Hey, I hope you respond to this. Two years ago I signed with a local agency and I had no experience whatsoever. I went on my first commercial casting and it was baaaad. I learnt from that experience though and I think I’d do better now. I am good looking and have a great smile but the problem is I am not photogenic. That’s quite discouraging for me, as a result I left the modeling world till now. Also, as a black girl my looks change literally all the time since I do different hairstyles every 1-2 months. Actually I’ve always known I’m not very photogenic although I look really good in person. The discouragement came after my agency arranged a photoshoot and when the pictures came back they weren’t a true representation of my looks. I looked totally different. Do you have any tips to help me work around this issue? I’m sorry for the long comment 🤦🏾♀️

Hi Lexi, has anyone told you that you're not photogenic? Often times we are our own worst critic and we get in our own way sometimes. A lot of times I don't like the way most of my pictures look, and even some of my videos. Certain lenses can make your face look longer, wider, or slightly distorted depending on which lens is used. I've made a video on my channel where I gave some tips on how you can look better in photos, check it out here kzbin.info/www/bejne/nanXcn18fZWjja8

I truly thought runway models make wayyy more. I'm applying to be a model. I really needed this. Great advice..!!
@SY-ok2dq2 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid you're in for a rude awakening if you have those kinds of misconceptions about modeling. In fact, many models wind up in the position of having worked quite a lot, yet have pocketed ZERO dollars, and have accumulated large debts to their agencies. How's that? Agencies advance these new models money, paying for airfare fees to travel to various cities and countries for editorial shoots and for runway shows, and pay for photographs, and - a big expense here - model accommodation. In fact, I think many of these model apartments are probably a means for many agencies to actually make some money off models, since they can cram several models into small apartments which the agency rents by the year or whatever, and then they collect fairly high rents from each of those models. So let's say they put 4 models into one small place, and they collect X dollars each, so 4 times X, which would be higher than the rent which the agency pays. Many models who fly here and there to do runway shows barely make enough to recoup their costs (airfare, accommodation, meals etc.). And there are those who are in the red on that, earning less money in total than those costs. But those costs are borne by their agencies, to whom the models become indebted. That's how models rack up debts. Agencies receive whatever pay that models make, and if that model has no debts to the agencies, then the models will receive money in their pocket (minus the agencies' cut, and other fees and taxes). If the models have debts, then the agency doss not give the models any money, as it goes to paying off the debts (e.g. airfare, rent). Once all debt is paid off only then can the model actually start getting pay that they can keep. Runway shows don't actually pay as well as people think (keep in mind that X% goes to the agency, and there are costs like airfare and accommodation to pay) and it all depends upon whether the model is popular and can cram in lots of shows, as well as the prestige and pay level of the shows as to how much they actually clear after costs. Runway shows especially for the top brands are for elevating your name, and getting seen by high fashion people so you can get booked for much more lucrative print ads, campaigns etc. That's why these models do it. Of course, once they've become top models in the high fashion scene, then those models will get paid more by the shows, especially if they've been booked exclusively and are say, opening and closing a show. Then yes, they'll be getting paid very well. But that's a small percentage of models.
@SY-ok2dq2 жыл бұрын
I watched this documentary (made maybe 7 years ago) and this male model Cameron Keesling, who'd been working a year I think, and had done editorial shoots for various well known fashion magazines and was even featured with other models on the cover of I think, Vogue Italia, had still not pocketed a dime from his agencies. On the contrary, he was USD10,000 in debt. Yes that's right, a year of working a lot, and spending his days going to casting after casting all day long. And he owed 10,000 bucks. The agencies paid for airfare here and there, and accommodation in cities like NYC so you can see how that would add up. The video is on KZbin. It's called Unglamorous.

I would really appreciate your help Fresh... Hopefully you'll read this: I got scouted by a small international agency who represents both commercial and high fashion models. I sent them my pictures, got called for a casting (keeping in mind the high fashion board), they told me I had the requirements for it and said they would contact me later. When they did, they were having doubts about putting me in the high fashion board because I lacked experience in walking with high heels and already am 22years old... So I signed a contract for a year as a commercial. Fact is, we did 2photoshoots and I never got to see the pictures. I'm not much the goofy or smiley type so I don't think I fit as a commercial... How can I improve? When the contract is over should I try and apply to other castings from different agencies? What are your thoughts? Awesome content btw!! Love it!

when you do commercial modeling and you get things like a "buy out" contract, can you negotiate to have something else. So for instance, in your example, your friend did a one day shoot and gained $25,000 with a buy out contract...but they can potentially use that for the rest of her life and she only gets a one time payment of $25,000 can she negotiate that? Or is that dumb because it's a good deal... I wouldn't know yet, just starting out.

Get to know photographers, photo retouchers and anyone who works with advertising agencies. Often times they are young creatives who are open to collaborating.
@campbell9534 жыл бұрын
As a young actor, I meet so many people who totally disregard commercial jobs, or don't see them as worth it, but I'd say whether you are an actor or model don't underestimate how helpful commercial jobs can be early in your career. I made more money in one day on a car ad than I did in a three-week job for a series. Unless it's, for instance, a brand you have real issues with, don't be insulted if your agent only auditions you for commercial roles now, because like in my case that money and experience can be made extremely useful later on.

Hi Fresh Peppers! I was asked by a commercial agency for a talent rate, I have no idea what to price myself for. I have a little experience under my belt. I decided on 150 hourly day rate 1200 1.5 for over time. 375 for travel as they are semi local. I saw they seem reputable as I asked around and interviewed with some of the models. However, I am not sure of the idea of having a set rate as some companies pay more or less depending on the job. In terms of usage of images should that be in the contract? Please help!
