saw even much later with Captain Jellico. If the flagship crew was soft and unprepared for the rigors of battle, I can't help but think what status they were like in less prestigious crews aboard less capable ships. Essentially on par with Ferengi's I'd argue.

But from how cobbled together and rushed the fleet was in this engagement it was most likely a mix of TMP era and very early TNG ships. Because what’s better for defending the Interests of the United Federation than an aging fleet. (No wonder why the Romulans were a threat)

After Picard was rescued from the Borg and was no longer acting as Locutus, Captain Riker rightfully refused to relinquish the command of the Enterprise that was granted to him by the Admiral and accept a demotion back to commander. His determination was now strengthened by his tactical genius during his battle with Locutus and the borg cube along with his acceptance of the new rank and belief in himself he got from counselling sessions and many words of encouragement from the wise and ancient alien known as Guinan. As there could not be 2 Captains of the Enterprise he knew a fight to the death was inevitable, so he trained with Warf in the holodeck while Picard recovered from his assimilation. Eventually he defeated Picard in honorable combat with a Bat'leth. He held his command after this promotion and is still Captain to this day.

Yes the ship he was to command "Melbourne' was destroyed, and Starfleet didn't know if they were going to get Picard back from the Borg. When the fleet was getting rebuilt, Riker's rank should've made him the clear choice to command any ship in the fleet, as he saved Earth. He was likely offered some kind of command to retain his rank, but it may not have been to his liking. Perhaps not even a ship, it may have been a space or ground station command. It was already established in the episode, and earlier, that Riker was no longer interested in fast tracking upwards. So he would just have declined the opportunity easily without feeling any regret.

As a retired military member who has seen promotions that usually are achieved every 3 - 4 years, that's the problem with a series like Star Trek. Riker would've been promoted twice during the series, and Picard would've been promoted at the least by the end of the series; pending an upward position was available. As they are in a universe, where positions are plentiful, and pay doesn't exist, so that's not an issue, only Picard's checkered past could affect his promotion. Promoting the characters in a series, is possibly letting go of certain cast members. Such as Sulu flying off in the Excelsior at the end of 'The Undiscovered Country', and Chekov serving on the Reliant in 'The Wrath of Khan'. Just look at all the personnel who didn't get promoted on Voyager, despite all of the death on that ship.@@oldtwinsna8347

@@EvilTheOne To be fair, in Voyager's case, after the initial trip to the Delta Quadrant, there wasn't much in the way of death for the senior staff, and that's who we watched 95% of the time. We do see some minor recurring characters over the years, but we don't know how many of them were still at the rank they held before being stranded, and who got a field promotion to replace someone who got killed. We know that Voyager's engineering section got hit bad becuase they lost the chief, but how many others did they lose? You would think if any of the chief's senior assistants survived, they'd be the first in line to replace the chief instead of Torres.

@@patrickwilkinson7351 Fully understand and agree with your comments. As my 39+ years history of being in the 'real world' military, promoting Ensign Harry Kim to lieutenant is a given. All officers have a certain rank they can attain by completing schooling and requisites. Attaining rank over O-4/O-5 becomes a little more problematic, as there needs to be a promotion slot available. Star Trek seems to keep their personnel from being promoted just because they don't wish for the characters to move on to other vessels. As it'll be hard to justify having that many commanders on one vessel. Although IF the casting is done well, it can infuse energetic story lines into the series. Such as when Seven of Nine replaced Kes.

Nobody wants to be promoted that way, over the body of a dear friend, but the ship, the crew and the service must come first. Every ship needs a skipper

They should have let Riker hold the rank of Captain after Wolf 359 even after returning command to Picard. After all the CO and XO holding the rank of Captain is neither unusual or unprecedented. Kirk and Spock past The Voyage Home both held the rank of Captain. In real life, an Aircraft Carrier has at least three O-6s: the CO, XO, CAG usually the DCAG and probably Chief Engineer

Never understood why Riker went back to ‘commander’. Ok it’d be unusual for a ship to have two captains, but the Enterprise A had THREE captains in STVI. Kirk, Spock ( the first officer) and Scott ( the chief engineer who by then held the rank of ‘captain’).

A US aircraft carrier will commonly have at least three officers of the captain rank in the ship's company (the CO, the XO, and the Reactor Officer). Also on board will be captains assigned to the embarked air forces and possibly to the staff of an admiral on board. Starfleet hierarchy is much too shallow to work in real life.

A counter-example is when Starfleet temporarily reduced Admiral Kirk and Captain Decker to Captain and Commander just so Kirk would be Captain and the only Captain.
