This guy is great he reminds me of my cousin. when I worked roofing with my cousin he made sure no detail was missed. He would make you re due it if it was not proper. I kind of miss doing roofing . My cousin taught me lots of copper work and flat roof and metal installations.

Thanks for the videos. I'm about to tackle my first torch down roof. If I can't find Karnak, is there a suitable alternative in a one gallon bucket?

Life pro tip on the shoes.. I take two pieces of cap sheet, and torch them to the bottom of my boots for the day so I don’t mar anything Also for knifes if you don’t like the Milwakee ( I can’t stand folders) Stanley fat max has a knife where you have two blades (one hook one normal)

Thank you for sharing your expertise….very patient and informative…. Let me ask you will Karnak 19 work for applying on metal areas
@FlatRoofDoctor2 жыл бұрын
nope, that is a very low grade of tar. You should look at the price. Price would dictate the quality most of the time

Terrific series! I love your style and very informative clips. Might I suggest doing a video on just background information for those who are just catching up? e.g what is a membrane, cap sheet, filler, etc? Common tools, materials, and so on. Just a suggestion. Thank you again.

Yes, you are right. It is just time consuming. We bought a bigger property and will soon move. Then I will be able to set up a indoor module and make videos on what you suggested. Thanks a lot

My roof is already flat top tar but has many places that need to be redone. Do i need just 1 layer of the peel and stick for my problem areas for it to properly stick down to the roof or do i need to get a base layer of the peel and stick along with a 2nd top layer to put atop of the base
@DaveGrosse14 жыл бұрын
Thanks Doc! Been watching your videos in preparation to install a new roof system on my house. Question about the self-adhering products - would they hold well enough on brick parapet walls in St Louis (temperatures usually get into single digits a few times during winter)? Or should i just torch everything?

So will the metal only warp if you have too many nails in it or will it warp with the flame even if there's no nails in it? So its fine with a bunch of nails as long as you put a little bead of tar over the metal? And whys it take so long to cure? Will watter still stay out?

Can I put torch down modbit over an aluminum sealant that was put over a hot moped roof?

Yes I've done it. It stinks, but it bonds. Just bleed those seams like an inch

Do you have to put peel and stick over the drip edge if you have a low slant roof? I already did a torch down roof on the entire thing but have to put the drip edge on still
@FlatRoofDoctor3 жыл бұрын
Normally you would install the base all to the edge and then put the drip edge over the base. Then the cap sheet over the drip edge. In your case install a drip edge over the cap sheet and the torch a 8" strip over that using Karnak 66 trowel grade to adhere the membrane to the drip edge

Rubber? This torch down looks bullet proof, but the materials Ive found are subpar limiting the life. Does anyone make a high end cap that lasts 30 some years?

I have 3 rental properties all with modified bitumen granule torch down roofs. I've noticed after about 8-10 or so years, a significant quantity of the granules come off leaving the asphalt exposed to UV which results in degradation of the seams. How can this be stopped? The roofer I use said silver coat the seams only initially. Then after about 5 or 6 years when the granules begin to start coming off, silver coat everything. Is this true? Or after a new modified bitumen roof is down, should the entire thing be silver coated?
@FlatRoofDoctor4 жыл бұрын
Just silver coat the entire roof Some Torch Down Brands don't embed the granules properly and therefor the loss of it. Just go and Silver Coat the entire roof to protect the membrane from UV's

I am a roofer please make sure you have proper training before you use this material one wrong mistake could be catastrophic this application should only be only for professionals
@migueldefreitas13672 жыл бұрын
It doesn't stick because you never use elastico stick primer or degranulate your cap sheet underneath like the manufacturer tells you to install it and in the winter you are supposed to use winter grade peel and stick not summer grade. You have know idea what you're talking about. Take the manufacturer course and do it your way they will never give you a installers license.

I don't buy Karnak because they sell only 5 gallons. Pay for 5 gallons and throw away 4 /1/2 gallons. Greedy people. Tell them to make a 1-gallon bucket or I will buy some other brand.
