Yes that is by far the best answer. Painted at the stern, "BB New Jersey" works fine. There is still the unique ship designation numbers, so there really is no worries of confusion by the Postal Service or GSA / supplies. Lol I can imagine the look on the sub's Officer of the Day when a truck pulls up at the pier with a load of 5" shells ;) Even USS Cod couldn't use 5"/38 shells, their five inch 25 caliber deck gun uses a different shell (and of course modern subs don't have deck guns).

This is true. Between WWI and WW2, the Navy planned to build the Lexington Class Battle Cruisers, one of which was going to be Constitution, with the old sailing ship being renamed Old Constitution. Of the six planned Lexington Class Battle Cruisers, two, Lexington and Saratoga, were converted into Aircraft Carriers, and the rest were scrapped on the slipways.

Seems like it would be very easy to tack a roman numeral 2 on the back of the name and just have the submarine become USS New Jersey II. But as Ryan Szimanski (curator for Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial) has said many times before, never let anything get in the way of tradition.

@rwboa22
@rwboa22 Ай бұрын
@@phillyphakename1255 there was such a precedence that may have happened in 1963: Naval aviator and astronaut Alan Shepard wanted NASA to fly a seventh manned Mercury-Atlas mission (MA-10) with him at the controls, and unlike Gordon Cooper's flight, which was 22 orbits, Shepard, who was Cooper's backup, wanted to surpass that duration (minimum of 25 orbits). As Shepard's Mercury capsule on his 15-minute suborbital flight (Mercury-Redstone 3) back in 1961 was known as "Freedom 7", he named his Mercury capsule for the cancelled Mercury-Atlas mission "Freedom 7-II" (yes, Roman numerals were added). That spacecraft, the only unflown Mercury capsule configured for manned spaceflight, is on display at NASM's Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia (where Shepard lived during Project Mercury, as with all of the Mercury Seven astronauts, before NASA moved the manned space program from Langley Research Center to Houston in 1963).

That would still be confusing in a situation where both vessels could be operating in the same theater. The prefix "old" was attached to the sailing ships because they weren't likely to sail in combat. Whereas the armored cruisers were renamed because they were still in active service.

When they did build the new Constitution they should have referred to the "Old Constitution" as her nickname of just Old Ironsides instead. Would have been more fitting. Also if BB-62 was to be reactivated by the Navy then she should be called the "new New Jersey" as she would have to be renewed completely to be service and war ready. Making her a new Iowa Class battleship.

@@whatever8282828 Ironically, there was a USS New Ironsides which was named in honor of USS Constitution. As Constitution was still in commission at the time, the newer ship was named after Constitution's nickname of Ironsides. Fitting, since New Ironsides was one of the first ironclads in the Navy. That tradition provides another precedent. If the battleship is reactivated, the submarine could be renamed USS Black Dragon.

Rumor has it that Adm Rickover was asked what he thought about submarines not being named after fish. His response was that "fish don't vote". I personally feel that each submarine should possess a fish's name in addition to the city/state/politician name. This would certainly alleviate the issue of having two active ships with the same name. Ie. USS New Jersey / (insert fish name) SSN796. Ryan, you've said before that the Navy doesn't let progress get in the way of tradition, apparently in naming submarines they did. There are plenty of WWII submarines, that, to quote The History Guy, "Deserve to be Remembered"

Two questions: 1. My understanding is that New Jersey was chosen over the other Iowas for reactivation during Vietnam because she was in the best material condition. Presumably this was also the reason she was the first to be reactivated in the 1980's. Recognizing that it is very unlikely, if the Navy chose to reactivate a battleship now, which one would be first? 2. During World War II, I don't believe the main battery had any part in defending the ship against air attack. What did the main battery crews do when the ship was under air attack? Did they man their usual stations, but just have to sit there?

Later on, BB 56 was built and won the Battle of Savo Island by sinking the IJN Kirishima and the IJN Ayanami. This confirms that a ship named after a state can be renamed after a city within that state when a new ship is given that state's name. Hey Ryan, did you all make name plates for the plankowners of the New New Jersey out of the teakwood?

I'm going to bet -if the new Navy still plays it- that there are going to be several versions of Cribbage boards.

Soon a new USS Iowa and USS Barb will begin construction. Pray for all the enemy trains out there, they are going to need it.

Not very likely Battleship New Jersey will be reactivated, I'd support having 2 New Jerseys in the fight.... almost everybody can tell the difference between submarines & battleships. :-)

The helmsman of the submarine standing on the deck teak of the old battleship... that's tradition in its finest! But the name "USS Old New Jersey" doesn't sound good.

It's a shame that the Navy couldn't have delayed Commissioning Week one more week once they determined that the original date of April 6, 2024 would have to be pushed back. That way the submarine's Commissioning events and the BB-62 Veteran's Reunion on-board ship, scheduled for September 18-21, 2024, could mesh.

I think the adjectives in "Old New Jersey" would cancel each other out and the ship would just be called "Jersey"

Since the nuclear sub will never be a museum, the silver is just like a long term loan, and shoud get back when it will end it's service with the navy! And if BB62 is to be reactivated before that ; USS Black Dragon would be crazy cool !!
