Common Octopus Reacts to Different Colors

It’s a debate we’ve heard many times before. Do octopuses react to different colors? Fisherman have used “yellow” for years to attract octopuses. This is why rooster’s feet are the most common bait among amateur fisherman when they’re trying to attract octopuses. Is this a myth or is there some truth to this?
Cliff, the common octopus in this video is presented with various coloured cloths. Watch his reaction to each colour and let us know your thoughts.
The findings in this video were quite surprising to us. We’ll see if the results in this video will be similar to future colour experiments.
We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Also, if you have any thoughts on future experiments, do get in touch with us. We’d love to put your experiments to the test.

Orange and red got very positive responses, and blue was not bad. I've seen octopus gardens outside their hole entrances, they love to decorate with colorful objects, often red and blue. The neon green is the same color as a lot of diveskin highlights (one of mine included); we all wear it because it is really high visibility in the water but maybe the octropi come to fear it because of divers and snorkelers??? It's interesting, I am not seeing a lot of color manifestation on these octopi, normally white is alarmed and red is angry and black "I'm really big" -- do these have less chromatophore action than other species of octopus?

A few people have commented/asked if octopuses are colorblind. Color is usually associated with the number of kinds of cone cells in the retina. Most animals (like dogs and cats) have two kinds of cone cells, so they can distinguish between some colors on a blue/yellow spectrum. Humans and a few other primate and monkey species have three types, producing full color vision. Colorblindness is a genetic disorder where a human lacks one of these so a colorblind person actually sees what their dog sees. Octopi have just one kind of cone cell so they shouldn't see color at all, yet many experiments like this one have shown them having reactions to different colors. Science may finally have the answer. The octopuses may distinguish different colors through a completely different mechanism than other animals. news.berkeley.edu/2016/07/05/weird-pupils-let-octopuses-see-their-colorful-gardens/ I assume these researchers probably knew about this if they are octopus experts.

There are 2 things I would have liked to see :- 1) The octopus presented with other objects with the same colours in order to observe whether its reactions to colour was consistent or whether it was also influenced by the shape of the cloth & 2) I would have liked to see what the the octopus would have done with the cloths had it been allowed to remain with them..... To me it appeared as if the octopus was really attracted to the orange ,was very intimidated and frightened by the green, interested in the purple, anxious about the yellow , curious about the blue, thrilled about the red ,but hesitant (possibly worried )about the black. This was very interesting. I have repeatedly read that octopus can't see colour , but perhaps they sense it some other way ?

I wonder if size or movement was the issue or perhaps an additional one. It would also be interesting to note if anything occurred between the tests to potentially alter the reaction, perhaps the octopus was disturbed by something in the environment.

What if it has nothing to do with color and more about curiosity of an object in his tank and interaction with the handler. Try this: Do the experiment at the same time everyday but use only one color, work through the colours over time over the course of a week. This allows the octopus to be fresh to each new color and you can rule out hunger, fatigue and the like. Plus try some ultraviolet;et colours woven into fabric. Try lights, a coloured light might be more attractive than fabric, you might just be freaking him out with fabric - you gotta give them more credit than this. They are light years ahead of us in understanding color...maybe they could teach you something? That would be interesting too.
@celestewatson4874

I just learned that birds see a dimension of color we can't, and have no brain processing capacity for. The experiment you describe sounds excellent - because as I watch this video, though I don't know how much time has elapsed here or if they've controlled for fatigue and hunger, the interaction reminds me of when someone plays with a cat without understanding the cat's stalking style, and demands too much of the cat, leaving it disinterested. A more subtle, perceptive handling of same exact toy could yield an entirely different reaction. The octopus seemed glad to engage with handler, rather than interested in the color. It handled the cloth as a means to interact, it seemed to me.

Similarly might bias be introduced due to dyes potentially introducing chemical "smells"? Multiple replicates with cloth from completely removed manufacturers (ex towels and shirts) might be sufficently different to eliminate potential bias. The LED would definitely elimenate bias but part of the attraction is waiving nature of cloth and LEDs do not accurately emit uniformly across the spectrum so it might also bias the experiment. (Human eyes are not tuned to detect the LED difference but other animals are definitely sensitive)

I knew the octopus was an incredibly intelligent animal, but I'm gaining an even greater appreciation by watching these videos. Quite possibly participating in these experiments gives the octopi more stimulation and interaction than they would have in the wild, and since most wild octopi I've seen spend a lot of their time chilling in their homes, I don't necessarily feel that keeping them in lab tanks is inhumane.

The octopus is reacting to the waving rag; not the colors! To do this test, you have to present the colors in a way where its attraction will be clearly seen! Try putting all the colors on the outside of the tank, and see which one he swims towards. Also, any change in the environment will make this test seem like it works, but the octopus could merely be curious. Doing it with something like, say, coral -which would be natural- will make the octopus show you its own personal interest in the colors, without being too different from its natural environment. Octopi make gardens, so see which colors of coral it prefers to decorate its garden with. Also, it might be using that garden for camouflage, so keep that in mind as well. Choosing a test to see whether or not it's the color that attracts it isn't as difficult, once you eliminate or identify the other factors.

