Perhaps you are more familiar with Mr Terrill’s achievements. I have to say that just passing the 30-miler at his age is significant; never mind all four.

But at the risk of causing a 💩 storm on here, the Commando Tests aren't really that difficult, a fit robust club athlete could pass them (with the appropriate training on the obstacles etc). 'Test Week' is just a hurdle to get over but I doubt it features in any Recruits 'top 5 hardest weeks at Lympstone'. The hard aspect is doing it after 7 months of relentless thrashings, sleep deprivation, calorie deficit and carrying the inevitable stresses, strains, webbing burns, blisters etc that you pick up along the way.

@@JammyDodger45 That’s an interesting observation. I think you make a good point. It’s not just about completing the tests, it’s the development of mind and body - and a big dollop of self discovery - to get to the point where they take place. Very fit and robust athletes, as you say, may have the physical strength to complete them, as Chris Terrill demonstrated. But of course RM recruits are not becoming athletes; their fitness is only a part of the criteria for passing out. It’s a very long time since I stood there and received my beret at the end of the 30-miler and regrettably, possibly through age, I can’t remember that moment. However, like most, I have never before or since been tested, physically at least, to such an extent. I think Terrill’s achievement is much more than gaining (an honorary) green lid - his skill and bravery in the front line filming in Afghanistan et al shows a high level of commitment to the Corps.

@@Sam-ch9mn - Hello Royal. I've met, but don't 'know' CT but I'm mates with 'Ginge' who said he really is a good guy, his follow on piece from Afghanistan was excellent. A couple of those guys who featured in the Training programme are no longer with us and it was good to see he didn't try and exploit that with a schmaltzy follow on. I did the 30 miler on my Junior Command Course (I don't know if they did that in your day) and it was remarkable how little I remembered of it from training even though it was only a few years before! I did the other Tests a couple more times as a Cpl on Recruit Training and it was clear how the NODs fitness was different to ours in the sense that they were just immune to pain, whatever you threw at them they just got on with it whereas we were (generally) 'fitter' and carrying more muscle after a few years of PT on a Commando Unit. I came out a few years ago (after almost 20yrs) and as much as I miss it every day it really is a young man's game!

I knew Tom, he was my cousins fiance. I only met him a few times but he was always nice to me.. Even though I only met him 2 or 3 times, i feel a close connection to him because he is buried in the same cemetery as my mum. Everytime I go to see her, i go to his grave too and give it a clean and say hello. I will never forget him because I will never forget my mum if that makes sense. Rest in peace mate.

I can't find the words to describe how proud I am of these young men (and all the others serving the Allies). I truly look-up to, and admire these guys, some who are half my age! I have a hot shower every day, have central heating and air conditioning, and get angry when traffic is bad, or power goes off for a couple hours. I served two tours with 42 Commando Royal Marines as an interpreter in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Royal Marines are true professionals and the toughest soldiers in the UK military. after 13 years in the army, my oldest brother has left. in his time in he saw 9/10 of his friends killed. I can't be any more proud of him as his younger sister. he did 8 tours 3 as a captain. my family is one of the lucky ones who there loved one is still with them. I'm just looking forward to being with him and spending time with him as I haven't really been able to since he joined. next week is my 22nd birthday it will be the first time I have had him with me since he started training to join. As a U.S. citizen, I notice a vast distinction between the Royal Marines and our soldiers. Even though the training is similar, I notice a vast distinction especially dealing with locals. While, yes, our soldiers played with kids and gave out candy and whatnot, the overall demeanor of the Royal Marine's is much calmer, much less intimidating, much more professional. Massive respect for both armies, as I was never able to go and fight due to medical issues.

The training period is much longer. This is because the RMs are also commandos. This role was originally for the army during ww2, but as the war progressed so the Marines gradually took that role on. They were formed on the 28th of October 1664 as the Duke of Albanys Maratime regiment of foot. To be deployed in his Majesty's fleet(King Charles 2nd)to counter the threat from Netherlands. Recruit training last for 32 weeks and for potential officers 64 weeks.

I can never find words to say thank you to these extraudinary men. I always find a tear in my, not afraid to say that either. Toms Dad, love how you say that you are so proud of him and for sure that is what Tom would of wanted you to say. RIP big fella and thank you. James mum, again what a lovely and remarkable lady. I was held hostage in Iraq and I owe so much to the British Military for helping to release me and I was a working civilian, I can never repay you....thank you once again.....Gary

Personally I want to join the RAF as a pilot when I'm older because I've wanted to do it since I was 8 and I'm on track with qualifications to get there. So far I also pass the medical requirements like 20/20 vision. Wish me luck:)

Royal Marines their formation started in 1664 during the riegn of Charles the 2nd of England. For well over 3 and half centuries the Marines have fought all over the globe on land and sea Per mare Per Terram. By sea by land . Ww2 saw the role of the Royal Marines change. They were given the role of commandos from the army. Although they retain their identity as sea soldiers being commandos gives them that cutting edge. The Royal Marines training for a recruit last for 32 weeks before they specialise. A Royal Marine officer recruit will take 64 weeks of training before they are allowed to be put in charge of a section.

+Frank Watson If you have sports induced asthma you can work it out with sport do long distance running and also shuttle runs this will introduce cold air to the lungs so it gets used to it like a small form of adaptation and it will stop inflaming so bad or at all, if you work hard and don't stop your physical work it should say away but if you stop for a couple of weeks it can come back a bit or fully. I have no exsperance of this working with normal asthma . / Dont go full out on the first couple of weeks in not fit it wont do you any good/ IM NOT A DOCTER BUT I HAVE HELPED WORK OUT A PROBLEM WITH MY LUNGS A WHILE BACK FROM LUNG BUSTING WORK NOT ASMTHA

I passed out with my original Tp, 600 in 91. I went straight to 40 CDO and deployed to Northern Iraq a few days later. When I joined my section I was asked where I had come from. I said Lympstone. They asked me what job I was doing there, and when I replied “training” “straight out the fucking box” was their reply. The next thing I knew I was in a Black Hawk on a low level tactical insertion, hoofing!!!!
