MyG! "I don't know much about EV charging" then continues to completely reverse engineer the whole charging point and explain what everything does! Top lad!

I have had a contactor fail on a Rolec EVCP a year after I replaced a Mode 3 controller and it actually burned out the relay contact in the new controller. I have started fitting a relay in between the Mode 3 and the contactor to give it some protection, as we do the same thing with our PLC's in panel builds

Great video Mike. Loved the VLOG style with just you, the job and a camera. These were the kind of videos you used to make and they are what made me subscriber to your channel in the first place. No I don't think you waffle too much, you are just talkin out load about your though process. Keep up the great work.

Keep waffling! It's excellent, as this vid is gold dust with the shit you've tested/found. Didn't know shit about rivian EVs giving problems, but we do now. Please keep the blue 18th book in the van! ( Just in case) keep doing it bud. 💥💥 Boom

You can test the locking mechanism by setting the tester to state B. That tells the charging station that the car is connected and that it should lock the cable. And only unlock when you are back to state A. Aka you have unplugged on the car side. State D is not really in use with modern li-ion EVs. The fan control is meant for indoor parking and charging lead acid batteries. So the car can tell the charging station to turn on extra ventilation to vent out possible dangerous hydrogen gas from the area. It is not meant for a small fan inside the pedestal.

And you did test with B later in the video. 🙈🤣

Interesting that it looked like control module appears to auto reset for each of the faults and never locks out like the standard RCD did. Would be interesting to see a ramp test on the control module and then the RCD, may shed some light on the operation. Just brought myself some packout, wish I had none you were going to stock, I would have held out and purchased from you.

Can't quite work out how the grey modules with the hole and cables going through, work. Obviously some kind of current transformer. Yet both live and neutral pass through which normally cancel each other out.
@three-phase562
@three-phase562 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the device is detecting the residual or probably better described as the differential current between live and neutral. With no fault, all the current through the live wire will go back through the neutral and there will be no differential current. With an earth fault on the outlet, not all the current flowing through the live wire will travel back through the neutral, some will go to earth. The live and neutral will no longer be balanced and the module detects this.

If the current isn't coming back, it's going somewhere else, which is bad, much easier to detect a small leakage that way.

EV chargers need to be renamed to Charge-Points, it’s just a socket like your domestic socket outlets. The actual charger is on the car, and that’s important as sometimes you can option a higher rated charger when ordering the car (and get a higher rate at home), and I don’t think the public know the difference.

Seems to me that the device has poor design as presumably there shouldn't be any voltage present if the locking pin hasn't been able to decend into the aperture, preventing the plug from being removed under load.
@sjokomelk
@sjokomelk Жыл бұрын
Part of the Mode3 design is that the CP pin on the plug is much shorter than the power pins. So if you unplug with the contactor closed, the CP signal will drop first, making the contactor open before you are able to break contact on the power pins making a possible arch.
