"Link howls in human form." You know... I always assumed it was Midna making that sound. Slightly sad you never used the "boss bug"'s name, because it's great: the Twilight Bloat. The giant boars the Bulblins ride around also have a fantastic name: Bullbos. Full credit for "Squeebles" though. Actually got a laugh out of me. The ball & chain quick kills on the Stalfos and Redead Knights are BRUTAL. Love to see it. Stick directions other than up affecting your combos is something I never knew and was shocked to hear. About as shocked as when hearing Zant's Morpheel stage of all things _isn't_ RNG. Very entertaining and informative commentary. Thank you for making this! :)

@bewildebeest Жыл бұрын
From what I've heard, the very first one was found by accident pretty soon after the game released - someone reset while voiding out in the sand in Arbiter's Grounds, and they happened to reset on the right frame to get Back in Time. (I cannot actually verify this story.) Knowing about the flags and stuff came after.

Often by accident, but also some people will load up games in an emulator (or modded console) with a ram viewer to try and force the game to break by doing random shit.

Do the two horizontal bars at the top of the controller input display represent the L and R shoulder buttons? I'm curious how you time the frame-perfect skips like at 32:20. From what I can tell, the only input displayed is the left horizontal bar gradually filling up - is this displaying the L button being held down almost all the way, until the right moment? Or is something else going on? I guess I'm just generally astounded by the precision required for a lot of what goes into a speed-run like this! Amazing commentary either way! I'd definitely love to see more like this from you, if you are so inclined in the future :)
@bewildebeest Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, those do represent the L and R buttons, but what's required for this trick ("Gorge Void") is holding L (no timing) and pressing A on the correct frame. It seems my input display didn't pick up that input here for some reason, which is odd. It sometimes doesn't show inputs that are pressed for a very short time even if they do go through to the game. If you look at the input display on the left side of my PB video, you'll see the A input because I held it down instead of just tapping it (only the beginning of the A press matters): kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYixZHqqqa2Bj7c As for timing frame perfect inputs, it depends on context. For Gorge Void, most people who run this category watch the portal leaving the top of the screen during the cutscene and use a specific part of it hitting the top as a cue. There are a number of other tricks that are frame perfect or have a small frame window that I use a metronome to time (see the bomb boost in Stallord Skip at 1:51:25 in this video), which is very useful when timing a certain number of frames between two inputs. Gorge Void is a variable amount of frames between inputs, so a metronome isn't useful. There are still other tricks that are frame perfect or have a small frame window that I just do based on feel (see the L-slide at 1:51:00 and the wall clip at 1:51:13) because a metronome would just be cumbersome to use for them and they're not too challenging.

Do you think 'no save and quit' is a commentary in your future? Does 100% have a 'no save and quit' as well?
@bewildebeest Жыл бұрын
It's unlikely, as I'm not really interested in that category. We don't have a 100% No Save & Quit category, but it would be less different from normal 100% than Any% No Save & Quit is from normal Any%, and those two are already very similar. For Any%, No Save & Quit means: - no Back in Time at the beginning (which 100% doesn't do anyway) - no Back in Time in Forest Temple (which 100% does do, but doesn't make a huge difference) - getting Zora Armor to enter Lakebed (100% gets Zora Armor anyway, though it does enter Lakebed without Zora Armor first; somewhat trivial reroute) - no bombs, so no bomb strats (100% would get bombs anyway) - a little more backtracking in dungeons - there's no reasonable backup for failing certain tricks (rupee roll in Any%, Coro TD in 100%)
@marlysalt Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation, and I hope I get to see other commentated runs from you. It's more important to do what you're interested in, and I totally respect that. Also, super impressed. I though clawshot actor displacement was tas only, if I didn't know better I'd say it was easy enough from watching you not fight stahllard.

@bewildebeest Жыл бұрын
You can! The main speedrun.com leaderboard doesn't accept emulator submissions, at least for now, but nothing's stopping you from speedrunning on emulator anyway. I did my first few runs on Dolphin. All the tricks and glitches are just as feasible. That said, if you especially want to be on a leaderboard on Dolphin, the category extensions leaderboard does accept emu submissions, and it contains a bunch of categories that I enjoy and that are great for beginners, such as Pirate ArrrTA, JotWaD, Hold a Dog, and New Game+ categories.
