I used to write for Amiga Action. The Pinball Fantasies score of 95% was one of mine, a score I stand by today. Still can't believe we rated Jaguar XJ220 and The Godfather so highly!

The Pinball Fantasies fully deserved that score. Jaguar was a solid 80%, but The Godfather was a dreadful game with great graphics.

@@pilouuuu I always thought that people got a bit carried away with Jaguar XJ220. I played a demo of it and did enjoy it, a good Lotus type game that looked nice and ran fast and smooth, but I didn't find anything particularly special about it. There were some nice games in that era in a similar vein; the Lotus series and Lamborghini Challenge for instance. I agree with your 'solid 80%' verdict :) (in contrast, I would put Lotus 2/3 up in the high eighties for some particularly nice courses and fantastic music).

I never read Amiga Action but they live up to their name! Lots of adrenaline-pumping games in the top of the list, which is a nice change of pace.

I used to read C64 I think it was. An was Amiga 500 magazines. I think some came with demo disks too. Still got them. 🙂

ST Action and later Amiga Action was pretty much all I read when I was little lol. Still enjoy reading scans I can find online. The demo discs were things of great excitement

Mmm, I've played lots and cannot recall half of the games listed here. Super Cars 2, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, Lemmings 2, Monkey Island 2 and Beneath a Steel Sky were all great. Still think Another World was better than Flashback. Street Fighter 2 and even Mortal Kombat was better than Body Blows. And where is Alien Breed 2? Jaguar number 1?! I played it lots, but it could not touch Lotus. I forgot about Dreamweb! Very nice. Still, I miss so many good games at the top... Great job on making the video though!

Dreamweb is one I always liked the look of, first in magazines and in recent years through KZbin videos. One of the good Amiga games I missed out on back in the day.

Amiga Action was basically a bunch of shills that gave most games 90%, with most reviews being nothing more than a synopsis of the plot or premise behind the game. The legendary Amiga Power was a reaction to that kind of gaming ‘journalism’.

Hmmm... Some of those scores seem very high, that magazine seems to have handed out 90+ scores like candy. Though some games might've deserved it at the time: Rainbow Islands is an excellent port, but 97% and 2nd best game ever seems to be too high. Zool over Aladdin is also comical. Good on them to put Pinball Fanaties up there, best of the trilogy by far. Capital Punishment looks better than it plays - but after so many Street Fighter II-wannabe's on the platform that were stinkers, it's one of the better ones on the patform and the score made sense then and there (Same with Body Blows at 92% - that game didn't age well, but was good at the time). I don't think that there are any truly awful games on the list, but definitely some that are a good 10 or 20 percent higher than I'd rate them. The real surprise to me is that SWOS isn't in the Top 50 - though Kick Off 2 shows that the magazine does know a quality soccer game when they see one. Questionable games rated too highly: Addams Family, Harlequin, Valhalla, Amnios, and the Amiga port of Last Ninja 3, though that one mainly in comparison to the superior C64 version.

Supposedly during that time some magazines accepted freebies for great review scores. It seems like that is what happened here.

@@FreddieFraggs Probably - bribes are still common even now (see the whole Kane & Lynch controversy), it comes with the territory of having most of your advertisers also being the companies making the games you're reviewing. Another possible explanation is that in the later life of the Amiga, many magazines became cheerleaders for the platform. Any game that was even close to Mario, Sonic, Doom, or Street Fighter II was hyped like crazy, and big review scores were given to many games that didn't deserve it in a desperate attempt to prolong the life of the platform and survive against consoles and the PC. That definitely explains why Capital Punishment got such a high score.

I agree the review 'bribing' has been going on for many a year most probably. Sad really as you just can't rely on scores to truly reflect the quality of a game. Guess the best way will always be to play it yourself! Min you I used to buy magazines more to hype myself up for a game anyway. Even if they scored bad I'd still judge for myself more than likely!

You missed a few essential Amiga Games: Defender of the Crown, Oil Imperium, Stockmartket, King of Chicago, POlice Quests, Kings Quests

Never read Amiga action, always bought the one. Can't believe myth made it in there, it's broken, not a patch on the speccy version. apart from that some absolute bangers, need to fire the Amiga up now 🥰

XJ220 being #1 is....wrong. A good game yes but #1....... Otherwise a great list of great games (except #1 which is a great game but not that great game. Did I mention great game?)

WOW. None of the top 10 are groundbreaking in any way, just tinkering with known formats and I would say pretty average games. Number 1 is a joke surely? That ahead of Geoff Crammond's F1GP as a racing game? Seriously?

You might want to do your research before commenting. The CD32 was a Commodore Amiga console and is therefore perfectly at home on this list
