I have cooked on all types of grills --- including open fires ---- for over 50 years. When they invented the pellet grill, it was a very large step for the BBQ world and mankind's relationship to fire. I disagree with two of your points on pellet grills. If you need more smoke than the pellets deliver, just ad an Amazing Smoke Tube, with any flavor wood you like, chips or pellets. I live in South Dakota, less than 300 miles from Canada, and cook all winter on my grills. Pellets here are measurably less expensive per BTU than lump or brick charcoal, especially lump for us, plus the convenience you talked about . I haven't run the numbers on propane but a guess would be very similar, because a 20 lb refill here is about 16-18$ for about 4.5 gallons --- 411,750 BTU. A 40 lb bag of competition blend pellets at Walmart is about 15$ --- 348,000 BTU. It all depends on how/what you are cooking to how much fuel you use. I invested in a winter cover for my pellet grill and the savings are substantial even in the warmer months (GMG). I agree with all your other points --- especially the maintenance.
