Magnifique! I love both Thomas Dutronc’s “manouche” music and the wonderful PMJ’s “classic jass” sound, and with this song, they have obviously both been enjoying themselves immensely.

Just what I needed, another way for PMJ to monopolize my free time, now in languages I don't speak.. and yet, I still watch and am charmed.

any way to get a translation of these lyrics?
@MinorCirrus7 жыл бұрын
Here you go: "Like a Gypsy with no guitar Like a castle without the Loire When you aren't here, I'm like that Like a Rasta with no spliff Like a Corsican with no explosives Like a Norman with no armoire Since you're not here I am on the dot coms Meetic pornographic And I feel like an ass I am aphone I have no brain cells I fall off my throne When you're not here, I don't exist Like Sherlock without his magnifying glass Like Tintin without his crest Like a socialite without his (champagne) coupe Like a pizza pie with no olive An advert with no detergent If you aren't here, I'm no longer me Like tree with no roots Like theatre without Racine Like that beach without Aline Since you're not here I am on the dot coms Meetic pornographic And I feel like an ass I've got 18 watches I no longer realise An itch developping When you're not here I don't exist Like a Martian with no saucer Like a hairdresser with no scoop Like a pâté without its crust" Then the lyrics reprise several stanzas from before. A few notes on the meanings of some lines: Dutronc uses several typical phrases, associations or stereotypes to show how his life loses meaning when his love isn't around, hence why some lines may sound rather outlandish to a non-French speaker. - in the Loire valley, in France, there are several outstanding castles, that are called "les Châteaux de la Loire" - there is a stereotype about Corsica that sees the island's inhabitants as dormant terrorist who will bomb anybody from the mainland who tries to settle there (this actually happened several times) - "pétard" is a slang word that can mean many things, including spliffs, guns and small explosives - furniture from Normandy is commonly-known as sturdy and durable. A lot of "classic" French furniture can be boiled down to Norman armoires and the likes - I translated "comme un con" as "like an ass" because "con" is THE most common insulting swear word, and I feel like in English, "ass" is more common than "cunt", which is the actual translation of "con" - Racine was a very hallowed classical French theatre writer - Aline is a French hit song from the seventies by singer Christophe. In that song, Christophe is alone on a beach, screaming the titular Aline's name - hairdresser's are stereotypically assumed to gossip a lot (I think this transcends the French borders, though) - pâté-en-croute is a French delicacy (it's delicious)

Anything to help my fellow PMJ fans appreciate the goodness. FYI, Thomas Dutronc is the son of a very famous French singer, Jacques Dutronc. You may have heard of his song, "Les Cactus", that was recently covered by The Last Shadow Puppets. His mother, on the other hand, is Françoise Hardy, an even bigger French singer from the '60s on.

Wow,, excellent~!~! Thank You , again~!~! Only French singers I am familiar with are Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier, and Charles Aznavour, and of course Marion Cotillard. THIS song just knocks me out,, it is Perfect~!

This song is really cool but I don't understand why he chose to sing one of his own songs ... This is not really the principle of Post Modern Jukebox for me
