Commodore Amiga Set Up Tutorial | MiSTer FPGA DE10 NANO | Quick, Easy and Beautiful

I finally got around to setting up the Amiga Core for my MiSTer, and boy is it amazing. It's so easy to set up, if you haven't set it up yet, then stop what you're doing and get it up and running right now.

The Commodore Amiga is widely regarded as one of the most groundbreaking and revolutionary computers in the history of computing. Released in 1985, the Amiga was not only ahead of its time but also boasted many features that were not available on other computers at the time.
One of the most significant features of the Amiga was its advanced graphics and audio capabilities. The Amiga was the first computer to offer a multitasking graphical operating system, which allowed users to run several programs simultaneously. It also had a custom chipset that allowed for advanced audio and video processing capabilities, which were far superior to its competitors at the time.
Another significant advantage of the Amiga was its ability to display more than 4096 colors on screen simultaneously. This was achieved by the use of a unique display mode called the HAM (Hold And Modify) mode, which allowed for more detailed and vivid graphics.
The Amiga was also known for its extensive library of games, which were often exclusive to the platform. Many of these games took advantage of the Amiga's advanced graphics and audio capabilities, and some even used the Amiga's multitasking capabilities to create more complex and engaging gameplay.
Overall, the Commodore Amiga was a groundbreaking computer that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, audio, and multitasking capabilities. Its legacy continues to this day, with many enthusiasts still using and developing software for the platform.

Trying again since KZbin deleted my comment... To remove the double entry, you simply need to delete the Amiga.mgl file that was copied over to the "_Computer" folder while following the setup guide. Short explanation: MGL files are essentially shortcuts on the MiSTer - you can open them in a text editor and see what they do. In this case, it's loading the Minimi core and pointing to the "Amiga" config file. Fortunately, the config files you copied over include duplicates for both the shortcut MGL and the default Minimi core. You can launch the core itself and everything will work just the same as if you launch the shortcut. Note: you will only see the double entry if you're using the common name script in Update_all. this script renames the cores in the MiSTer main menu. With this setting turned off, the default core will appear as Minimi, not Amiga.

@@amiga_vision fair. The duplicate will still be there of course, just with a different name. I suppose those of us who care could just rename everything to the default core, as I really have no need for the core outside these builds. Question: if you rename the core in your names.txt, won’t update_all just name it back?

@@Mike-B-Jackson If you absolutely don’t want a separate entry for the Minimig setup, some people make this be the Amiga500.mgl setup (just rename its config files to be Minimig instead of Amiga500, and remove that MGL file). I believe update_all is smart enough to detect that you have modified the file - but if it isn’t, just turn off updates for names.txt in its settings? It’s rare that we get new major cores these days (Saturn and eventually N64 being the next ones), so I have it off, also because I am particular about the naming scheme too. 😊 (I’ll ask the name updater maintainers if we can fix it, since I believe they name every other computer after its company, so it should really be “Commodore Amiga” by default. (Yes, I know Amiga was an independent company, but they got acquired before the computer started selling)

People have a tendency to think that the Amiga core is complicated to set up (and they aren’t wrong in most cases), so we worked hard on making it as easy to set up as a console core - maybe even easier in my biased opinion. 😄

Great to have you here in the comment section, that gives me the opportunity to ask you one short question: Are we able to add own games somehow? I freakin' love the puzzle game "Connect" for the Amiga which is available on itchio but since it's still being sold, you can't just include it in your collection but since I bought it (for myself) I would love to be able to add it, even if not with all those optimisations you were treating all other games with. :)

We recommend installing additional games and apps on the Saves HDF. If you want a larger drive than the default one, there are several blank HDFs in the Extras package that is included.

More amiga content is great. This was one of the main draws for me in getting a MiSTer. I've got a real a1200 but its the base model with no extras. MiSTer makes it possible to have something accurate more powerful and easy to use. Everything else is gravy. MegaAGS is so good. I haven't upgraded to the latest but am getting it now. Gonna wipe the old stuff and start fresh with this - I only had a settlers and dungeon master save but am happy to start again just to make sure everything works. Fantastic job by AmigaVision - the best just got better. Thanks for the vid and to the Creators for building this setup for us all to enjoy.

Did you just copy the files across as per the video? I read on the site that a clean install is best and usually I just don't copy the save hd over when upgrading but this is version is slightly different.

Don’t have a Mister but I wanted to watch this to get an idea of the AmigaVision front end coming to the pocket. I finally got all the games on the pocket but when I boot into a game, no buttons work. Tried a couple different core settings but nothing. That’s okay, I’m guessing the Amigavision will take care of all that when it drops. And yes please on the video of your top 50 Amiga games (if you haven’t done that video already). Cheers!

Great video. Do you need an original Amiga joystick or CD32 joypad or does a standard 8bitdo USB kind of thing work just as well? And do need a keyboard? If so do you recommend anything? Thanks. 😊

The great thing about the MiSTer is that you can pretty much use any controller your heart desires. I think I used an 8bitdobpad when filming.

Do you know which settings I should change if i want to display the AmigaVision in PAL 50hz RGB analogue? I have my mister connected via RGB to a PVM and it does PAL standard resolution. These are the current parameters: video_mode_ntsc=8 ; These two use the recommended setting of 1080p60 and video_mode_pal=9 ; 1080p50, adjust if you want a different resolution vscale_mode=0 vsync_adjust=1 ; You can set this to 2 if your display can handle it custom_aspect_ratio_1=40:27 bootscreen=0

I followed the instructions but, when I load the core, my tv loses signal. I'm connecting via HDMI to a 4k tv. My Mister is dual RAM. I've heard that can be an issue with some cores. Is it not compatible with this one?

I've not had that issue on my screen, but my capture card always loses image when going from front-end to a game. I'd recommend heading to the MiSTer FPGA discord, as that's a good place for getting help, often very quickly. Here's an invite discord.com/invite/misterfpga

This is my first install, say I can't tell you if it's worth it. I understand this is a major update. So a fresh installation is recommended rather than an overwrite. Ultimately the choice is yours. This pack has many of the Amiga games released in the last year too.

@@PixelCherryNinja sure thing! You can also delete the amiga 500.mgl if you don’t plan on ever messing with disc-based games outside the scope of the pre-built HDD image. My interest in the Amiga is, for now, just curiosity and I have no desire to load up floppy disc images :p. The collection on the HDD is already way more than I’d ever need! And if you like all this, there’s a similar setup for MSX on the HTGDB archive

It's a good build but if you have a slightly older monitor that can only display 60hz and not 50hz, you will need to force 60hz otherwise it will always default to 50hz. No probs on the CRT TV. Also there is no Team17 in the 'By Composer' section, it really should be there.

Most Amiga games were 50hz, so I guess that's a good thing. Amiga Vision are on the ball, so I'm sure if you reach out, they'll add Team 17. A funny thing, the different refresh rates, break my capturing software. So I have to keep restarting it. This will make streaming multiple games near impossible, unless I find a solution.
