You mentioned closets being good recording spaces. As proof of concept, when the Critical Role folks were doing The Legend of Vox Machina, Covid hit. Obviously they couldn't continue to go into the studio to record. During the behind the scenes footage, they showed Ashley Johnson literally recording her dialogue, for their professional "we're a bunch of voice actors making our own animated series" recording, in her closet surrounded by clothes. I think Travis and Laura had to do the same thing. The room treatment will make up for a lot of the flaws of lower-end microphones. I learned that through trial and error. Some of my treatment is STILL made up of moving blankets tacked to the wall. It looks kinda gnarly, but it sounds like an honest-to-god studio.

Once again, and on a personal note, thank you to SkillsHub and Ms. Hale for validating some of the things I've had to teach myself. While I'm not having much success booking anything professionally, it is enormously helpful to know that I'm doing at least a few things correctly. The amateur stuff I use as practice sounds GREAT; a DIY studio can be very effective with some creativity and elbow grease. For instance, I made a 3-foot by 4-foot drop ceiling panel out of cardboard with octagonal sound-proofing panels glued to it that hangs from the plaster ceiling by fishing line and eye-hooks. It helps with echoes from the ceiling AND helps shrink the space, and I think the whole thing cost me under $50.
