Knew Ray's parents and his family. Knew Bill Hafeman, too. When we lived up there, a birch-bark canoe was just $100. Bill said when he asked $25 he sold a few, but when he raised the price to $100, he couldn't make them fast enough.

Birch trees are not rare. Skills to build canoe are rare. These craft cost about 5k to have built.
