A Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula drake is shown diving for food in the North Basin of Staines Reservoir. These handsome ducks are regular winter visitors to this location. There wasn't much sunshine, so the green sheen on the bird's head is only visible in one of the accompanying still photographs. Notice how the tail feathers are spread out on the water's surface - presumably to lessen the splash as the bird dives underwater.
