This is what the 80s were all about. Mowing down waves of nameless bad guys, cheesy one-liners, and a wicked steel drum soundtrack. Love it.
@stoogefest16
@stoogefest16 Жыл бұрын
James Horners steel drum accompaniment for the film must be the most idiosyncratic score for an action film yet. It works all the same, but it’s so unusual, even in a period of time when the parameters of the action genre were still being established. Also, if you listen closely it’s clear that Horner was largely rehashing parts of his score from 48 HRS (1982). The only difference is that the steel drums in Commando are more strident and repetitious, but that’s part of the charm. At least it succeeds in its task, which is to evoke tension in the audience.

Anyone complaining about 80's movies' violence can shut the hell up and remember what modern movies are like, eg. Logan and countless others with not only senseless violence but there isn't even any fun in the movie, just darkness and sickening levels of negativity and hopelessness. The hero also isn't really any individual, it's always some covert government/similar organisation...

Same here. This and Predator was my favorite action movie to watch growing up. When I was younger my dad would take a trip to Germany every year around the same date for his grandmother's birthday. Oddly enough every year at that same time when my dad went to Germany either Predator would come on. Sometimes Commando or The Running Man would air too around that time.

@@ryanjacobson2508 must be the youths that are making fun of it. Yeah I know when I grew up into a adult I do see some of the odd over the top and some corniness of some of those old action movies but I don't make fun of it. Like I said it's probably the youths that don't know what real movies are. They just know over the top CGI computer crap special effects in movies and thinks everything below that is trash. It's like I had a cousin who got a HD plasmas flat screen TV when they was new. When he saw a movie on a old box tv he was complaining how "poor" the quality of the images was. I'm just sitting thinking to myself "I don't see the difference besides a price between the TVs". I still have a old box tv from the 90s and it still runs like a champ. Those new fancy flat screen tvs need to be replaced every few years because they keep breaking. First time I bought a flat screen tv I went name brand. Within a couple 2-3 years it already was screwing up.

They did come up with a sequel treatment for Arnold to return as John Matrix in Commando 2. I’d obviously didn’t get made. The premise was going to be that he was hired to be the chief of security for a corporate building in Los Angeles. He was to have been in charge of a group of mercenaries also hired to act as the security force. Eventually after Arnold lost interest the script was reworked and eventually was made. It ended up spawning an action series with many sequels. That movie was Die Hard.
@snorpenbass4196
@snorpenbass4196 Жыл бұрын
...except Die Hard was based on a script older than Commando, which was originally meant to be a sequel to a Frank Sinatra movie (and star Frank Sinatra).
@pedrojsamarripa
@pedrojsamarripa Жыл бұрын
What does the word “based” mean? Does it mean that something is solely compromised of one element or that it consists of different parts that make up a whole, some outweighing another? I’m the case of Commando 2, one of the ideas was what I said. It didn’t work out. So, instead they kept going forward and got a new star with a different plot device for why our hero would end up in the situation he was in. Lots of movies are pieces together this way. Cyborg with JCVD was started out as a sequel to Masters of the Universe. Die Hard With a Vengeance was not intended to be a John McClane movie at all. They just had an unused premise laying around and plugged John McClane into it. Thanks for the “Well actually” comment though.

My only complaints about the 'robbing the suplus store' scenes (yeah, I know it's a movie, but still) are 1)even in the US, what kind of store carries a damn rocket launcher and 2)he'd have been WAY better off taking one gun and as many magazines of ammo as he could carry, not lots of guns with one mag each. That just adds a HUGE amount of weight and bulk. If you need a different type of gun, kill some fool and take theirs, you're going to be obliterating them all anyway.

If anyone asks me for the quintessential 80's action movie recommendation, this is the one I always suggest. There are far better ones (even better Arnie movies) but this sums up 80's action like no other. It's also the most "Arnie" of all the Arnie movies. If you ever get around to watching 48 Hours (which I highly recommend, starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy), listen closely to the music and how similar it is to this! James Horner was a very lazy composer at times.

@@doughbafett They did want to shoehorn in a romantic angle between them, but none of the scenes they shot passed muster, so they dispensed with that subplot altogether and kept their association platonic.

Arnold is clearly in love with himself the entire film and he didn't want to share with Rae Dawn Chong.

This movie is the one that really initiated the 80s macho macheezmo one liner action movies. It is so stupid, silly yet very entertaining.

I think what started the action one liners was the Dirty Harry movies.

@@Jar0fMay0 no, thr 80s one liners are silly and stupid. Dirty Harry was respectable and stern one liners. This was the celebration to kill bad man

It was also indirectly responsible for the rise of Bruce Willis.

Even though Dirty Harry had awesome respectable one liners, I’ll always say that Sean Connery with his James Bond interpretation is the king of one liners, and that’s when I noticed when it started. Then again we also had dudes like James Cagney, Humfrey Bogart and Clark Gable doing one liners in their movies too back in the day, but the 80’s movies is where it did start to get ridiculously overdone, but I personally still loved it with a passion lol 😆.
