I have a Silver Bay I acquired from a dish garden sent to us for my father's funeral. That was 2013. It is now in a 17 inch pot. The foliage is more than 2 feet tall and about 40 inches wide. I should divide it, but I don't want to jinx it! It's a wonderful reminder of my dad.

What a great way to be reminded of your dad. If you do divide it you can pass pieces on to the next generation.

I sure can relate to the sentimental value of your silver bay. I acquired mine as a gift as well from my moms funeral in 2011. Almost lost it but she bounced back after repotting. More beatiful than newer varieties on the market in my opinion.

The hunt for an Aglaonema chocolate has begun...gorgeous plant. I only have two currently and have found them to be extremely easy care. Have them off to the side of an east facing sliding door and they love it. Never had a pest on them - knock on wood - and they have sat right beside other plants that have had a couple pest issues. Definitely an underrated plant.

You're one of the few tubers that seems to have had similar experiences with Aglaonema. Not a diva plant, but not necessarily a beginner plant either. I currently have about 16 varieties going strong in various locations of my home. Not all thrive in lower light and not just the more colorful ones. In my experience Aggies can take direct sunlight including afternoon light. Heck my Calathea Musaica takes unfiltered afternoon light and loves it.

You can get an app from your App Store on your phone, search plant care app. Once it’s loaded open up the app, you don’t have to pay for anything just hit cancel/the little X in the upper right corner and then you can use all the free options the app offers. You’ll see an option to take a picture of the plant and then the app will tell you what kind of plant it is. The app I use is ‘PictureThis’ and it gets it right every single time! After it tells me the name of the plant then I search it on Google to make sure lol it’s a really useful app for us plant people!! 🌱🪴

I’ve never had an aglaonema, but that aglaonema chocolate is just incredible. Seems like a much less stressful substitute for my calathea ornata, which has been a crispy 4-leaved mess ever since I’ve acquired it lol

I'm replacing all my plants that tend to have attitudes with aglaonemas (or other plants as easy and rewarding as Aglaonemas). Less stress, plus I can have more plants, instead of dealing with issues all the time. They remind me a lot of my umbrella plants, never had issues with them either.

Aglaonema is really big here in Indonesia. So many colors and cultivars here its unbelievable. I have around 30 kinds. Five favorites of mine are Khanza, Sultan Brunei, narrow Pictum Tricolor, Andini, and Pride of Sumatera. My wishlists are Pictum Tricolor x Rotundum Aceh and Minion.

My first aglaonema was an aglaonema firecrakcer, I fell in love with it in a plant sale and got it for 5 € (6 or 7 $ ?). I definitely tortured it a bit, I overwatered and then underwatered and I really thought it would die. Now my trick is to check the edge of the leaves, if it curls up in "waves" I know she's in dire need of a good drench. They definitely prefer to be on the dryer side !

A few years Ago, my new red Siam aglaonema got too leggy, a number of its stems accidentally broke off leaving 3-4 inch bare stems sticking up. Sigh. It was absolutely pitiful looking. I managed to root each of the broken off stems in potting soil filled pots that I enclosed in large ziplock bags…sort of little greenhouse environment. It worked. Meanwhile, although I was almost tempted to throw the original pot of ‘stumps’ away, I left them and continued to water about weekly. Well, each of those stumps grew 2 new stems out of their tops and more shoots starting growing out of the ground. I transplanted the now rooted cuttings back into the original pot with the newly sprouted ‘stumps’ and 2 years later I have a large 10 inch pot with a gorgeous full aglaonema. I guess the plant and I both needed adjustment period. So although I wouldn’t call this plant easy at first, it has turned into a survivor gorgeous, not fussy plant. If it ever gets leggy again, I know how to revive it.

I bought an Aglaonema silver Queen a few weeks ago. I noticed lower yellowing leaves so I checked the roots. They were stuffed tight in this plastic baskets.🥺 I had to repot quick. I actually had to cut each plastic piece to get the roots free. I separated the 3 bunches into 2 separate pots. Now the lower leaves on both pots are yellowing. There is new growth on top though. Is it from the stress of the re-pot? Maybe too dry? The soil was damp below but a bit dry on top so I gave the top a sprinkle. I'm afraid to over water. Maybe it's in too bright of a location? Too cold? I just don't want to kill this plant! I have a silver Bay that is doing just fine. I've only had the silver Bay maybe a week or two longer than the silver Queen. I separated the silver Bay into two plants and didnt get yellow leaves. I'll take any professional advice 🙏

I have many Modestums (raise for Master Gardeners plant sale -non profit). They all look like yours. Mine tend to lose lower leaves. My mom raised these -hers were the same. They always look better (for me) when I make cuttings and start a more compact plant from that cutting . My Aglonemas in general root dependably but SLOWLY in water. Any hints for faster propagation?

Aglaonema is a very new plant to me. Mine is a pink dalmatian. It gets a good strip of morning light from an east window. It has very bright color and seems to be doing well. It has had a couple small lower leaves turn yellow, but it is acclimating and I couldn't resist repotting it already. I'm going to be keeping it on the dry side.

If we'd lived on the same continent I would have offered you $80 for a cutting of the A. commutatum. I've been trying to find one for several years but still haven't succeeded. A. modestum is the correct name for the green one.
@smievil Жыл бұрын
mine seem to lose old leaves whenever they gain new leaves, having a stem with 2-3 leaves doesn't look very impressive. and googling yellowing leaves mostly seem to talk about more concerning issues. but is it possible to get them to grow more leaves than they already have? i don't like them much, they're only around a half year old though, seem to quite frequently get new leaves but the old leaves leave at a similar rate.

Oh that Aglaonema 'Chocolate' is my whishlis plant for so long. I am with you nick, I more gravitate towards green Aglaonema with modest variegation. but A. 'Chocolat still has the green hue in it but look like expensive houseplants. I can't find it in Indonesia. There are many Aglaonema varieties/cultivar here but can't find this one. I guess this cultivar comes from US grower. By seeing the look of the foliage of Aglaonema 'Chocolate' it might be a hybrid between Agglaonema rotundum x Aglaonema missolifolium.

Hi Nick! I really like aglaonemas, but have only had a few which didn't make it. I just lost one that had pink in the leaves, no tag. When I repotted it, it was in 2 very small net pots. I'm not sure if that is why I lost it, but once I removed the net pots and replanted it, it slowly declines. I do want to get some more, especially the chocolate Spring Snow and Bai Kaw.
