Common Houseplants Everyone Should Be Growing !!

Everyone should be growing these plants!! I’ll admit that I skipped over a couple of these at the beginning of my houseplant journey as I deemed them as “too common”, but that’s is one of my biggest regrets as a plant parent. Thanks for watching!

The Rare House plant enthusiasm seems to be all about aesthetics, rather than the joy and love of connection with nature.

Yes, truth! As well as, I think, the thrill of the hunt, bragging rights, and the superiority of knowing you have something highly coveted that others are willing to pay large amounts for. Imo rare plants are a status thing rather than a peaceful, joyous thing.

Summer Rayne completely flipped my view of common houseplants with a thought she shared during an interview. She said to view your plants as "heirloom pieces" that you will keep for life and pass down. Sure, a common plant fresh from the Home Depot might not be interesting, but it will be very interesting (and very large) when it's had decades of growth. Looking at my own houseplant collection as "things I will have the rest of my life" really helps me appreciate the common ones more.

My grandfather snuck a chunk of cactus home in his luggage, probably 30 yrs ago. When it got too big to lift, he built a ramp to roll it outside every summer (he lived in MA.) When he passed, my mom propagated it so each of his children got a piece. Hers had so much growth, I now have a piece and my kids each have one too!

@Marga Esperanza, I would LOVE a philodendron “pink princess” but the greenhouse near me thinks it’s worth $350 (for one small plant in a 5” pot). Yeah, that’s a big no for me so I’ll have to be happy visiting it when I visit the greenhouse. They also have a variegated rope Hoya carnosa for $125 (4” pot). Another nope - I’ll stay with mine that I scored at a local HD for $15. ☺️

Nailed it, Nick! I'm tired of indoor plants that crap out on me just because I breathed on them! I have a staghorn fern that I planted about 14 years ago in a wire basket lined with coco fiber. It did fabulous outdoors in the Texas summer heat. It wintered in my greenhouse. It has grown so huge that it long ago completely engulfed the basket. It broke the tree limb that I used to hang it on outdoors. Now, rather than trying to move it in and out of the greenhouse, we put 3 screws in a greenhouse rafter and it lives in there year 'round. When we had snowmaggedon in Feb 2021, the temps were single digits for 3 days. We lost power, too. Many of the greenhouse plants died - not that staghorn fern! It's alive and well and probably 6 feet across. Oof. 😂

I've found with the Chinese evergreens, they do poorly in medium to high light. Mine kept popping new leafs, but wouldn't open. They'd eventually rot off. When I put them in a low light corner though, suddenly the new emergent leafs started opening. So it cannot be understated how much these plants perform in low light. It's somewhat essential, in my experience.

The golden pothos is one of my favorites because of how quickly it grows. It’s so satisfying. My sad fiddle leaf fig put out it’s first new leaf in 2 months and I was ecstatic. Then I looked at the golden pothos I got a month ago and realized it had pretty much doubled in size 😂. The satisfaction of the what seems to be daily new growth is amazing

I bought Peperomia Clusiifolia Red Margin on sale in a "Save a Plant" section. It hadn't been watered for at least a month, it was just hanging from the pot, looking so so sad. I watered it and after 2 days it turned into one of the most awesome and gorgeous plants I have. It's happy no matter what amout of light it gets, it grows like crazy, and I just love it

Here in Australia, the fern that you have at the end (Platycerium bifurcatum) is called an elkhorn and the name staghorn is reserved for Platycerium superbum, which has quite a different structure (it doesn't clump and the plate fronds have a big leaf-catcher on the top). When I started seeing elkhorns sold in Germany, I found it hilarious that they were in pots. They grow on trees, vertically, and never grow in soil.

This is a great overview. I was kind of surprised that Dracaenas weren’t mentioned, as they rank somewhere in there with ZZ plants and pothos in terms of difficulty to kill. But still a great overview. Still need a Hoya and Scindapsus!

I just found you and I love you so much!! Over the last year I’ve become quickly obsessed with houseplants and have started making macrame plant hangers to help alleviate some surface space and add flair. 😍 my favorites of my collection so far is my Monstera Deliciosa and my Purple Heart Tradescantia. Keep the videos coming! I’ll be going back and watching the ones you’ve posted. Also, thank you so much for the Monstera propagation one. The houseplant group I’m in only talks about water propagating them, so it’s nice to see successful soil propagation!!

That’s funny, a golden pothos is the very first plant that I bought and was able to keep alive. It started my plant addiction and within a 2 month span I acquired 25 plants plus about 40 plants propagating 😅

I'm only at 5 minutes and already love this video. I haven't had live plants in my house for 15 years because of a pica condition of a family member. But now, this is being managed and I am going to bring plants back in. I couldn't care less that these are common plants because i just want plants that i can care for successfully. These low light tolerant plant suggestions are awesome. I love your video style, Thank you Thank you.

Nick for ferns, you really wanna go with a rarer kind! Weirdly enough, the common ones are hardest to look after, lol. Try Osmunda regalis or Maidenhair spleenwort (or any spleenwort really) :) we have a fern nursery here in Ireland, I think they ship worldwide, Shady Plants is the name. Check it out when you can.

The great thing also about most of the plants on this list is that they will tolerate cool rooms in winter also. .I wish they were as easy to find here in rural Ireland as they apparently are where you are. Stag horn fern I have never seen here for sale anywhere even online. and that Agleonema I haven't seen either, Silver queen and maria Christine are more common here.....I would have added Philodendron Brazil and spider plants to that list also as both tolerate very warm and cool rooms and irregular light & watering and look great. thats the great thing about city living and large populations I suppose..There's always more choice.
