Committee of Privileges debate: Pritam Singh on report's findings on Raeesah Khan and WP leaders

The Committee of Privilege’s processes and the report it presented to Parliament in relation to Raeesah Khan “leave many questions, gaps and omissions and by extension suggest political partisanship”, said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh in the House. READ: cna.asia/3BknwPq
He spoke during the debate on the COP report on a lie told by former Workers’ Party MP Raeesah Khan in Parliament, and the role allegedly played by WP leaders in the affair. Mr Singh said his comments would be limited, as he intended to clear his name and cooperate with the public prosecutor.
In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 15), Mr Singh spoke about the “disregard of evidence” that he had submitted to the COP, including “objective documents… which raise serious doubts about the eventual findings”. He noted that the COP had not questioned Ms Khan’s credibility.

Well said Pritam 👏👏. The COP findings were clearly one-sided and biased. To simply say RK was truthful while PS lied is ludicrous considering she was the one who lied in parliament in the 1st place. The armchair critics saying the WP leadership should have acted immediately upon discovering the truth obviously have never dealt with a sexual assault victim before or have zero empathy. Justice will prevail and WP's name cleared.

PM Lee stated earlier this afternoon that 'integrity is the linchpin of democracy' so why, in the first instance, had the COP regarded RK - a proven liar's one-sided comment about 'taking the lie to the grave' as the gospel truth? And how could a good leader bear to press upon his colleague, an alleged rape victim, into divulging her past asap even before telling her parents? The thought processes and execution takes time. Yes, PS had taken too long but if you were in his shoes, would you have pushed her into revealing her traumatic experience sooner? PS has already done what a compassionate leader should have done. Yes, we voted in an opposition to monitor the PAP, now ended up the PAP has to monitor and correct them instead. Team A is distracted by Team B now cause Team B is causing havoc inside. The COP is not a permanent fixture. It's an investigative body within parliament. Only the Leader of Parliament can convene a COP. Members of the committee are decided beforehand. Opposition can cast their objection, but the majority PAP party has the final say The COP has a limited scope (remit). It cannot investigate anything beyond it's remit. A COP is dissolved once it's work is done. In this particular case, the remit is only to find out why RK lied. Why and not if. Because she's already confessed. As investigation of the 3 WP leaders is beyond their remit, the Leader of Parliament needs to call for another COP with a different remit. Indranee decided not to, that's why she's referring it to the PP. In a true democracy, where there is separation of powers, parliamentarians do not tell the judiciary what to investigate and what not to investigate. Parliamentarians are also not allowed to prejudge subjects of an investigation as it would apply undue pressure on the courts and result in a miscarriage of justice. This is what I know with my limited knowledge. If there are better legal minds out the, I stand corrected. These are international norm. But then again, we are uniquely Singapore. Its importance that Singaporeans understand at least the basics of how parliament works. Thanks for the question.

Why didn't Indranee refer RK's case to the PP? Because the case was so thin that it would be laughed out of court. RK said she accompanied a sexual assault victim to lodge a report. The victim came out crying because one police officer commented about her dressing and her drinking. Indranee accused her of smearing the Singapore Police Force. No court will connect the two. That's why Indranee kept the case within parliament where there was no cross examination of both suspect and witness. The COP did not even fulfill its remit of why RK lied. Did the incident really happen and RK lied about accompanying the victim? Or did the whole incident not happen at all? Still cannot see that it's a witchhunt?

Finally, we can bring Pritam Singh and Manup to court - let the impartial judges decide. PS and FM can argue their cases in court and let our impartial courts and judges decide if they lied under oath and tried to cover-up Khan's lie. This is super fair, if you allege that the PAP-filled COP is biased, then surely you will be happy that PS and FM have their day in court. If Pritam and Manup win, their names will be cleared and Khan will be doubly punished for lying under oath. If they lose, they should be rightfully exposed as self-serving dishonourable rats, and Singapore politics will be rid of such dirty politicians. Win-win right? No matter how you spin it, one of the two is lying - Pritam or Khan. And the courts will find out. This is for those Opposition supporters who have at least some morals and conscience (and also those who can take-a-punch kind, if it is a legitimate loss, can man up and take the hit): Democracy is not just about voting, elections and debates. Honesty and country-over-self values are the bedrock of Democracy. Being the opposition is not a blank cheque for opposition MPs to do whatever they like with impunity. The saddest part of this whole saga is that NOT A SINGLE MEMBER of WP who had spoken since the release of the COP recommendations, acknowledges the failures of the party and their responsibility. Would it be any different if the WP is the ruling party?. What would they have done in the same scenario? Pritam had vigorously pinned the blame on RK (basing on her words against the leadership), with the knowledge that there would not be any chance of rebuttal to be offered by RK in Parliament. Pritam spared no effort in the character assassinations of Rk and PAP to save himself. In this speech, he also maligned the COP as partisan with the inclusion of Dennis Tan. He spoke as if he had done nothing wrong and the COP and RK are to blame for the debacle. He spoke like he is invincible and at the same time, spoke ill about past incidents (with no prevailing relevance to the current case) involving the PAP to deflect the issue. His gun was mostly trained on RK and the PAP with his discrediting speech but nothing about admitting to his shortfalls. He said he would fine-tune the WP but first, he should take full responsibility by removing himself because he is no longer fit to lead the WP with his untruthfulness and less than stellar integrity (in his testimony during the COP) and he has inadvertently done a disservice to the country with all his deflection of blame. By all accounts, he seemed narcissistic in his venomous speech, blaming all others except himself. Well, his speech would mostly be sweet music to his (dye) hardcore followers by affording (pretend) a blind eye or the benefit of the doubt to his self proclaimed righteousness.

PS raised a critical point : PAP leadership renewal + transition and related challenges from old guards during LKY days. I am eager to see how LHL execute his leadership transition, something he said he will do yesterday but until now no sign of this happening, only dump excuses " the 4G leaders need more time to choose their leader" - let's see ! We need younger ministers with new energy to replace the old guards who are helming the Home Affairs, Law, National Security, Defense ministries for many years. We need to "Hit Refresh".
