Octopus With a Big Dilemma - Behavior Observation Test

The octopus in this observation aquarium is Arnold. He's a new octopus here at Octolab. He absolutely loves his barrel and spends hours just hanging out and observing the people around him.
We wanted to know what would happen if we removed his barrel, filled it with obstacles, and added another hideout.
Would he just use the new hideout or would he try to make himself comfortable in his trusty old barrel?

I find it amusing that many shows and channels (not this one) call intelligence in animals "dangerous." It's extraordinary and exciting to keep finding complex brain functions in animals, maybe one day we'll even figure out how to communicate with a large portion of intelligent animals in complex ways. Ignorance is dangerous, discovering that our neighbors on Earth are also quite smart shouldn't frighten us, it should make us smile & wonder how we can understand them.

@Anna Sichla actually they can be social animals. They can definitely have companions. Many octopis interact with their owners in aquariums and can even ask for help some cases. They're like dogs and cats just under water and less affected if that makes sense

@@businessmail4929 However it should also be noted that an octopus is not above cannibalism. They don't seem to have the same understanding of a relationship between each other as other animals do. People also have the tendency to anthropomorphise actions animals do, so we have no real way of ever really knowing if an octopus is truly capable of forming bonds, or if we take them recognizing people or other animals and not attacking them as something more than it really is.

@steve hazard Four limbs eh? On an octopus huh? I'm not a biologist, are four considered "arms" and four considered "legs"? Looks like he uses 'em pretty interchangeably to me, but, like I said, I'm no researcher... But that is beside the point. Are you seriously white knighting me over what I said? Do you think I hurt the octopi community with my hateful words? What I said is simple and patently obvious. Little guy can't grab onto things with precise control, it's more like a group muscle contraction, where several suckers get activated then he has to release the ones that grab onto stuff he doesn't want. Looks like a pain in the ass tbh... the experimenters definitely knew what objects to stuff his barrel with... almost like they knew his lack of precise control was going to make sweeping out his barrel nearly impossible, but he still tried... he loved that damn barrel. Do I think I would have better control of my arms, underwater, after millions of years of contiguous evolution? Do I think I would have better problem solving abilities, were I an octopi? No. Why would I?
@wrongfootmcgee

@steve hazard Not an accusation or indictment of Octopi kind, just an observation as a counterpoint to your excessive sentimentality and borderline anthropomorphism. I didn't see any such markings on the glass, either. -.- As it is well known that octopi do _not_ have a written form of their communication medium, I believe you may, in fact, be fabricating evidence to support your position, sir.

Humans: *Fills barrel* Arnold: “So its gonna be like that huh?” *Proceeds to break and hoard filter and tiles*
@think2086
@think2086 4 жыл бұрын
Two observations, one question: 1. It seemed to me that Arnold's eyes displayed annoyance, anger, betrayal, and most surprisingly of all, desire, in a way that was very readable. 2. It seemed to me that Arnold's first thought was, "I need a vacuum cleaner to clear this crap out. That tube thing over there has magic suction properties for whatever reason. I'll use that." He then attempted to drag the tube over there but it broke instead. He hoped maybe he only needed that piece and could figure out a way to activate it somehow. When that didn't work, he thought it might come in handy. At some point he had gone from betrayal and annoyance at the changes to MacGuyver. 3. The video cut off early, but it looked like he was going to experiment with building a door with the panel, or otherwise, maybe using it to shovel out the blocks. Does that resemble what happened after the video cuts off? Thanks!

@@jennyfromdablock1735 the higher mammals have emotions, and on a basic level so do many other animals. But, their experience and perceptions of the world is different from ours, so you cannot read or apply human emotion and logic into the animal behavior and assume it is the same as yours. That is not to say again, they are not experiencing these emotions, but, it has a completely different meaning and context for them. This is something we will have to take into consideration if we were to ever meet an intelligent species from another planet. We will not be able to assume that intelligent alien species is feeling, perceiving, and thinking the same as us. There are quite a few episodes of Star Trek that deals with this subject. To answer your question "how do you know' we know because scientists and psychologists have been studying animal behavior and contrasting it with human behavior for decades.

It seems he found the "obstacles" to his liking. It looked like he used them as an opportunity to construct a more natural octopus hide out. Most of the times I have seen them in the wild their lair has rubble piled up outside, is more defensible than his open barrel and the opening is usually flattened out horizontally like he ended up making his barrel by the end of this segment. This was interesting.