On the green, my guess would be the green's fluorescence and it's association as a predatory warning. Three important factors that aren't addressed here would be: 1) the color gamut this particular species is capable of seeing (has that even been determined?) 2) the shape of the object and how it moves - eel do not move like that, nor resemble that shape. 3) the texture - bad choice on the red With these in mind, the red for example, being very different from the rest in texture as well shape and movement, kind of nullifies that result. Truthfully, I don't think the presence of the hand can be ignored either, nor the individual subject's familiarity with the hand. It might be better to attach the sheets to a piece of transparent tubing or something less visible. All in all, just not a very well controlled experiment - too many extraneous factors that cloud the drawing of any definitive conclusions about color alone. As an aside, it would be interesting to see the reaction to various shapes and movements attempting to imitate it's natural predators, such as the eel.

I feel like the octopus in his mind perceives that neon green color as “poisonous”. After all, most animals with bright colors use that as a warning.

In Dutch that colour is called "poison green" and I guess this little guy confirmed it. :) It seems to be more interested in the human than the colours though. Have it watch you put something delicious in a container closed by a number lock. Have it see the numbers, jumble them, hand it the container. :D Or something like that, an easy lock and a tool/key to open it. Show it more complex stuff, see if he learns from watching. etc.

KeiraR It is actually kinda toxic- they used to make that color out of radioactive very long ago, and they didn’t know that radioactive is very dangerous. Artists loved it, and it would light in the dark, so rich people had it by their bedsides, wore it for good luck, painted it on clothes. That green in the video is not as bright as the actual toxic green, but they don’t make it out of radioactive anymore.

@@huskayaken8252 Yes, a group of women hired to paint florescent radium on clocks all got radiation cancer and died. They frequently licked their brushes to get the brush-point to be tight and smooth. So, they ingested radium. Saw that on "Mysteries At the Museum."

What seems interesting, among many others, is that 'Cliff' seems to recognize the hand, ignores it but is fascinated by the cloth. One assumes he's worked with this 'hand' on many occasions so realizes it represents nothing other than another 'resident' of the area he occupies.

Since you guys haven't posted any videos since 2021, here's a couple of ideas: 1. Does this octopus still avoid green at all costs? Is it just that shade of green or other shades, too? 2. How do other octopuses react to the cloths? Do they all dislike the color green? Or do they have different colors they fear or dislike? 3. Do octopuses have a favorite color? You can test this by timing how long each octopus lingers with each cloth. For example, from the time this octopus grabbed onto the orange cloth to when he let go, 45 seconds had passed. Less than 45 seconds had passed with the other cloths he grabbed onto. You could say his favorite color from this video was orange, but it's not a fair or accurate assessment due to the cloths being pulled out before the octopus was done with them. 4. If they have a favorite color, does that apply to different objects of that same color? You could test this by using toys of the same shades of colors as the cloths to see if the octopuses linger with the same-colored objects as their "favorite" in the cloth experiment. 5. It would be better to see at least 3 different octopi reactions to this, and other color, experiments.

Please can all the people who posted here using the incorrect plural please desist? It's not octopi - it's octopuses or better still (though archaic) octopodes. (four syllables like octopodeez) Octopodes is my favourite. I don't care how outdated it is. It's the coolest and most correct plural for octopus. In fact I wish humans were humodes. To quote: "The standard English plural of octopus is octopuses. However, the word octopus comes from Greek, and the Greek plural form is octopodes ( |äk'täp??dez|). Modern usage of octopodes is so infrequent that many people mistakenly create the erroneous plural form octopi, formed according to rules for Latin plurals."

@Stephanie Logan Stephanie, you have my permission. I've never had much call to use the plural of platypus, despite living downunder myself. (New Zealand - not Australia) but now you've got me wondering about platypodes? LOL! :) I personally never learnt Greek or Latin, but my father used to teach both, and he passed a few of his language values on to me.

Questions: 1. Are the effects repeatable after some time? 2. Do other octopuses display the same behavior, or is it just a personality quirk? 3. Will he decorate his place with colors if he were to be given objects with various colors.

Maybe it should be established if Cliff was born in captivity or a specimen from the sea. If it’s the latter, he may have experience of what colours to avoid and what is harmless or possibly food. If it’s the former, it could possibly come from passed down instinct in all of his species. Also, that’s one brave little fish sharing Cliff’s tank!

Fun Fact: They are quite literally colorblind. As in they see the world in black and white. However their weird ass eyes "correct" it and allow them to see color. Yeah I've been really into things having to do with the ocean recently and I dunno why.

Green: fear. Run away a curl up. Orange: LOVES it! Purple: loves it, but has a dark skin flush in his arms when he sees it! Blue, black, red: meh. Yellow: A cross between meh and fear. Maybe it resembles green too much? You say people use yellow to attract octopuses... maybe it's the shape more then, than color. Because this guy got really excited with orange!
