I just moved to Oahu and met these guys who were spear fishing at night. They invited me to eat with them and told me and tried to teach me about the language they were speaking which was Chuukese. I meet up with them once in a while and am trying to learn more.

Awesome Job. I'm Chuukese Mortlockese,most of my Cousins who were born and raised Abroad don't know nor speak Chuukese. Sometimes when they try to talk to Me in Chuukese they either sounds like a truck stucked in a mud or sound like an old hammer struggling to drive a brand new nail into an hardwood.🤣

This is impressive! I can have my kids(ages 14yo, 12yo, and 8yo) refer to your videos for Chuukese Lessons. Btw, I am Chuukese married to a Caucasian. I have not been successful with teaching them Chuukese. Unfortunately, my relatives commented with their pronunciations which discouraged my older two from attempting. You are doing an fantastic job! Your videos got them interested.

Mercedes Miller Hi Mercedes! This is wonderful news. I appreciate your feedback so much! I have a book that I put together for my daughters. I’ll share it in a video. Also, I understand where your kids are coming from 100%, I was raised with a Caucasian mother and Chuukese father and always felt a little embarrassed trying to speak with my Chuukese family and not understanding and not being able to speak. Won’t give up though. It’s really important to me and I’d encourage your kids not to give up either 👍

Trent Family I’m happy you’re watching and learning with me👍 I’m so slow at learning this language but I’m very excited to one day understand and participate in conversations in Chuukese😁 Your comment about the phrase you remember cracked me up because my mom ( who lived on Chuuk as a young girl but who is a native English speaker) heard “kiss a bonny for me” I’ll share your memory with her and I bet she’ll get a kick out of it too😜

The “mwochen” is pronounced “mwotsen” Instead of “kose” u can use “kete” its more accurate. “Sorry” is spelled “OMWUSALO” but pronounced with a short “R” instead of the “L” “Mete na ke for”(what are u doing) can vary depending on which island in chuuk your from so basically the accent of the island u are from. From the Faichuuk region is what u are using. From my accent its slightly different “metena ke för/föri. Same goes with “met na” some accents use “metena”(what is that) “Kunok fite iei”(what time is it now) “Kunok fite”(what time or whats the time) “Ifai” is actually two words. “Ifa”(where) & “i” (she or he) = where is she/he. “Ifa usumw”(how are u) “Pwaat”(why) can also vary from island to island or region.

How do you say " be mine " in chuukese?
@SantusAnton4 жыл бұрын
How are you? - Ifa Ussumw? We, today's Chuukese, tend to forget the rules of our language, spelling, etc. We, somehow, spell a word differently from the way we say it but, as a matter of fact, we spell a word the way we pronounce it. For instance, USSUMW- this is how we say this word. To be more clear "us'sumw". When we put it in syllabic grouping then this is how it should be and how it should be said. Thanks this is just to make this word and its spelling correct and hope it helps. Chuukese Me Please you're doing a very good job.👍

I see you have improved quite a bit since the last time I messaged you! Are you no longer doing videos to teach Chuukese? Sadly, there is STILL no videos available on KZbin (or any other platform) that goes over Chuukese pronunciation in-depth. You hinted at it a bit when you mentioned the spelling variations on "Kirisou" / "Kinisou", but there is so much more to be explained. If you consider yourself comfortable in the language now, I really wish you could go over the pronunciation completely in a series of videos. Something to consider. Kirisou chappur!

You using L instead of N for Kilisou or Kinosou reveals your dialect in the language actually. When using L, you're from one of the regions of Mortlocks where my whole mother clan is from. When using L, you're using the dialect of the region where Chuuk or Weno is from.

That's a big mistake the word thank you in chuukese language?! Does not have multiple spelling the correct way is with the N... The way you used the L in kinisou ruins the grammar.
@chuukesemeplease18234 жыл бұрын
Jero Antonio Hi, thank you for your feedback!:) Do you have a reference you can recommend? The N and L appear to be interchangeable depending on where you’re from. For example, my father’s name is Kilisou, spelled with an L, and he’s from the Faichuk Region. The other reference I’ve seen the letters interchanged in is the Trukese-English Dictionary by Ward H. Goodenough and Hiroshi Sugita published 1980. I appreciate you sharing your reference and feedback because that’s the intent of this channel. We are here to learn and practice the beautiful language of my family. Kilisou chapur/kinisou chapur my friend 👍
@bjherry47684 жыл бұрын
It doesn't ruin the grammar. Chuukese language has three dialects. Chuuk lagoon dialect, Mortlock dialect, and the Northwest dialect. People from the Chuuk lagoon say "Kinisou". People from the outer islands in chuuk say "Kilisou".
