This is true. Between WWI and WW2, the Navy planned to build the Lexington Class Battle Cruisers, one of which was going to be Constitution, with the old sailing ship being renamed Old Constitution. Never let progress stand in the way of tradition, but what's more traditional than Roman numerals?
@rwboa22Ай бұрын
@@phillyphakename1255 there was such a precedence that may have happened in 1963: Naval aviator and astronaut Alan Shepard wanted NASA to fly a seventh manned Mercury-Atlas mission (MA-10) with him at the controls, and unlike Gordon Cooper's flight, which was 22 orbits, Shepard, who was Cooper's backup, wanted to surpass that duration (minimum of 25 orbits). As Shepard's Mercury capsule on his 15-minute suborbital flight (Mercury-Redstone 3) back in 1961 was known as "Freedom 7", he named his Mercury capsule for the cancelled Mercury-Atlas mission "Freedom 7-II" (yes, Roman numerals were added). That spacecraft, the only unflown Mercury capsule configured for manned spaceflight, is on display at NASM's Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia (where Shepard lived during Project Mercury, as with all of the Mercury Seven astronauts, before NASA moved the manned space program from Langley Research Center to Houston in 1963).

That would still be confusing in a situation where both vessels could be operating in the same theater. The prefix "old" was attached to the sailing ships because they weren't likely to sail in combat. Whereas the armored cruisers were renamed because they were still in active service.

This would certainly alleviate the issue of having two active ships with the same name. Ie. USS New Jersey / (insert fish name) SSN796. Two questions: 1. My understanding is that New Jersey was chosen over the other Iowas for reactivation during Vietnam because she was in the best material condition. Presumably this was also the reason she was the first to be reactivated in the 1980's. Recognizing that it is very unlikely, if the Navy chose to reactivate a battleship now, which one would be first? 2. During World War II, I don't believe the main battery had any part in defending the ship against air attack. What did the main battery crews do when the ship was under air attack? Did they man their usual stations, but just have to sit there?
