Commercial Fishermen VS Recreational Boaters with Luke McFadden - How to avoid hitting crab pots

KZbinr and Commercial Crab Boat Captain Luke McFadden @fvsoutherngirl sat down with me to talk about how recreational boaters, recreational fishermen, and commercial fishermen can coexist in the same water without cut anchor lines or damaged props and ropes or lines wrapped around a propellers. Commercial crabbing is big in the Chesapeake Bay and our local watermen and commercial fishing vessels are out in the bay setting up crab traps also known locally as crab pots to catch Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs. So if you're fishing in the Chesapeake Bay or just taking a boat out for a cruise in waters where commercial fishing equipment has been deployed, a little education could help us all avoid costly damages to our boats and the fishing gear these watermen rely on.
We discuss ghost pots and one of the big reasons they exist which is directly related to recreational boaters anchoring up in areas where the crab pots (or crab traps) are set. The challenges for casual fishermen, recreational boaters, new boaters, and all other boats is avoiding the hawks, floats, and lines attached to all of the commercial crabbing gear around the Chesapeake Bay. In addition anchoring in the areas where the crab pots are placed can result in cut lines, lost anchors and a myriad of other problems that many people do not consider.

I just purchased a 19’ Atlantic from Annapolis. That area has some large water! We dropped in at Fairwinds marina and went out to the lighthouse. Very cool area

Excellent video. I grew up in SE Connecticut: crab pots, lobster pots, you name it. It's a big ocean; it's not that hard to avoid the pots/markers. Sailboaters, that's another story; I've never had to deal with a deep keel. Love to see the crab boat tour.

Your video is very informative. Thank you for that. There are series of floats like this in my area. They are connnected to underwater fishing nets. I am always wondering what to do. Usually and by default, I change my course to let them away. I don't want my propeller to catch any of the line which are under the surface! Ok for the boat tour, by the way.

when we fish the channels there are certain boats you have to give leeway to always. so you cant just go out in there and get in the way of those boats or you will get ran over. but everyone else has to respect each other. i do commercial trotlines, in western ky. i can do lines in the channel. but i cant get in the way of the barges going up and down the lake.

I under what Luke is saying ( I follow Luke also) I am a recreation crab and fisherman. What I catch is food on my table, Sorry Luke but I usually buy seafood I catch. But anyway, The boater come flying by me, Big boats to jet skis where I can see the whites of their eyes. And here I am sitting in my 14ft. alum boat anchored. can you imagine that. During the week it's not to bad, on weekends is the worse. thats when the cowboys come out.
